Last year's statistics have just been released http://www.statistics.gov.uk/cci/nugget.asp?id=184 online

Oliver and Olivia still top names.

I'm about to scour the rest of the list for inspiration and to check the names I've chosen aren't too popular

What do we think?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Only 3 boys called Teifi, which surprises me as I had two in the same class last year! I imagine they were all born in Cardigan/Carmarthen hospitals though.

DC1's name (if a boy) has jumped 29 places up the list here in Wales which is slightly odd. The chosen girl's name is just out of the top 100 for all of UK, and not on the Welsh stats. Was surprsied how many Welsh names were languishing at the bottom of the list. Looks like Geraint isn't fashionable these days!

WiiUnfit · 28/07/2011 18:50

Oops, apologies CaptainNancy, I thought it was just a kree8iv way ov spellin' innit Grin Like 'Harmoni', 'Mercedez' (because the Z makes it super classy innit), 'Izzabelle', Mayzie', 'Lillya', 'Maizee'.etc

[disclaimer: apologies if these are legit spellings, but I doubt it!]

princessdave have you found the table? Apologies for the late reply, I was pissing around on the Xbox watching DS1 nap lovingly. If you open the spreadsheet in excel (the boy's list or the girl's) & go to the last table all names given to at least 3 babies are listed. Some are verging on child abuse. Especially 'Jack-Daniel', 'James-Dean' & 'Osama'. Why, just why!?

MelinaM I wondered if 17 baby boys were named 'Baby' as the parents hadn't decided on a name yet & were to change it later (at least I hope that's the case!)

Why were 8 baby girls named 'Lily-' with nothing after the hyphen or is this a typo?

Also, 7 baby girls called 'Chava' & 7 called 'Chavi', are these legitimate names or just poor babies belonging to stupid parents? Shock

4 girls named 'Maisy-May' ... wtf? 4 named 'Marvellous' Hmm 7 girls named 'Hind', yes because that's going to work well in the UK...

Also, I think the numerous variations of each name (e.g. Maisie, Maizee, Mayzie, Maysie .etc) is so we can laugh at people's stupid attempts to make their child's name unique really see the diversity. Grin

KLou111 · 28/07/2011 18:32

list on the right :)

stardustn · 28/07/2011 18:32

Finn is at 132 with 462 boys given the name. You can find the full list by going to www.statistics.gov.uk/statbase/product.asp?vlnk=15282, choosing "2010 Baby Name Statistics Boys/Girls" and going to Table 6 :)

pranma · 28/07/2011 18:28

I cant find the actual lists just the intro-help please.I was looking for Finn-I found Finley and Finlay on Great Googly's link but cant find Finn.I'd love to see the complete list.

KLou111 · 28/07/2011 18:17

Our next door neighbours son is a Iwan. Think it's really popular here in Wales, but perhaps not so in England hence it's not in the top 100??

Henwelly · 28/07/2011 18:07

There is three Ewan's in my sons class - yet that name is not even in the top 100 and wasnt higher than 90 last year!!

KLou111 · 28/07/2011 17:57

Can't believe 3 people called their kids You, WTF?!?!?!?!?!
Well, if we have a boy (due in 2 weeks, eeeeek!!) he will be a Ewan (out of top 100), but Holly for a girl, which is popular, but Ava is our backup, which is even more so lol!!

Fantail · 28/07/2011 17:51

Really do hope that the 6 little Success's live up to their names.

bilblio · 28/07/2011 17:46

Tyelperion - I'm not Cornish, but I went to school with a Piran, (his parents were Cornish.) So I wouldn't even consider disputing whether your DH is right or wrong. :o
DD has a Cornish name so I half considered Piran as a name for DC2, to continue the Cornish theme, but our links are with the place she's named after rather than the rest of Cornwall.

spout · 28/07/2011 17:43

three sets of parents willingly named their son Jack-Daniel Confused

Zwitterion · 28/07/2011 17:43

4 Bellatrix's!

changer22 · 28/07/2011 17:42

Hooray - looked back through my children's years and there is no register of DD1 (so less than 3), DS1 is most popular with 46 others in his year, DD2 has 20 others in her year and DS2 is one of 7.

None of them are that way out and they can all be spelt pretty easily. Just not popular clearly. They stand a good chance of being the only ones in their school then Smile

SusanneLinder · 28/07/2011 17:40

Hahahaha, none of my DC's are in the top 100, but funnily enough my dogs name's are! :) :). I didn't name my dogs, they were rescues......:)

My DGC does make the top 100 of boys names, unsurprisingly as not quite so much choice for boys.

MelinaM · 28/07/2011 17:23

17 boys names Baby?!!!!! ...utterly bizarre!!!!

Xiaoxiong · 28/07/2011 17:18

Also...there were 6 boys last year just called "A" and 6 other boys just called "T"?!

Does this list cover middle names too?

seeker · 28/07/2011 17:17

Just goes to show that most people are sensible about naming their children and take the job seriously!

And I know a lot of babies and know 2 Olvers - one 10 and one 17, and one Olivia, who's 10. Just goes to show that the most popular names aren't really
that common.

Xiaoxiong · 28/07/2011 17:15

bilblio, oops you're absolutely right there are 11 Pirans - I stand corrected. Thank god it's more common than Tyger. Still no Pirrans though and at least it's still not "so common" we need to find a new name!

DH is insistent it's spelled Pirran as otherwise there's...something...I dunno, he's the Cornish one who cares about this stuff and actually speaks some Cornish so I defer to him on all things Kernewek. I don't mind as I know my parents read Piran as "pie-ran" or "pir-AN" (like the country with a p in front) when we first proposed it.

Just to stir it up I am still holding out for Egbert, the King of Wessex who reduced the Cornish to serfs in 802 AD Grin I really don't think there are any Egberts on the 2010 list!!

housemum · 28/07/2011 17:14

39 Merryn's - well down the list! There were over 1000 Amelie's so why does eveyone pretend they have never heard of it, or else call her Amy-Lee (of which there were less than 100 if you also count Aimee-Lee/Amy-Leigh etc). I do not look like a Tammy Wynette or Dolly Parton fan! (Sorry to anyone with a double name, but names like that make me think of country & western singers)

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 28/07/2011 17:11

3 Messiahs. That's going to get nasty later.

4madboys · 28/07/2011 17:11

well ours is a girl :)

i do know a boy whose name is pronounced merryn, but they spell it differently, its croatian.

stardustn · 28/07/2011 17:09

Oh, that's girls. There were also 4 boy Merryns last year :)

nappyaddict · 28/07/2011 17:05

Merryn is lovely :)

4madboys · 28/07/2011 17:04

thankyou, thats not too bad! we dont know any others and everyone asks where we got it from as they have never heard of it.

i think it may be more popular in cornwall area tho as it is a cornish name :)

stardustn · 28/07/2011 17:02

39 Merryns, at no.896 :)
