Smith ?!?

my dad is my idol. He is such a good man. Dh gets on with him brilliantly and he sees him as a dad. Dh and I are having our first child. It will be our parents 1st grandchild. If it's a boy, we want to call our son Smith
Can I use smith as my son's 1st name?! I really love it and it would be a dedication to my dad (it's my maiden name)
Are my hormones driving me crackers?

I really like it.
You'll get a sick of the references to sex and the city though
And it does depend on whether it goes with your surname
But I do like it a lot. Trust in the hormones!

I like it too, but my first thought was SATC.

But don't take any notice of that - i named my DS3 after hearing the name in SATC, so....

Phew! I will get the satc thing, but after a while he will be SMith xxxx-xxxx in his own right. (my surname is double barrelled) the more I think of it the more I love it. Thank you!

Sounds OKish to me and I have never seen SATC. I would give him a middle name, just in case. May I present Duncan or Adrian or Gavin for your consideration

Sorry, but I'm not keen. It is a derogatory nickname for my friend's husband and I can't get away from that association. I think it also depends on your surname.

I like it, and have never seen SATC. I doubt whether his classmates will have either, so I reckon you're onto a winner!

Won't people perhaps snigger a bit (the old Mr and Mrs Smith thing) or is that just me showing my age. It might cause problems for him as he gets older too - filling forms and registering for things.

I like it - it is well known, easy to spell/pronounce and won't need shortening. I've never watched SATC (is it a tv show?), so no idea how relevant that is, but I think it is a nice name that seems to mean a lot to you. If it goes well with your surname then I'd use it.

And lots of surnames are used as first names these days - Taylor, Morgan, Tyler, Quinn etc.

I'm from Scotland and lots of surnames are used as first names e.g. Cameron and Campbells etc. I quite like it..but I did think of SATC first. But clearly in 20 years time that won't be so much of an issues.

With regards to your father and the dedication..Smith is the family name, why not just name the baby after your father?

Your father will be delight regardless of the name. Happy picking!!

Just asking as I'd quite like to name DS (if we ever have one) after my Pa but thinking how other 'grandfather' would feel?!?

I didn't get the SATC reference - it immediately made me think of the Leon GArfield book, Smith, about a boy in Victorian london whose name was Smith (first name, but a nickname because he was a fingersmith - ie pickpocket).
He came good i the end, because he was just a victim of circumstance.

I wouldn't want my child's first name to be associated with a pickpocket.

If I were you (which I'm not! ), I would give him Smith as a middle name.

scarelttlips - i'm assuming that if the OP's maiden name was SMith, that her surname is now her husband's surname, so I'm guessing that the child will have the FIL's surname as his Surname

Thanks, I know it's not for everyone and I feel really sorry for children with boring names like jack. Our child would never have a name that is popular as it's just our personalities. Everyone's entitled to there opinion and it's made me think. My dh's family would understand. My fil is known by a nickname (I didn't actually know his real name till a year ago) and my dh has never called him dad. He's more like a big brother (a lovely one though!) that's why dh looks up to my dad so much.
I really like it and the general consensus is it's ok. Thanks for everyone's opinions, we have a long way to go and song know what were having so I will keep thinking. But I think smith is in top 2

Could have Psmith (homage to Wodehouse).

I'm not keen on it tbh. Ds has a surname firstname so so I have no dislike of that aspect, just not too sure about Smith.

Nikle your right. Our surname was made up by my inlaws aswell (double barrelled my mothers maiden name from her culture and my fil's English surname) I have sisters so my family name will die out. If we do have a boy, he will be 1st generation mr xxxxx-xxxx so I have romantic ideas of in years to come a future generation researching the family tree and having a smith connection in there.

I like the idea of having it somewhere, just nto as a first name. I think ti's too radical for the moment. I bet the next generation, it will be okay, though - your son can call his own son Smith (as a first name)

My family name is dying out too - I haven't taken DH's name, but our baby will have our names joined together (a new word rather than doubel-barrelled because mine sounds odd doudle-barrelled!)
