Female version of Adam?

KM81 · 09/09/2023 10:43

We want to honour my BIL who’s no longer with us but struggling to think of how to use Adam as a girls (middle) name. I liked Ada but the family preference is to include Adam in its entirety. So far the only suggestions have been Adamina (hard no from me), Adama or Adamay.

Any thoughts or other suggestions please?

As others have posted feminising Adam results in clunky names.
I know your ILs prefer Adam in its entirety but maybe the best solution is using the same letters rearranged as in Manda or Mandana.
Or just choose a name you like and use Adam as a middle name — parents are using male names such as James for their daughters so you'd get away with it for a middle name if not for a first.

Put it backwards - Mada, to rhyme with Ada?

lls1990 · 25/09/2023 15:28

Did he have a middle name you could use/adapt?

We had a similar thing with my sister Hannah who passed away. If I'd have had a girl her middle name would have been Hana or Hannah's middle name Marie.

We had a boy and gave up finding a male alternative. We ended up naming him Nathaniel and only after his birth when writing his name down did I realise it 'han' in the middle which is what I called her.

Sometimes these things have a strange way of working out even when you give up so don't put too much pressure on 😊

I really like the name Adam but it doesn’t lend itself to being a feminine name or having a feminine version that doesn’t jar.

I would wait until you or another family member has a boy and call him Adam. Although Ada has the first three letters the pronunciation is totally different.

Ada
Adele
Adrienne
Adelaide
Addie

I’ve only ever seen Adama used for boys but it’s def not made up.

Damaris? The meaning is different but the first syllable is similar.

NomenNudum · 11/09/2023 20:49

Adama is a West African girl's name fwiw, not made up.

Random789 · 10/09/2023 11:37

Since Adam means son of the earth, how about a name with an 'earth' meaning?
Eartha?
Terra?
Gaia?

DacwMamYnDwad · 10/09/2023 11:27

I have a solution for you @KM81 . 200+ Welsh Baby Names for Girls and Boys | Mumsnet, says that
"Adda - the Welsh version of Adam, meaning ‘son of the red earth’ is a "Traditional Welsh baby girl name"

There are 8 girls called Adda on Darkgreener, but no boys. I suspect that it might be a girl's name from a different non-Welsh origin.

whatausername · 10/09/2023 10:40

There's no good option, I'd abandon the idea as sweet as it is.

Eve?

I mean this is obvious - and it’s v nice

Dotcheck · 09/09/2023 23:46

I’d give her Adam as a middle name.

Boomboom22 · 09/09/2023 23:42

Adame is nice. Mina is good too.

LilyLemonade · 09/09/2023 23:35

You could just give her the initial A.

Lily A. Stevens (for example)

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 09/09/2023 21:58

I don't think Ada works. The first "A" is pronounced "Ah" rather than "Ah".

PermanentTemporary · 09/09/2023 21:44

Gaia? Another Earth name,.though Mina is obviously closer.

Feliciacat · 09/09/2023 21:40

Hey, this is a bit out there but could you give her the middle name of Addams? Then it’d just look like she had two surnames which is normal so wouldn’t embarrass her. Plus if she became a goth she’d love having Addams in her name. The Addams Family are pretty timeless.

If you want a more standard suggestion then I think Adalina is pretty and quite like Adam.

NoMor · 09/09/2023 21:32

Adame seems the most obvious!

InTheFutilityRoomEatingBiscuits · 09/09/2023 20:07

Addison means son of Adam?

neverenoughwine · 09/09/2023 19:44

I'm not sure there's a female of version of Adam that could be made up, that sounds like a real name? I think Adamina would be the female version. Personally, that's a no!

How about Eden or Eve?

Or maybe Addie?

I'm sure your BIL wouldn't want you to choose something you don't love! Did he have any middle names, or a favourite place or hobby, or anything else that could give you some inspiration? ❤️

ConstantlyCooking · 09/09/2023 18:53

I know an Adiama.

Starchipenterprise · 09/09/2023 16:24

Ada is a great suggestion, it's a real name and doesn't sound fabricated, I once had a relative where they tried to feminise the fathers name. It was clearly made up and not even pretty - a total disaster of a name. An the sad thing was - no-one ever shortened it. She never got away from it!

Snittle · 09/09/2023 13:05

Madaline starts with Adam spelt backward?

TheWayofBeing · 09/09/2023 13:01

Mina or Minna are apparently the Hebrew alternatives to Adam. Meaning of the red Earth.

Thebigblueballoon · 09/09/2023 12:35

spilltheteapot · 09/09/2023 12:27

Great suggestions from PPs.
what about:

Ada May
Ada Maeve
Ada Matilda

or

Eve Ada May
Evelyn Adeline
etc

These are nice, but I’d avoid Ada Maeve - sounds quite Adam and Eve 😂
