Meredith and Evelyn

Hi everyone, would love your opinions on these two please. Current shortlist is -

Matilda (Mattie)
And Imogen

Having trawled the Internet for inspiration incase we missed any other dh has decided he likes Evelyn (to be pronounced ever-lyn). I'm not keen on Evie though and thinking people might naturally shorten it to that?

Also remembered Meredith which I think is lovely (probably shortened to Meri) but I don't know any at all (other than from the murder case which isn't the best association) and I'm quite a 'safe' person generally. Son has a fairly common, traditional name and I'm not sure it goes?

Haha yes I've just read the thread back. Very mixed really. Oh well we love it!

smileygrapefruit · 19/02/2017 16:21

Snap Snoopy !

Snoopysimaginaryfriend · 19/02/2017 15:58

I love Meredith but I'm biased because I have my own baby Meredith. We call her Edie for short.

jinglebellmel · 19/02/2017 15:21

Izzy, in my head I say Mer - red- ith, not with a strong emphasis on the red though - no idea if that's correct.

You had quite a mixed reaction there grapefruit - I think it's a great name, and obviously you do too! Can't understand the comment about it being joyless at all. Each to their own I guess.

Evelyn is okay, but there are very many Evies/Evelyns. I have a daughter whose name was top of the popularity chart a few years ago and it doesn't bother me, but you might feel differently.

Meredith is a beautiful name. Meri is a sweet name too. I'd go with that.

Izzy24 · 19/02/2017 15:00

Mer-ed-ith?

Or Mer-RED-ith?

I like the latter.

jinglebellmel · 19/02/2017 14:57

Thanks all. Thanks grapefruit, I will take a look at that.

I like Merryn

thedragonflyinn · 19/02/2017 10:47

How about Everly as an alternative to Evelyn if you're worried about pronunciation/popularity? Meredith is also gorgeous!

Imaystillbedrunk · 19/02/2017 10:44

If it helps my name association for Meredith is Grey's Anatomy not the murder

BingBongBingBong · 19/02/2017 10:40

Meredith is lovely. Evelyn is my 1yos name - we shorten it to Evie. In some areas it is very popular but round here in my sons nursery there is only 1 other Evie. So it isn't overly popular everywhere.

smileygrapefruit · 19/02/2017 10:37

I don't know. Hopefully just cos it's unusual. But the positive responses are much more frequent. DH picked it out thin air and she suits it. Although she's Edie for short. I did post on here before she was born and some people did mention the murder thing...

Whatslovegottodo · 19/02/2017 10:37

If you are worried about your own thoughts about Meredith they why not go with Merryn - same lovely Meri style nicknames. If we have a DD Merryn is top of our list.

UntilTheCowsComeHome · 19/02/2017 10:32

I love the name Meredith.

If I was to have a DD (not going to happen now unfortunately) I'd name her Meredith, Merry/Meri for short. In honour of my mum who was Meryl, she liked the nickname of Merry and Merrily.

jinglebellmel · 19/02/2017 10:26

Having said that I think there are more little Madeleine's around lately and it's not the first thing I think of personally.

Meredith seems like a winner :) really grapefruit? Do you think it's due to the murder trial connection or just as its unusual? I think it's 900 or something similar.

I think it's beautiful and seems a real shame to stop using a name because of what happened to the poor girl, just wonder if that will be everyone's first thought on hearing it though.

Meredith is lovely

smileygrapefruit · 19/02/2017 09:48

I have a 1 yr old Meredith. I love it. Haven't met another yet but get compliments on her name all the time. I have had a couple of Hmm looks too though.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 19/02/2017 09:44

Meredith is beautiful. I do like Merryn also.
Tabitha is very nice.

Sapphireshadow · 19/02/2017 09:43

I really like Merryn.

EggsEleven · 19/02/2017 09:32

I really like Meredith and Merryn. Also Imogen. Not keen on Evelyn due to the numerous ways of pronouncing it and it's unlikely that everyone will pronounce it the was you want. It also has the potential to be shortened to Evie which I don't like

jinglebellmel · 19/02/2017 09:05

Thank you everyone. I think Imogen is slightly less popular than Evelyn according to ons, but not much in it (especially if it keeps moving up). It doesn't bother me too much, my sons name is much more popular I'd imagine, although I don't know any others I'd say it must be at least top 20. I think I'm just not totally sold on Evelyn and making excuses to dh!

Really like Merryn too.

Meant to add that my 3 year old niece is called Imogen. It's at least as popular a name as Evelyn - I'd say more popular. If that bothers you.
