Help which one? Our fav is jemima but we hate the nicknames and the fact that it may not go down well in the states where we visit often. Opinions greatly appreciated!!

Love the name Astrid (I also like Audrey too), Louisa is a pretty name as well. I am not so keen on Jemima.

we have a Jemima - known by a variety of nns, Mimes, Mima, Mimi, Jimmy jams, baby jamas - you name it we have probably used it (as well as Lulu for some strange reason that i've never quite worked out) - but in truth she is and always will be a Jemima - a beautiful, classic, strong name - and there doesn't seem to be another one in our neck of the woods - definitely not in the whole of her primary school anyway.

All lovely names.

I'ver seriously considered Astrid and Jemima myself.
Louisa is lovely, classic and not v popular at present.
Astrid is quirky and rather beautiful in a not obviously girly way. The possible nn related to ass/ arse, etc do put me off a bit though.
Jemima is so pretty with lots of lovely nick names.

nizlopi- I do think it is relevant that Jemima is still associated with African American slavery in the US as the OP states that she visits that US frequently. It isn't an association here but it definitely still is over there.

I also like Alstrid.

Astrid is a fabulous name. No idea what proviked the nonsense caused by the 'sexy' comment. And would never have thought of ass-anytng myself.

SLVC · 02/06/2012 21:40

We have a Louisa, it is an old family name, and wasnt even on our list of chosen names - it kind of appeared just after she was born, it suits her, - and isnt that the point, the name has to fit and suit the child and don't you have to see and get to know the baby a little before you choose? I think a person has to fit their name and grow into it. There are a few nicknames, Loulie, Loulou etc, but I think it is a very graceful and refined name. She adores her name, it is a bit different and a bit classy - just like her.

I LOVE Astrid. It's my dsister's name. She was named after a Belgian Princes that died in a car accident Sad. We use the nicknames Trix or Trixy for her sometimes.Wish I would have been first born so I would have been called Astrid. Instead I got Antoinette or Anja in daily life.

The (German/Danish/Swedish) nickname for Astrid is Sassa AFAIAA. I believe the pronunciation is closer to 'Eh-strid' too, avoiding 'Ass' name-calling.
Astrid definitely best on your list- a beautiful name.
Louisa 2nd.

They are all nice. I love Louisa but DP vetoed it.

He said it would be shortened to Lou which sounds like toilet Hmm

minouminou · 06/06/2012 15:33

Astrid all the way!

TheCokeMachine · 07/06/2012 20:34

I just love Astrid, it's a fantastic name. There was a baby in DD's massage class called Astrid (the first I'd met around here) - I mentioned it to DH and he even said it was a great name. Go Astrid!

MarySA · 07/06/2012 21:09

I like Louisa best. Astrid is nice. Not so keen on Jemima.

Londmum · 07/06/2012 21:37

What could Astrid get shortened to, sassa has been mentioned
