my dad is my idol. He is such a good man. Dh gets on with him brilliantly and he sees him as a dad. Dh and I are having our first child. It will be our parents 1st grandchild. If it's a boy, we want to call our son Smith
Can I use smith as my son's 1st name?! I really love it and it would be a dedication to my dad (it's my maiden name)
Are my hormones driving me crackers?

I don't like surnames as first name and think that being called Smith would actually be a nuisance in later life as it is a very very common surname. I foresee lots of tedious explanations ahead for your ds.

I'm also a bit puzzled as to why you think it would be calling your ds after your father? Is he known as Smith? Surely you'd use his first name if you wanted a dedication. I'd assume that you'd chosen to use your maiden name for your son (it's not unusual to use the mother's maiden name as a middle name).

I have a very unusual name which I love (it does have it's downsides though), but I don't understand people who imply that the only choice is between top 10 and never used before.
