What do you think of Collier for a boy? Too much like Cauliflower?

This is my favoured board on here by far Grin

Figgygal · 23/06/2023 11:01

What on earth?
No just no

KnottyKnitting · 23/06/2023 10:59

Oh dear- no, just no!

BlockbusterVideoCard · 23/06/2023 10:21

Fine as a surname. Dreadful as a firstname.

Brintons · 23/06/2023 09:15

Lots of my family were colliers too. I also remember Norman Collier, if someone's voice gets unclear we might say they have gone a bit Norman Collier.

ErrolTheDragon · 23/06/2023 09:15

I think it would be quite disrespectful to use this as a trendy name.

WhisperingAutistic · 23/06/2023 09:11

I'm doing my family tree on ancestry at the moment and one side of the family is from the mining community. Lots and lots of them were colliers. Some horrific causes of deaths are recorded.
It's not a name, it's a job. A dangerous one at that.

blitzen · 23/06/2023 08:53

Sorry, I wouldn't call a child that. I know a couple of families with that as a surname. If you're looking for a name that describes an old occupation then maybe Cooper would work? (I don't like that one either but I know a lovely Cooper)

DuchessOfSausage · 23/06/2023 08:23

How about Sargeant, Constable, Draper or Butler?

onlywayissussex · 23/06/2023 08:08

I prefer Farrier, Peddler or Scribe

onlywayissussex · 23/06/2023 08:06

Miner?

No

MarigoldGlove · 23/06/2023 08:01

Where I live everything is Collier this and Collier that. Pubs, parks, schools, streets. To me it's a downtrodden name.

rainbowstardrops · 23/06/2023 07:32

I like less traditional names but I don't like it I'm afraid. I also first thought of collie dog.

RichardsGear · 23/06/2023 07:15

Muddypaws20 · 23/06/2023 06:41

My first though was Norman, no idea how I remembered him though.

Ha, me too! Suspect nobody under 50 would have a clue.

IHeartGeneHunt · 23/06/2023 07:12

Colliers Wood, Collie dog. It's not good.

CrazyDaisy1111 · 23/06/2023 07:02

My first thought was 'collar'

Then Collier Row in outer London

SpringIntoChaos · 23/06/2023 06:57

As your child's future occupation? I don't think it's particularly safe, so I'd probably steer them elsewhere 🤷‍♀️

Muddypaws20 · 23/06/2023 06:41

My first though was Norman, no idea how I remembered him though.

BlinkeredBay · 23/06/2023 06:13

cushioncovers · 22/06/2023 22:51

I thought of Border Collie

Sadly so did I!

Its not for me OP

DuchessOfSausage · 23/06/2023 06:08

Chocolatepumpkin · 22/06/2023 22:56

My first thought was boarder collie 😂 sorry op

Hey, come on, dogs aren't lodgers.

Chocolatepumpkin · 22/06/2023 22:56

My first thought was boarder collie 😂 sorry op

Me you..

shoopshoopdedoo · 23/06/2023 03:12

I don’t think it’s usable as a first name, for all the reasons already given

QueSyrahSyrah · 22/06/2023 23:15

Also grew up in a coal mining community and all I can say is... eh???

Monsteraobliqua · 22/06/2023 23:07

I'm from a coal mining family and it was (still is in some places) a bloody tough and dangerous job. My grandad had an awful accident. I'm proud of my miner relatives' work ethic but not sure why this is a job you'd particularly want to use as a name. What is it that draws you to it?

Dustmybroom · 22/06/2023 23:02

NOPE
