I'm looking for some advice about the name Catie with that spelling rather than with a 'K'. I like Katie but to me it's so much nicer spelt with a 'C'.

What do you think - is this an accepted spelling or is it one of those dreaded made up spellings we read so much about on this board?! Would it cause DD endless hassle having to spell it out all the time?

Also is Catie a name in it's own right - does it have to be short for something? thanks a million.

I know a "Kate" who uses the spelling Cate, but it's only a nickname.

I would go for Catherine with a C and use Catie as a nickname, so if she gets fed up explaining the "unusual" spelling she can ditch it later with no difficulty. I love Catherine anyway and think Catie/Katie is a bit nicknamy.

PinkChampagneandStrawberries · 06/05/2012 21:01

As far as I know it's just Catie not 100% sure though.

Blatherskite · 06/05/2012 21:01

Can I ask why spelling it with a C is "smug"?

BBQJuly · 06/05/2012 21:13

It seems a bit contrived.

GoPoldark · 06/05/2012 21:22

Cate is lovely. I know several. It is a popular version in Wales.

So Catie could be short for Cate, short for Catherine.

Go for it!

MadameChinLegs · 06/05/2012 21:28

I'm going against the grain here, if you like Catie or Cate it doesn't have to be short for anything. Names can be just names. They don't have to be a nickname for something else.

NappiesandGladrags · 06/05/2012 22:31

I will be honest and say i think Kate / Katie, or Cate are lovely however i think Catie is just a way to spell a name your own way and she will forever have to spell it out before she is asked. I also do not think Catie looks right personally

Do not get me wrong though, i have a very classic name - Rebecca, but thats a name that has been 're-spelt' and i am always asked how to spell it.

PercyFilth · 07/05/2012 00:00

I still can't figure out why it should be that, out of all the traditional short forms of Katherine and Catherine, Cathy seems to be the only one where the C form is used as widely as the K form. Odd.

Nappies how do you mean that your name has been 're-spelt'? I'm only aware of Rebecca and Rebekah, both traditional forms.

Having met Cathryn, Kathryn, Katherine and Catherine over the years, I get the feeling there really is no right spelling for these names and their derivatives.

Yes she'd have to spell it, but I had to spell my maiden name, DD2 has to spell hers and DSIL has a rare variant of a common name and we all manage just fine.

Catie is rather nice.

redrubyshoes · 07/05/2012 01:26

Caitlin is pronounced Kathleen in the Irish Gaelic. Caitlin pronounced as Katelyn is a made up name.

My mum's name is Katherine and she is called Kathy or Kate.

Kate Middleton is only called Kate by the media. Her name is Catherine and that is what she is known by.

Just saying...............

nooka · 07/05/2012 05:14

I think Catie looks really odd somehow, and I don't personally like Cate either. If someone told me their name was 'Kate or Katy' I would spell that Kate/Katy. I'd think it a teenage type affection to use a 'c' instead, because when I was growing up that was the point everyone got creative with their names (it didn't usually last more than a few years).

I like Catherine and all it's variants, but it must be a bit of an irritation that there are so many forms. I bet there are a lot of misdirected emails!

sashh · 07/05/2012 08:40

Please, please, for the love of everything you hold dear spell it with a K, even if she is a Catherine or a Caitlin.

She will spend her entire life having to correct people, recieving letters with th k spelling,

savoycabbage · 07/05/2012 08:52

Blather, when Anne Shirley gets a job at a school in the 'big city' she meets the headmistress and she writes her name up on the blackboard and Anne says something like 'I'm glad you spell Katherine with a K, it's much more alluring than Catherine with a C. I think a C looks a bit smug' son the headmistress runs out the K and puts a C.

Blatherskite · 07/05/2012 09:00

Would that make more sense if I knew who Anne Shirley was? Blush

Blatherskite · 07/05/2012 09:19

Have googled. Makes more sense now.

Am still staying firmly in the nicer-with-a-C camp though. When I was pregnant with DD, it was the only way I could consider spelling it. The K seemed too harsh.
