William is lovely especially with Billy as nn

waikikamookau · 17/08/2013 10:48

I think Wills, is a pretty cool nickname

DinoSnores · 17/08/2013 10:51

William definitely.

Sonny is awful.
Arnold doesn't sound nice on the tongue.
George is about to be very popular.

miffybun73 · 17/08/2013 10:52

George are William are both lovely.

Not keen on Arnold or Sonny at all.

Hazelbrowneyes · 17/08/2013 10:54

William all the way.

I really don't like Arnold. Sonny is ok but a bit "meh" and George is ok but doesn't set my world on fire.

JazzAnnNonMouse · 17/08/2013 10:54

William

SybilRamkin · 17/08/2013 10:55

William.

Arnold is bad, but Sonny defies words. It's a TERRIBLE name to inflict on a child!

George is nice too.

JazzAnnNonMouse · 17/08/2013 10:55

Posted too soon!

William because : George =prince George urgh, Arnold to me is 'hey Arnold', sonny is a bit meh and just reminds me of sonny and Cher Grin

AmandaCooper · 17/08/2013 10:56

William. I like George but wouldn't use it now. I don't care for the other two.

MadameJosephine · 17/08/2013 10:58

Definitely William by a mile
George is ok
Arnold is marginally better than Sonny but I don't really like either of them, sorry

riskit4abiskit · 17/08/2013 10:58

Sonny makes me think of the godfather, wasnt he the character with the huge willy in the book?

Love all the others, esp Arnold

Queazy · 17/08/2013 16:03

I'm really not a fan of Sonny. In order of preference:
William
George
Arnold (really cute but little bit 'geeky cool')
Sonny (not at the bottom due to being unusual, more because my parents are Scottish and I grew up hearing the term/name, 'Sonny Jim' a lot for young people. Doesn't feel a real name to me).

xx

ElBombero · 17/08/2013 21:59

Just read this thread to the DH and he has now discounted Sonny which im so sad about, it was my favourite HmmHmmHmm

Sonny/Sunny is a nick name, you don't need to have it as a given name to use it for your child, assuming that it 'fits' him. I quite often call ds 'Sonny Boy' but there is no way I would ever have considered it as a 'real' name for him. I don't think it is particularly unusual or chavvy, just a pet name not a full name (can you imagine being an adult Sunny and introducing yourself at a meeting or other formal occasion?)

So you can call your son William/George/Arnold and still use Sonny at home.

sarahtigh · 17/08/2013 22:24

sorry am with your DH Sonny is absolutely awful

  1. William
  2. George

big gap to arnold and sonny nowhere

AmandaCooper · 18/08/2013 07:44

How about something that gives Sonny as a nickname? Nelson
Mason
Wilson

strawberrypenguin · 18/08/2013 07:56

My preference is William, Arnold, George but I would say don't worry too much what other people think whatever you choose people will get used to it fast once they have a small person to connect it too.

I don't really think you need to worry too much about picking before he is born either we did what you've got now - short list of 3 names and chose when we met our DS worked for us and we both discounted what had been our top choice when we saw him!

Hooya · 18/08/2013 08:31

Surprises me the strong feeling against Sonny - it's in the top 100 for 2012, above names like John and Robert.

exoticfruits · 18/08/2013 08:37

It doesn't surprise me- Sonny is dire as a name - it seems a nickname to me and often used when people wish to be unpleasant!
William or George are equally nice.

Vijac · 18/08/2013 15:00

How about Solomon, with Sol or Solly as a nickname as an alternative? I know a child called this and wasn't sure to start as it's unusual but I love it now and it's very versatile.
