Last year's statistics have just been released http://www.statistics.gov.uk/cci/nugget.asp?id=184 online

Oliver and Olivia still top names.

I'm about to scour the rest of the list for inspiration and to check the names I've chosen aren't too popular

What do we think?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
4madboys · 28/07/2011 17:01

obviously is Merryn :)

4madboys · 28/07/2011 17:01

i cant get it to open, grr can anyone tell me how many Merryns there were last year? :)

bilblio · 28/07/2011 16:51

Tyel It's normally Piran though isn't it? I went to school with a Piran, and looking at the list there were 11 in 2010. There were some Perran's too.

princessdave · 28/07/2011 16:49

Sophie is a lovely name Voodoomunkee, none of our friends/family have a Sophie or a Sophia so it was also on our (long) list before we settled on Jessica (doh) which I am pushing to change to Elodie. We'll see. It might be a boy and then we picked Harry (double doh).

I love Isabella IvyandGold but luckily we used it for the cat 4 years ago otherwise there could have been another little girl called Izzy :)

MelinaM · 28/07/2011 16:48

Is anyone else finding this as hilarious as me?!!! Boys names Diamond, Desire, Heaven and Miley.... really?!!!

NinthWave · 28/07/2011 16:47

My DS2's name is Reuben - we wanted Sebastian but thought that Reuben was a 'safer' choice. However it seems that Sebastian is 20 places above Reuben, so perhaps not eh Grin

voodoomunkee · 28/07/2011 16:45

Just to clarify, was a choice that both OH and I agreed on (only one). Now am thinking it will probably have to be rethunk!

IvyAndGold · 28/07/2011 16:45

DD's name is up on there, and up from last year, but I've still never heard another girl with her name! And I'm surprised Isabella isn't higher, I know so many!

voodoomunkee · 28/07/2011 16:44

Gahhhh, 2nd most popular girls name....2nd!!! I have not met any called Sophie yet and it is 2nd most popular.

Lainey1981 · 28/07/2011 16:44

*not

Lainey1981 · 28/07/2011 16:43

I like it, definitely. Ot common in any place I've lived

Xiaoxiong · 28/07/2011 16:41

Nope - it's the patron saint of Cornwall, Pirran. DH is even wavering because he thinks it's "too common" (well, maybe it is if you're a billion generations Cornish like he is...)

scarlettlips · 28/07/2011 16:40

Just thinking what it must be like to be a midwife or doctor and all day long you are hearing...we are going to call him/her Charlie, Oliver, Ruby or Grace etc...

God I need to get out more..Blush

Xiaoxiong · 28/07/2011 16:39

Ah, there were 3 in 2008 - but still, none in the last two years. To be less popular than "Motty" as a boy's name - that's pretty funny.

Lainey1981 · 28/07/2011 16:39

tyelperion is your ds' name made up one most people would have heard of despite not making the list last year?

JemimaMuddledUp · 28/07/2011 16:39

1037 children were given DS1's name last year, 42 were given DS2's and 213 were given DD's. Only DS1's appears in the Top 100.

Strangely DD and DS1 are the only children in their school with that name whereas there are 3 others with DS2's name!

Xiaoxiong · 28/07/2011 16:36

I can't believe not a single person last year or the year before named their son the name we have chosen for ours, no matter how I spell it. I mean, even "Tyger" was more popular!!

At least last year there were 4 other girls named our chosen girls name.

PartialToACupOfMilo · 28/07/2011 16:35

My dd was born December 2009 so I looked at both and found 96 babies with her name in 2009 and 81 in 2010 - I hadn't thought her name was that unusual. She's a Tess btw.

Although having said that, it's actually her middle name so maybe even she isn't counted in that! Grin

The last two babies I know who've been born this year are both called Max - number 23

MelinaM · 28/07/2011 16:34

My this entertaining! Please tell me Diljot is not a legitimate name?? Ha, three named Boden, Johnnie will be pleasedGrin

Lainey1981 · 28/07/2011 16:33

5 with my ds' name born last year, including my DS!

scarlettlips · 28/07/2011 16:32

Whooohoooo bloody delighted...DD name is at the top end of 400!!

MelinaM · 28/07/2011 16:30

There are 3 little chaps wandering around with the name Trafford!!!!! ...and another 3 name Neville!

bilblio · 28/07/2011 16:30

Fascinating reading. DD's name is getting more popular. There were 4 of them in the year she was born. It's up to 8 now! Shock :o
My name is getting less popular there were 44 given my name in 2007 (793rd) but only 28 in 2010 (down to 1150th.)

Trying to come up with a name for DC2 at the moment, been meaning to get a baby name book, but this is the ultimate one. The currently likely name is 132nd on the list, we may have to look for something more obscure.

spiderlight · 28/07/2011 16:27

We're still officially unusual - no cases of our spelling of our son's (Welsh) name and 11 of the slightly more common spelling. There were three registered in the year he was born and one of the other two is in his rugby tots class - he was so chuffed to have met another child with the same name after nearly 4 1/2 years :o

Lainey1981 · 28/07/2011 16:26

Thanks
