Would Neelam be a nice name for an Indophile’s daughter (Indophile- India lover) with no Indian connection?

Yeah why not? I grew up with a girl with the srilankan name Jayanthy and she was as English as they come no sriracha lankan heritage at all

NamingNoNames · 24/03/2026 17:25

Yes but Noor has been used for decades as a unisex name, and the Arab population is larger.

@LiquoriceAllsorts2 , It's a short form of Eleanora. It is far more popular as a unisex Arabic name.

It was the most popular name given to baby girls in Netherlands in 2025

I’ve just namechanged to say this is my name! It’s really mixed name in Indian/Pakistani culture in that I’m a Sikh Neelam (v unusual) but I had two friends at a school a Muslim Neelam and a Hindu Neelam! It’s also the name Ed Sheeran had totooed on his leg for his song sapphire. I’ve had a lifetime of Nee-LAMB when it’s Nee- lum but not so ‘um’ more ‘ahm’ so clearly I love it but it’s deffo kind of a 1980s name and I’ve always loved being Neelam.

Are you sure it’s not Neev which is an Indian name?

Nope: she’s definitely a Niamh.

MaybeIamJustABitch · 23/03/2026 15:20

I know a Nilam (but not a Neelam).

Must your name reflect your heritage? I’m not aware of this rule!
I know a child with Indian heritage called Niamh…no one has questioned this. I see no problem with using the name Neelam for a child of any heritage, it a pretty name.

Nobody is saying your name must reflect your heritage.
Niamh is mainstream. Neelam isn't, so is likely to have people saying 'Where's it from?' then something like 'Are you Indian?', and she'd probably get it happening a lot and it becomes tedious.

She might get people assuming she was mixed-race or Indian, or a Hindu.

Anyone who objects to a name under the grounds of "cultural appropriation" should be ignored like the strange, unthinking person they are.

NamingNoNames · 23/03/2026 12:55

@Sskka , I'd be surprised at it being used by a non-Muslim couple.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 23/03/2026 12:52

@pinkdelight Thank you. That was my reasoning.
Haven't heard of India Knight or whatever situation has occured.

Zennia · 23/03/2026 12:49

I would assume Indian heritage with Neelam.

What about Neela? It sounds similar but it's more multicultural so it would possibly lead to fewer comments/questions about heritage.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 23/03/2026 11:33

Sskka · 23/03/2026 06:25

I do wonder about the name Mohammed, whenever the ‘most popular baby names’ list comes out and it’s cumulatively at the top – is every single recipient muslim, or are there some non-muslims who just like the name and go for it?

That would feel particularly weird given the significance, but then it’s also a surname and I don’t think all holders of that can be muslim.

From what I understand, a lot of boys are called Mohammed but go by their middle name. If every Muslim boy is called Mohammed (they won’t all be obviously), that would far outnumber the boys named Oliver, Jack and Theo.

I know a Neelam.
She is great.
I've always liked her name.
Thank you for explaining what it means. It's a lovely meaning.

India conjures up India Knight for me, who is in disgrace.

Agree.

NamingNoNames · 23/03/2026 09:53

@Sskka , Sting and Trudie have daughters called Mickey and Eliot. Sting has a net worth of about $550 m. That probably makes a big difference.

CharlotteRumpling · 23/03/2026 09:45

CoffeeBeansGalore · 23/03/2026 07:44

Would you consider calling her India?
Easy to spell & pronounce. No lifetime of explanations for her.

CamillaMcCauley · 23/03/2026 09:42

No because they’ve been used in English culture for centuries. I’d think it was wanky to call your son Jacques instead of Jack or Henri (pronounced On-ree) instead of Henry if you’ve got no French heritage though.

Edited

Sting avoided that by calling his son Giacomo.

CamillaMcCauley · 23/03/2026 09:42

vespersjack · 23/03/2026 09:37

Would you think the same of a name like Louis or Francesca?

NamingNoNames · 23/03/2026 09:39

@pinkdelight , yes but it's like OP saying she LOVES the name Lasairfhíona, and you saying 'You could call her Erin'.

@vespersjack , Louis and Francesca are mainstream, Neelam isn't.

vespersjack · 23/03/2026 09:37

CamillaMcCauley · 22/03/2026 16:44

Personally I think it’s not right to use a name from a culture that you have no ancestral connection to. My ex really liked the name Noor but we have zero Arabic heritage so I thought it would seem like cultural appropriation (and give our child a lifetime of explaining to do).

Would you think the same of a name like Louis or Francesca?

pinkdelight · 23/03/2026 09:32

NamingNoNames · 23/03/2026 09:29

@CoffeeBeansGalore , OP loves the name Neelam so why would she call her baby India?

Because she's an Indophile. It's not the maddest suggestion.
