I know it’s a boys name in Welsh but for a girl? Or perhaps spelt like Arwen LOTR?

It has such a pretty sound.

I'd totally assume Tolkien fan

@Seeleyboo , Arianwen is the usual spelling.

@SeethroughDress , the Welsh name sites are really bad. There are articles on here

It looks like the author has looked at some dodgy sites and cobbled something together using cut & paste.

Riley is an Irish girl's name
Riley is a surname and might be from O'Reilly (an anglicised version of the Irish surname ‘O’ Reilly’, itself an anglicisation of O’Raghallaigh) or from the English Rye+Lea.
To say that Riley is an unisex name from a surname or place name meaning rye clearing is ok.
To say that Riley is an irish girl's name meaning rye clearing is not ok.

And

Awful.

KirstenBlest · 11/11/2023 18:49

Anwyn and Bronwyn aren't male names, they're bad spellings of Anwen and Bronwen.

I know a welsh Arwen, but her name was used as a feminine form of Arwyn, and pronounced accordingly (ARR-wenn)

CaffiSaliMali · 11/11/2023 16:33

As others have said, Welsh names ending 'wyn' are masculine and names ending 'wen' are feminine.

Not all wyn or wen names have an opposite equivalent. E.g. Olwen is a Welsh girls name. There isn't a masculine name Olwyn - olwyn is simply the Welsh word for wheel.

I would go for Arwen. It's a LOTR name created by Tolkien but it's also a nice name and lots of people don't realise it isn't Welsh.

Anwen and Alwen are similar names which are Welsh.

WoolyMammoth55 · 11/11/2023 13:25

We have a 7 yo Arwen friend, lovely name, copied from LOTR. I agree with 'wen' over 'wyn' ending, as wyn is the masculine version.

Awen is pronounced the same ("Ah - wen") and is from the Celtic tradition: the witch goddess Ceridwen brewed a potion for a year in her cauldron, the potion was of Truth and Wisdon, Awen:

So that could be a good and legit alternative if you don't want to go too Liv Tyler!!

PhantomErik · 11/11/2023 13:14

Only Arwen I know is a 15 year old girl. I like the name.

Wyewaving · 11/11/2023 13:01

Arwyn is a very masculine name to me, I work with one and he’s a strapping 6’4” bloke.

As others have said, anything ending ‘wyn’ is masculine. I’d go Anwen personally.

heetud · 11/11/2023 12:54

@PurBal I know a welsh 'Sharn' her parents spelt it that way as they preferred it, her being from wales doesn't suddenly make that name welsh!

If you’re anywhere near Wales I’d go or Anwen or Olwen which are equally nice IMO and are actually Welsh girls names.

If you aren’t, then crack on - LOTR has made it accepted as a name - I think I would go with Arwen because wyn is masculine and wen feminine.

It’s very pretty

SeethroughDress · 11/11/2023 11:28

Slightly relived that there are dreadful baby name sites that muck up Welsh names too —Irish names get mangled on them, given completely incorrect etymologies/spellings etc. or they just present random words or placenames as ‘Irish names’.

I mean, ‘Riley’ (an anglicised version of the Irish surname ‘O’ Reilly’, itself an anglicisation of O’Raghallaigh) has been used as a boy’s name in the US for years, and then started being used for girls, too, and spread to the UK and Ireland. But that does not make Riley a ‘traditional Irish girls’ name’ that somehow means both ‘rye clearing’ and ‘courageous’.

Seeleyboo · 11/11/2023 11:15

I have an Ariannwenn.

KirstenBlest · 11/11/2023 11:12

This is an example of a duff baby name site:

It's a boy's name. It doesn't mean muse.
Arwyn isn't an alternate spelling of Arwen, and Arwen isn't Welsh.

Arwyn?
KirstenBlest · 11/11/2023 11:04

@kaceylena , @dreamygirl25 , The -wyn suffix is masculine. Bronwen is the correct spelling.

@PurBal , I think you might have been looking at a duff baby name site. Anwyn is not a name and it's unfortunate. Alwin, usually spelt Alwyn, is not of Welsh origin and is a boy's name.
Anwen and Alwen are both Welsh names for girls.

Arwen is from Lord of the Rings. Arwyn is a Welsh boy's name

No. It's a boys name. Don't do it.

Emelene · 11/11/2023 06:33

I know a toddler girl called Arwyn. It’s grown on me, I do think it’s pretty but the spelling would be an issue. Wasn’t aware of the male name connotation, it does sound feminine to me!

HafNedd123 · 11/11/2023 06:32

I am Welsh. Arwyn is a boys name. Arwen would be an option for a girl or Arianwen ,Anwen , Awen , Ariana , Arian -loads of options. X

Mwnci123 · 11/11/2023 06:28

No

Whataretheodds · 10/11/2023 23:35

In Welsh the 'wen' ending is female. The 'wyn'is male

I think Arianwen is really pretty.

deadlegs76 · 10/11/2023 23:32

What about Awen? Literal translation is "inspiration" or "muse".

Dartmoorcheffy · 10/11/2023 23:29

The only arwyn I knew was an absolute witch.

Em2ds1dd · 10/11/2023 23:17

I know an Arwen, beautiful girl with a beautiful name
