Help which one? Our fav is jemima but we hate the nicknames and the fact that it may not go down well in the states where we visit often. Opinions greatly appreciated!!

"describing child name as sexy
gross and inappropriate"

Ridiculous thing to say. It is a name, not a "child name". A name is not just for a child but also for the adult s/he will become. The poster who used the word made it perfectly clear that it was in an adult context.

scottishmummy · 31/05/2012 23:02

sexy in our culture=available, up for it,attractive to men. not values I'd necessarily comfortably ascribe to female name

Anonymumous · 31/05/2012 23:02

Astrid Louisa sounds good to me!

teafortwo · 31/05/2012 23:09

Thanks Bibulus - you are right I was thinking of the name in terms of a lifelong name - she will be a woman for much longer than she will be a girl - and much much longer than she'll be a baby! Scottishmummy's raised eyebrow has made me realise that I have been living in Paris too long! You see... "sexy" is a positive word more closely linked to sophistication, femininity and education here - I momentarily forgot that it is a more vulgar word choice in the UK Blush!!!!!!!!

wild · 31/05/2012 23:09

No

PercyFilth · 31/05/2012 23:13

teafortwo, nothing wrong with sexy. I wouldn't see it as a vulgar word at all. Who wouldn't rather be sexy than, er, not sexy!

emmyloo2 · 31/05/2012 23:16

I adore Louisa. Astrid is also nice but I really dont like jemima. I just find it quite clunky. But Louisa is truly fabulous!

scottishmummy · 31/05/2012 23:17

sexy is value laden based on attractiveness, not a positive set attributes

Attractive and sexy qualities are not necessarily physical, though, are they. I would also disagree that sexy = 'available' and 'up for it'.

By the way, scottishmummy, your screen name always conjures up for me a figure swathed from head to toe in tight tartan bandages. But maybe someone somewhere would find that image 'sexy'. :o It's all subjective, really.

scottishmummy · 31/05/2012 23:55

sexyis value laden
nonsense to pretend otherwise

PercyFilth · 01/06/2012 00:06

I'm afraid I don't understand your banter jargon.

scottishmummy · 01/06/2012 00:09

I suspect that elective choice

PercyFilth · 01/06/2012 00:14

No idea what you're on about, so I'll leave it there.

lakeofshiningwaters · 01/06/2012 11:25

I have a Louisa and I love it, always gets nice comments. We sometimes call her Lolly, or Weeza (her big bro's pronounciation!).

Astrid is gorgeous. Would put it on my wish list if DH's surname wasn't so horrible unusual.

Jemima is nice but makes me think of Playschool - just my generation though!

PuffPants · 01/06/2012 13:28

I like Jemima a lot. I love Astrid although it does slightly make me think aphid and also potential nn of Ass...

nizlopi · 01/06/2012 13:38

I love it in The US Office where she wants to call her daughter 'Astrid' and he thinks she's saying 'Ass Turd'.

PuffPants · 01/06/2012 13:52

Oh no! Ass turd!? Ruined it for me now Sad

redrubyshoes · 01/06/2012 13:59

I love Jemima but I think it is frowned upon a little in the USA as it is considered a 'slave' name.

Correct me if I am wrong.

FireOverBabylon · 01/06/2012 14:02

Astrid - DS was going to be an Astrid had he been a girl.

nizlopi · 01/06/2012 15:35

I'd rather be called a 'Slave Name' (whatever the fuck that means) than Ass Turd.

redrubyshoes · 01/06/2012 15:44

In that it was a common name given to female slaves in the USA.

nizlopi · 01/06/2012 16:05

And this is still relevant ... how?

LittleWhiteWolf · 01/06/2012 16:10

DS would have been Astrid.

Am very Hmm at some posters on this thread.

IslaValargeone · 01/06/2012 16:15

Astrid is fabulous.
