Last year's statistics have just been released http://www.statistics.gov.uk/cci/nugget.asp?id=184 online

Oliver and Olivia still top names.

I'm about to scour the rest of the list for inspiration and to check the names I've chosen aren't too popular

What do we think?

Evie is a diminutive of Evaleen/Evaline or Evelyn. Twas how my granny was always known (born Evaleen).

Orbinator · 29/07/2011 01:02

Mine is in the early 70's but sad to note other ones I liked were in 50's and one in the 3's! Then again she's hardly going to bump into one of the other 70 odd born in the same year in her lifetime, is she? I think I am fine with that :)

Orbinator · 29/07/2011 01:00

Fontsnob I'm assuming you didn't go for the very 80's sounding Fizza? Wink

Oh no that's fine Font - no intention of sharing mine either as DD is overdue and don't want to start a trend (because obviously everyone would love my name) Grin Will go back and have a look...

Fontsnob · 29/07/2011 00:47

I can't write it on here....I'd be outted not that anyone will care

The instructions to find the name are a few pages earlier, I would cut and paste for you but my iPhone is stupid!

Orbinator · 29/07/2011 00:44

How can I find out how many were born with the name I'm using? I think Font said early on only 9 born with her name...how can you find that out? Thanks Grin

MelinaM · 29/07/2011 00:31

^We're going to need the name Wink

Fontsnob · 29/07/2011 00:02

Aw, only 9 little girls with the same name as DD. Does this make me uber cool....or uber cruel???

all4u · 28/07/2011 22:59

It is lovely that the top ten in GB are almost all classics (with a few diminutives thrown in). The exception is 'Evie'. Can anyone explain where that comes from as it keeps cropping up?
DH being a teacher we were concerned to avoid the current favourites - many are lovely names we might well have chosen but it is annoying to find lots of others with the same name in your class/year group. Unfairly even a lovely classic name can be regarded as literally 'common'. It is only first impressions of course then the name becomes synonymous with the individual but children at school and university and starting careers are repeatedly subject to those first impressions.

We chose more unusual classics - DD is Elizabeth which can turn its hand to anything and she currently styles herself Libby (which I would never have chosen but DH started it when she was a baby and it just suited her!) Go with the flow/against it/whatever but perhaps don't land DC with anything too onerous...or if you do give them a middle name to opt for.

ILoveFrogs · 28/07/2011 22:10

My son is called Oliver, it was only after I had named him that I found out how popular it was. I don't know any other Olivers, and nobody I know knows any other Olivers, people always comment on what a nice name it is and how they don't hear of many kids called Oliver, even the nursery said they haven't had an Oliver for a while, he is still the only one.... So where the hell are all these Olivers?

I'm in Scotland so it isn't the top boy name here, but it is still in the top 10 (8 I think) so apparently still pretty popular.

MelinaM · 28/07/2011 21:59

It just shows how ignorant these people are I think Maryz, there's no excuse for misspelling Niamh! ..it's not that unusual is it!!!

How did Princess get to number 324??? ...ah yes, Katie Price!!!!

ebsln · 28/07/2011 21:59

Just checked, and in the year Olivia was born, it wasn't in the top 100 - shows how things change.

TadBitStrange · 28/07/2011 21:55

Wow in 2010 there were 3 girls named Xi, 3 named Qi, 7 named Chavi and I also found some 'unique' spellings of Maisie - Mazy, Mayzi, Maezie, and Maisi. Hmm

MeconiumHappens · 28/07/2011 21:54

3 Messiahs. That's going to get nasty later.

ebsln · 28/07/2011 21:51

My DDs are at number one - but when I chose it over 20 years ago I was worried it might be too obscure, and was reassured by the existence of Olivia Newton-John! - with the others at 613 and 862. But Olivia has now added a forename and calls herself Lily. Not that that is much less popular!

Umm very worrying indeed, it just goes to highlight the state this country is in! Shock

stardustn · 28/07/2011 21:49

3 Avelines last year as well, which just reminds me of Bread :) That's the only place I've heard that name. I'm making myself seem older than I am here! :o

Northernlurker · 28/07/2011 21:49

Hurrah. Dd3's name is still out of the top 100 and dd1 and dd2's names are well down the list. That's the way I like it Grin

mogandthecat · 28/07/2011 21:46

Some of the names questioned on here are perfectly legitimate:

Chavah/Chavi - Yiddish form of Eve, shame it has been ruined by the C word!

Ila - gaelic spelling of Islay, also a Sanskrit name meaning Earth/Speech

stardustn · 28/07/2011 21:46

Very addictive reading!

Apparently a fair amount of people don't, worryingly Confused

MelinaM · 28/07/2011 21:44

Surely they research their potential name and find out the correct spelling? ..non?! Hmm
