Good afternoon,

This thread:https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/conflict-in-the-middle-east/4931824-placards-from-antisemitic-marches-in-london?reply=130705682&utm_source=brevo&utm_campaign=Mumsnet_Watched_Thread_Notification_New_Talk&utm_medium=email

This topic needs to be kept open especially as now grafitti has been found close to the route taken by Pro Palestinian marchers:

This is absolutely abhorrently anti-semitic.

Police 'actively looking' for individuals over antisemitic signs at pro-Palestinian march

While a march in the capital calling for a ceasefire in Gaza remained largely peaceful, images are circulating on social media showing some protesters having carried antisemitic signs. Sky News has also seen antisemitic graffiti close to the route.

There are many threads whose titles I don't agree with....

Desertrose2023 · 09/12/2023 15:34

@Jupitersstorm please change the title of this thread. As another poster has mentioned it is incorrect and inappropriate to call these ‘antisemitic marches’. It’s disrespectful to the hundreds of thousands who attend them each week and who ARE marching for a humanitarian ceasefire and for Palestinian rights.
it you want a thread to discuss placards considered to be anti-Semitic at these events and to discuss anti social behaviors then that’s fine, but it’s totally unfair to slander all the protesters attending them in such a way.

Chants of "globalise the Intifada" in central London is very fucking far from being OK. There is literally nothing 'pro peace' about a call for terrorism, that for some simply means violence against worldwide Jewry.

We need a ceasefire now and this war needs to end.

Yes. I’d love to know what the US and the UK are playing at. Vetoing a ceasefire 🙄

Edited

I don't know about the Americans but Barbara Woodward explained why she abstained

Pro -Palestine rather than pro peace?

I wonder how many marchers will call for Hamas to surrender and release the rest of the hostages.

Here's some Nazi slogans being chanted at the pro Israel protest yesterday.

The men being shouted at were Neteuri Karta, they’re only there to cause trouble and division. I don’t personally think anyone should be shouting it at anyone else, but here’s some context for “Judenraete”, although as it’s more words and more complex than a social media soundbite, you may struggle to get through it.

Jewish Councils (Judenraete)

The Germans established Jewish councils (Judenraete) in the ghettos. Forced to implement Nazi policy, council leaders and members faced impossible moral dilemmas.

How do you know not one of them challenged them for carrying an antisemitic placard?

A Jewish poster on another thread said they did challenge someone on a placard that was inappropriate last weekend and the protestor in questioned apologised and put it down. I'm Jewish myself and I'd like people to always intervene like that but I can't expect it of everyone, it can take quite a lot of social skill and confidence to do that and not everyone has it.

Regarding the protestor who was on the war memorial, my understanding is that he was asked to get down from it and he did. It's a bit disrespectful but I don't think it is something anyone should be arrested for personally.

I hope they do arrest people with hateful placards or who shouted violent slogans, or anything that supports Hamas. But we can't expect protest organisers to vet every attendee or their placards realistically, and we can't let the possibility of it happening shut down legitimate protest against Israel's actions.

Disrespectful yes, horrific possibly not.

Fair enough.

But , I can imagine, intimidating for other people out and about - like this image in particular.

Well, of course they HAVE been climbing memorials.

Uncivilised, disrespectful behaviour. Horrific scenes in our supposedly civilised country.

It should be illegal. And I bet it soon will be - brought forward by these dreadfully behaved people.

Climbing a war memorial is 'unfortunate' but not illegal, Met chief says after pro-Palestinian protesters were not arrested

Sir Mark Rowley, the Met Police Commissioner, said footage showing demonstrators climbing on the Royal Artillery Memorial in Hyde Park Corner was "unfortunate" and "inflammatory in certain ways".

There are literally thousands of people on each march who should have been detained for anti-semitic chants and placards.

The arrests would have been in their thousands last week had the police not been told to be light touch.

The arrests weren’t in the thousands then but would have been if the police had been told (by who? Not Suella presumably) to not do their jobs. And you know this for a fact because of reasons.

I only skim read the article tbf but it seemed to be saying the police have been ordered to stop people claiming on war memorials if for some reason they try to. Not that they actually have been climbing onto war memorials. Well that’s good to know.

Jupitersstorm · 18/11/2023 12:11

Glad to see that the police are going to do the right thing and arrest those people committing and inciting public disorder. I mean it's obvious to all that there isn't just one anti-semitic person half a mile away is it? There are literally thousands of people on each march who should have been detained for anti-semitic chants and placards.

The arrests would have been in their thousands last week had the police not been told to be light touch.

Well done Commander Findlay for doing the right thing now.

Not sure what the obsession with minimising the hate crimes surrounding the marches from some users

Well there were 300,000 people at the march in London last week and to say its purpose was to be antisemitic because of hate crimes committed by a minority of its wrong. I don’t think it’s minimising the crimes to say that really.

Just find it odd that in a crowd of 300,000 you’re personally responsible for some numpty waving an antisemitic placard half a mile away. People on here be like “Why did you allow that? Happy to march side by side with racists eh?”

Sugaristheenemy · 18/11/2023 07:13

How do you know not one of them challenged them for carrying an antisemitic placard?

Yeah and were they supposed to do? Make a citizens arrest? If it had been me I wouldn’t have challenged them directly as squaring up to thugs is never a good idea. I probably would have taken a pic and then reported them to the police.

How do you know not one of them challenged them for carrying an antisemitic placard?

Maybe 1 or 2 have. However I have seen literally 1 person on Twitter video challenging someone. I have seen nobody on here who was on a march saying that they challenged anyone and of course numerous videos of people walking alongside those with anti-Semitic signs but not challenging them at all
That would rather strongly suggest they are not being challenged.

I'd be delighted If you could tell me you'd seen numerous people on marches challenging it.

Unfortunately I have seen more videos of people with signs denouncing Hamas being verbally and physically attacked for doing so.

The spread of hate is affecting schools and this will continue as long as adults try to divide communities. Most young children do not watch the news but are influenced by families, communities and if old enough social media. If adults keep pumping out certain narratives the situation in schools will get worse
