I'm looking for some advice about the name Catie with that spelling rather than with a 'K'. I like Katie but to me it's so much nicer spelt with a 'C'.

What do you think - is this an accepted spelling or is it one of those dreaded made up spellings we read so much about on this board?! Would it cause DD endless hassle having to spell it out all the time?

Also is Catie a name in it's own right - does it have to be short for something? thanks a million.

I think she would have to spell it all the time tbh. I really like it with a C though, never thought about it before and it looks pretty, so go for it if you love it.
She'll just have to say 'Catie, with C'. Not the end of the world. And I've always thought it was a name in its own right. Never really known it as a shortened version of anything. HTH

AWomanCalledHorse · 06/05/2012 14:07

If you called her Catherine she could choose whatever nn/spelling of Cate/Kate, Catie/Katie, Cat/Kat etc that she wanted.

BroomForMyChin · 06/05/2012 14:07

Quite pretty, but she will always have to say 'Its Catie with a C and an ie at the end'.

passthebiccies · 06/05/2012 14:07

I have to say that in lots of years of teaching, and lots of Katies, I have never seen the name spelt with a 'C'. I do think that most people would automatically use the 'K' spelling, though of course those around her would soon learn! If I saw that spelling, I would assume it was Catie short for Catherine. Hope this helps!

Belmo · 06/05/2012 14:10

I think Caity is possibly the normal C spelling? (could be making that up though!) But I like Catie, she would always have to spell it but that's not the worst problem, my names common as muck and people ask how it's spelt :)

catinboots · 06/05/2012 14:14

What about Caitlin??

PinkChampagneandStrawberries · 06/05/2012 14:17

My colleague is a Catie Smile

allorangey · 06/05/2012 14:20

Thanks for your replies.

PinkChampagne - is your colleague a Catherine, just Catie or something else?

I never quite get the desire for a different spelling of what is a fairly ordinary name, and tbh she will constantly be saying 'with a c and ie' which I would imagine will be a source of annoyance.

DogEared · 06/05/2012 14:25

I'm not keen, sorry.

HugeFurryWishingStool · 06/05/2012 14:31

Cate Blanchett seems to not have a problem!

HolyCameraConfusionBatman · 06/05/2012 14:32

I think it's a try-hard, made up spelling tbh.

If you like names starting with a C, Cassie or Chloe have a similar sound.

woopsidaisy · 06/05/2012 14:36

Oh, I have to agree with Anne Shirley on this one....a K is much nicer than a smug C for Catie.

SecretNutellaFix · 06/05/2012 14:38

I have never seen a Catie with a C.

Cait, short for Caitlin certainly, but never Catie. Looks a bit bizarre, imho.

EmpressOfTheSevenVagines · 06/05/2012 14:39

My Dsis is Catie short for Catherine, I don't think she has much of a problem.

HandMadeTail · 06/05/2012 14:43

I know a Caitlin, Caitie for short.

PercyFilth · 06/05/2012 14:57

It does seem illogical that the C spelling for Cate, Caty or Catie is so very unusual when the root name is spelled with either a K or a C.

Steer clear of Caity or Kaity though fgs. This spelling is invented by people who like to dot their i's with a little circle.

abbypumpkin · 06/05/2012 19:51

I think it's a perfectly good stand alone name and doesn't have to be short for anything. I think the c spelling is fine ( it's not on a par with jaymiiii or meekaaayla etc) but she will always have to say 'it's with a c')

nkf · 06/05/2012 19:54

It's a cute nickname for Catherine right? I don't like nicknames as the given name names and Catherine or Katherine is just lovely. The spelling looks weird to me. Sorry but it does. I don't like i or ie as the ending. Bit porn star.

sunshineandshowers13 · 06/05/2012 19:57

gaelic spelling of katie is ceitidh - which i love and wish i had in time

PercyFilth · 06/05/2012 19:57

It shouldn't be any different from Kathy or Cathy, neither of which raise an eyebrow.

But my advice is to give her the name Catherine and then she can please herself. You can always call her Catie, but let her have some options.

sunshineandshowers13 · 06/05/2012 19:58

gggrrr wish i had KNOWN in time

honestly, shouldnt try all these clever things Grin

StetsonsAreCool · 06/05/2012 20:07

I think Catie doesn't look right, but that's just MVHO. I love Cate with a C though.

I say that as a Katy with a y though, and I'd probably be miffed with my parents if they made me go through life being 'Catie with a C, yes and an ie at the end'. Although -ie does seem to be the default spelling.

Personally, I'd go for Catherine on BC with whatever NN you like, then at least she gets the option to rechoose when she gets older if it's a problem (and may not be).

survivingspring · 06/05/2012 20:34

I know a Catherine who is a Cate but just doesn't 'look' quite right to me and she endless has to spell/correct it - I like Kate with a 'K'!
