Welsh names

We're expecting our first baby in dec/jan
My partner is welsh and so were my grandparents and we are looking into welsh names
they really like dafyd, which is a good name in wales but I suspect may become daffy like the duck in england
welsh girls names seem easier somehow, more familiar/easy spelling and pronunciation, so any ideas for boy names?

Aled.

llareggub · 22/07/2023 10:36

I’ve always loved Iestyn, ever since I read Rape of the Fair Country by Alexander Cordell

nye is possible as a nn if you go for Aneurin

i also like Taliesin.

Mamofteenager · 22/07/2023 10:30

It might be phonetic but if Welsh is not your 1st language you may wish to spell it however you want. After all it's your own prerogative

Just felt that it was no need to point out spellings and try to belittle others who were only making suggestions. If OP liked the name she could have googled the correct/traditional versions

@DaNiYmaOHyd

Well i work with Daffydd spelt like that so maybe you are not always right?

FFS @DaNiYmaOHyd is clearly a first language Welsh speaker.

Welsh has a different alphabet, it's not a version of English.

And yes, Daffydd is an incorrect spelling.

For god's sake OP, by all means choose a beautiful Welsh name but don't listen to some of the advice here and land the kid with the wrong spelling!

DaNiYmaOHyd · 22/07/2023 10:21

@Mamofteenager , see my previous post.
@MissingMoominMamma , OSS-eye-n. Osian is pronounced OSH-ann and is a popular name that is the Welsh version of Oisín.

DaNiYmaOHyd · 22/07/2023 10:17

@Ritasueandbobtoo9 , there are 8 Daffydds listed on Dargreener, 3 Dafyds and 3 Daffyds. They are obviously names then aren't they.

There are too many Pheobes on there for me to count, and 12 Naimhs.

Silly me for believing that Welsh was phonetic.

MissingMoominMamma · 22/07/2023 10:17

How is Osain pronounced?

Mamofteenager · 22/07/2023 10:14

DaNiYmaOHyd · 21/07/2023 08:26

@Ritasueandbobtoo9 , It's Dafydd, not Daffydd or Dafyd.
@Mamofteenager , Gwilym not Gwylim. Llywelyn or Llywelyn not Llewellyn
@marshmallowfinder , try pronouncing Nye as if it was a Welsh word! It is occasionally used as a name, but isn't a Welsh language name

Surely spelling of names can differ 🙄🙄

@Sorrento79 , which girls' names do you like?

Whataretheodds · 21/07/2023 15:08

@DaNiYmaOHyd I know.

DaNiYmaOHyd · 21/07/2023 15:07

@KnickerlessParsons ,@Whataretheodds It was my attempt at a topical joke It's like someone who sounds the Ls at the end of words as Ws saying Hill. South Walians tend to say it as Hugh.

freesolo76 · 21/07/2023 15:03

I have a Gruffydd , shortened to Gruff ( pronounced Griff like Griff Rhys Jones)

limemarmaladeisbetter · 21/07/2023 14:59

Emrys and Bryn are my faves.

KnickerlessParsons · 21/07/2023 14:55

I think people will know how to say Huw

Not the Welsh way they don't.

marshmallowfinder · 21/07/2023 03:33

Nye is a great name and is a Welsh name in its own right, not just an abbreviation, as many think. Deri is another nice one.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 21/07/2023 02:46

Daffydd is a lovely name! Dav for short. Meirion.

user1492757084 · 21/07/2023 02:38

Why not use a family Welsh name?

kwetu · 20/07/2023 21:24

I like Bryn for boy Seren for girl.
