Oooh ponies! I love ponies! I used to think I could keep one in the shed until very recently when I was very small. I haven't ridden for years but I do still get excited about horses. Hey, maybe a Black Beauty /teen horse-based fiction thread next?

Euro - a wordsmith, eh? I also indulge in wordmongery.. You intrigue me.

Talking of animals, this thread is making me cry.

TWinklyLittleStar · 15/02/2013 17:39

My grandad owned horses. I would like one, there are a lot of livery stables very near me as well, but shifts make everything difficult.

maamalady · 15/02/2013 17:37

And stupid, rie. They're mostly stupid.

ArielThePiraticalMermaid · 15/02/2013 17:33

Horses are big

FrankellyMyDearIDontGiveADamn · 15/02/2013 17:33

Nope, I've never owned a horse Sad In fact I haven't ridden for 3 years.

Yes, except I'm cooking with okra for the first time (I don't care for it but AMNH does) and have just read a ton of recipes saying I shouldn't have added it till the end or it will go slimy. Grrr.

EuroShagmore · 15/02/2013 17:04

That's great, Norf. (Particularly the bit about the Indian extravaganza!)

Horsies scare me a bit. I have ridden on holidays and things but not for years.

maamalady · 15/02/2013 17:01

This is making me reminisce about my loan-pony I had as a teenager. He was 14.2hh, palomino and gorgeous, and the most fun to ride. He died about six years ago, I hadn't seen him for a good three years but I still miss him every now and then. He really knew how pretty he was, the perfect teenager's posing pony...

Northey · 15/02/2013 16:51

Have you got a horse at the moment, frank?

FrankellyMyDearIDontGiveADamn · 15/02/2013 16:49

Glad you are feeling ok Norf.

Agree with Euro, size of horse is totally dependent on type. I'm 5ft 6" and would usually go for anything between 15.2 and 16.2, though I have ridden bigger (from a 17.2 part Thoroughbred) and much smaller (a 9hh Welsh when I was at college, though I was about 2 stone lighter at the time!).

My sort-of SIL (BILs girlfriend) is 6ft and her horse is 15hh. She's had him since she was 14 and wouldn't part with him for the world Grin

Completely fine, euro. I Have spent most of it either lying in bed or preparing an Indian extravaganza for tonight (20 side dishes sort of thing). Quite fancy a riding lesson, really, now I have been looking at photos of horses. But I don't have my kit here, and AMNH would have a fit anyway.

maamalady · 15/02/2013 16:35

It depends entirely on the horse and how much you mind your feet being near the floor, norf! For instance, Icelandic horses are small (around 13.2-14.2hh), but very strong, and ridden by all sizes of people including tall and heavy men.

I am not quite 5'3" and prefer a horse around the 15-15.2hh sort of size, but am quite happy on anything between 13hh and 17hh, so long as the horse behaves itself and is strong enough to carry me. I look like a pea on a drum on anything bigger than 16hh, though! You'd probably be most comfortable on something around 16.2hh, but that doesn't mean you couldn't ride a smaller horse perfectly happily.

EuroShagmore · 15/02/2013 16:29

How are you feeling today, norf? Sore or ok?

Northey · 15/02/2013 16:17

If I am 5'11", how big a horse do I need?

aries, hurrah for mrA! What a nice, clever boy he is :) Is it winter only, every winter? That's kind of the jackpot for you, isn't it?

FrankellyMyDearIDontGiveADamn · 15/02/2013 15:12

Ooh, that second one is very nice. Grin

maamalady · 15/02/2013 14:14

I like this one too.

And this one.

And this one...

maamalady · 15/02/2013 14:06

Ah, 15.2? He is nice, then Grin

FrankellyMyDearIDontGiveADamn · 15/02/2013 14:05

He's 15.22hh. The clip is a "hunter clip", it is used for horses who do a lot of work to keep them from getting too sweaty and catching a chill. The hair is left on the legs to protect them when jumping hedges etc out hunting.

ArielThePiraticalMermaid · 15/02/2013 13:58

The horse? Um....looks...um good and stuff? I like the "has no vices" bit in particular.

That's a hell of a haircut they've given him.

maamalady · 15/02/2013 13:56

Excellent news, norf!

Still thinking of you, Bugs

Nice horse, Frank! Looks a bit big for me, mind, though it doesn't state his height...

ArielThePiraticalMermaid · 15/02/2013 13:55

I guess there's still the possibility that you've "just" had fucking awful, shitty luck? I don't know....nothing about this game is fair is it?

Yes the job is very much in his area of expertise, and just what he wanted really. A regular winter job every year to pay the bills while I take care of everything else. It's good.

Northey · 15/02/2013 11:56

Darling buggeration.
