Any suggestions of Scottish or Scandinavian names that aren't too common but not too out there? Boys and girls! Smile

Names of some of the 1-4 year old kids in our (Swedish) neighbourhood. Hope it helps!

Girls

Freja

Saga
Linnea (shortened to Nea, pronounced neigh-a)
Ã…sa (or-sa)
Signe (sigg-neh)

Boys

Alfred
Algot
Wilmer
Nox
Thor
Malte (mal-ter)

Double-barrelled first names seem to be (to me in my limited experience) the equivalents to more dated names that you would expect someone in their 50’s to have (sigg-Britt, Anni-frid, inger-lovisa)

There are a lot with ‘English’ names but are pronounced differently - Sally, Molly etc are popular but the y at the end is pronounced very low and like an ‘erh’ . Doesn’t sound super nice to an English ear but they think it’s cute!

Re Mirren

Yes, there was a male St Mirren (and still is a fotball club) but Mirren is also a long-established female name. I know of several.

It's based not on the mle saint's name (Latinised as Merinus) but on the old Irish Gaelic 'Muirenn'.

for the saint's name, see here: [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Mirin]]

Thank you all! I really love a lot of these names, lots are already on my list and others have been added!

@MagnusMama You're right that Magnus fits perfectly but it's actually the name my friends intends to use so I can't steal it! A great name though!

@Grobagsforever I've always liked Astrid too! Good choice :)

Mirren/Maren or Lorna for a girl,
Mirren is a boy’s name- after the saint.
Lorna is nice.

Grobagsforever · 18/07/2020 15:47

My Astrid gets loads of compliments on her name

midsomermurderess · 18/07/2020 15:43

You'd probably be best asking someone from one of the Scandinavian countries. For all you know, people are suggesting the equivalents of Keith, Nigel and Gertrude.

ClattyPat · 18/07/2020 15:28

Definitely Magnus! Fab name. I also love Fraser but it is very popular if that's a factor?

bridgetreilly · 18/07/2020 15:25

Oh, and Magda.

MintyMurray17 · 16/07/2020 19:35

I agree with PP that Magnus fits the brief perfectly! Along similar lines: August, Angus, Fergus, Lars, Lachlan

Girls: Fiona, Freya, Ailsa, Iona, Inga

EvelynBeatrice · 16/07/2020 18:38

My favourite Scottish boys name is Murray.
For Scandinavia, I think Astrid is very pretty. My (Scottish) friend’s daughter is Kirsten, which is also lovely.

Massive Bron/Broen fan here so it would have to be Saga for a girl. I had a Swedish penfriend, when young, called Annika - like that one too.

Emil for a boy - just because.
