first1 sorry, honestly didn't mean to offend. I am quite militant in being anti-non trad spelling. TBH I would just spell it 'Alicia' and explain if necessary that you pronounce it 'a-lis-ee-a'. But I don't think that would happen as often as you imagine. as diddl says I think it's more American. The ones in your class may say it Aleesha but that's not to say everyone will.

Have you tried a focus group? Grin seriously, try asking a few people you know how they would pronounce it on the basis of the Alicia spelling. I do actually think it's a lovely name. Annalise would probably be by 2nd choice from your list.

diddl · 10/08/2011 14:01

I thought that "Aleesha" is how Americans say Alicia.

first1 · 10/08/2011 13:28

Bit strong eighties!
What alternative spelling would you have then? There's a girl in my class called Alicia but often mispronounced by others as Aleesha which I don't want for my DD2.

Lydia

Others not my cup of tea

EightiesChick · 10/08/2011 10:54

And Lydia's nice but quite popular now if that matters. I knew someone who had it shortened constantly to 'Liddy' which was awful.

EightiesChick · 10/08/2011 10:53

Like Alicia as a name and with the pronounciation you want, but HATE your 'alternative' spelling of it to get round that. I don't think it will necessarily work and your daughter will be spelling it out all the time, and will probably still have to tell people how to say it - your suggested spelling will come out as 'A-lisa', quite likely. So I'd say Alicia with traditional spelling.

birdofthenorth · 10/08/2011 10:45

Talia or Caitlin

Jodyisagirlsmane · 09/08/2011 22:33

Hmm even!

Jodyisagirlsmane · 09/08/2011 22:19

Lydia - lovely!
Talia - Prefer Thalia, but nice
Annalise - love it!

Really don't like Lexi! Spelling of Alissia is a bit [hmmm]

Inspirachion · 09/08/2011 22:01

Caitlin

AmeliaSachs · 09/08/2011 21:50

(I know too many not nice Talia's)

schplappo · 09/08/2011 21:40

Lydia and Talia
But would be Alicia if spelled that way.

Plumpgoose · 09/08/2011 06:56

Lydia/Annalise. Not Lexi- sounds a bit like an adult film star ( sorry!) x

1sttimetryer · 08/08/2011 18:21

rainbowtoenails · 07/08/2011 12:18

Alissia and talia.

casperella · 07/08/2011 11:54

Lydia teapot anyone? (Needs Scottish accent)

Sorry OP can't be of more help...

brodanbell · 07/08/2011 11:42

Lydia is the best, followed by Annaliese.
Not keen on Talia or Lexi - they feel to me a bit too nick-namey for a first name.
Indifferent about Caitlin.
Alissia/Alessia etc - I tend to think that however you spell them your daughter will always be spelling it and correcting people. It's almost like people see the A L and S and think oh yeah, that's Al-ee-sha or summat like it!

SaffronCake · 07/08/2011 11:34

Thalia and Lydia

Thalia with a h is actually of totally different origins to Talia even though they sound exactly the same (taa-lee-ah). If it ends up on your shortlist you might want to check out both before deciding.

takethatlady · 07/08/2011 08:25

Talia
Lydia

:)

simpson · 06/08/2011 22:56

totally love Lydia

TanyaBranning · 06/08/2011 22:54

Alyssia
Thalia

startail · 06/08/2011 22:54

Annalise, my flat mate married a lovely American exchange student called Annalise and I've always thought it was lovely.
Catlin is nice too.
Can't cope with Lydia, I just hear the first syllable and think of jar tops sorry.
