My mil law has been continually rude about our name choices. She basically said that she will call the baby 'you' if she doesn't like the name we go for. She also keeps mis pronouncing it on purpose. She has now said she will set up a bond for my baby but with a name she wants us to use. If we don't include that name she won't be able to access her bond. I'm really peeved off about thisAngry. She told my dh ANC not me but he didn't tell her it was out of order. We already have a middle name decided so don't want to change or add another. Also our first name ends in an 'a' and do does the name she likes so it sounds stupid.

Tell her to shove her bond where the sun doesn't shine!

Sorry, but I wouldn't be held to ransom. She sounds like a delight Hmm

Sophronia · 14/09/2014 19:55

That's terrible! Don't let her blackmail you, and go with the name you like. She needs to realise that she can't bully you like that and that her behaviour is unacceptable.

KleineDracheKokosnuss · 14/09/2014 19:56

Just tell her to piss off.

smellysocksandchickenpox · 14/09/2014 19:57
  1. Don't tell her your choices, just inform her once name is registered
  2. Tell her if she wants to give money to a person who doesn't exist in a form which noone will ever be able to access, that's her choice, it's her money
picnicbasketcase · 14/09/2014 19:57

Tell her she can do what she wants either money, it makes no difference to you at all, and you will be choosing your child's name. Bloody nerve.

Sleepyhoglet · 14/09/2014 19:58

I just want my dh to tell her she is being rude. I hate that she probably thinks it's all me. If we were having a boy we would have used fil name as middle name. I think she's jealous as I am using my grandmothers middle name but she pretty much raised me and I'm not even choosing it for that. I just happen to like the name!

Totally agree, don't let her blackmail you, eitrr she loves her dgc and wants to offer financial support or she doesn't- it can't come with that sort of condition - her problem if she really wants to lock money somewhere where no one will ever be able to access it!

MrsBungle · 14/09/2014 19:59

Oh tell her to fuck off. I couldn't be bothered to be try and find any other words to say to her!

MummyBeerest · 14/09/2014 19:59

Wow...that's a new level of bitchery!

No amount of money is worth that.

Anotherchapter · 14/09/2014 19:59

Grow a back bone and tell her to fuck off!!

Nip this in the bud now before she really starts calling the shots when baby is here.

Tell her it's fine about the bond - baby won't need money any way.

If she starts calling your baby 'you' do the same with her!

I'm interested on what your dh stance is on this? Why isn't he sticking up for his family??

Vitalstatistix · 14/09/2014 20:00

Tell her that she is absolutely free to do that if she likes, you will be sure to explain to everyone why she calls her grandchild "you", and about the bond, just so they don't wonder why she isn't using the child's name.

And, of course, you will raise the child to call her Thing. Grin

She doesn't get a say in the name of your child and if she wants to be stupid about it, that's her problem.

Name your child the name you want and don't give her another thought. She will look like a twat if she calls her grandchild 'you'.

CalamitouslyWrong · 14/09/2014 20:00

Who cares if she wants to waste money on a bond no one will be able to use? Her problem. And if she insists on referring to your child as 'you', she'll probably find her grandchild doesn't want to spend much time with her.

Radish9 · 14/09/2014 20:00

One day, probably before the bond matures, your baby will be a teenager/ adult and I imagine she will be less than impressed with her grandmother's behaviour when you tell her about this. Remind your MIL that you are discussing a real person who will have her own mind and her own future, and not a toy or a pet! She's being rediculous.

Hollycopter · 14/09/2014 20:01

Ignore her, she sounds horrible and you'd be better standing up to her now - if you give in she'll starting demanding other things and will be a bigger nightmare when the baby is born. Look on it as practise for when the baby is here!

We couldn't open a bank account for our DS without his birth certificate so I don't think she'd be able to open a bond in the wrong name. Can you imagine the faces in the bank if she tried? She'll look like a loon Grin

Letthemtalk · 14/09/2014 20:01

But she can't set up a bond in baby's name without birth certificate? She's mad. Call your child whatever you want.

bloodyteenagers · 14/09/2014 20:02

Oh well. Tell her she looses out then.
She can either act like the adult she is supposed to be or fuck off. Her choice. She had children. She decided their names. Now it's your little families turn and if she was badgered into choosing names she didn't want, well that's her problem.

It does sound as though she is hurt. Do you have a tradition as used to be the case in Scotland that the first girl is called after the mother's side, the first boy after the father's and then they alternate? Could you offer something like that?

I agree she is completely unreasonable, but if you can find a way to pursue what you want and save her face, then your DH won't end up being pig in the middle. S few more such events where you win, kindly, assertively but not aggressively, and she will start to learn you are a force to be reckoned with.

" I'm sorry you feel like that. Of course we really want you to be engaged with Dd, but it's you we really want, not the money. The research shows that grandparents are really important to a child growing up. And in Sleepy's family the first girl follows the mother's side. If they've got it wrong and he turns out to be a boy, then it's DH'' family first. The second girl will follow DH's family. But what do you want to be called? Grandma? Granny? Granny NamendinginA? Nanny? "

smellysocksandchickenpox · 14/09/2014 20:51

oh come on! that's not the kind of thing normal people say when they're hurt! She might well be hurt but she's crossed a line and I wouldn't pussy foot around my response

RabbitSaysWoof · 14/09/2014 20:55

I would tell her to fuck off.

Justyouwaitandsee · 14/09/2014 21:02

Just so you know my great aunt's parents gave her a name after an acquaintance promised to give money. The money never appeared. She has used a different name to the one on her birth certificate for over 80 years and always lives with this sad memory. Don't let her sway you!

Sleepyhoglet · 14/09/2014 21:04

I'm not going to change her name for her. Thanks for all the useful comments. I'm just so outraged with her and that dh just ignored her remarks.

Leeds2 · 14/09/2014 21:19

I very much doubt that she can take out a bond in the name of someone who doesn't exist.

And you call your baby what you want to call her. It is none of MIL's business, and your DH needs to tell her that too. If someone persisted in calling my baby "you," they would not be seeing her very often.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 14/09/2014 21:21

Y.Y to funny face. Tell her to shove her bond. She must have a problem anyway with the unborn child (Congratulations by the way) to have that attitude over their name. Names are up to their parents. Also did anyone dictate to her what to call her son or your partner.
I am ttc and the only people getting a say on names will be me my d.p and my d.d. and if I do mention a name and someone says "Oh Ghost I don't like that then trust me I will have the name out of spite.

funnyface31 · 14/09/2014 21:23

I think you DH needs to grow a pair!

He needs to Tell his mummy dearest that your baby will not be called "you" or your baby will not be visiting.
