Last year's statistics have just been released http://www.statistics.gov.uk/cci/nugget.asp?id=184 online

Oliver and Olivia still top names.

I'm about to scour the rest of the list for inspiration and to check the names I've chosen aren't too popular

What do we think?

OP posts:

Thanks that just gives the top 10.

catinboots · 29/07/2011 09:14

Top right. Under link to survey. Just says Baby Names. Took me about 12 attempts

catinboots · 29/07/2011 09:13

I love Daphne. My imaginary twins are called Fergus and Daphne

Lou222 · 29/07/2011 09:13

Thick emoticon
I can open the link but can't find the list anywhere - help.

bruffin · 29/07/2011 09:07

"and Rogue???? Oh dear, pity them when they go to school"

I know a Rogue Ember, a little girl. All the children in the family are named after Xmen

HengshanRoad · 29/07/2011 09:07

Don't forget that some of the "wacky" names are most probably foreign. Xi, Qi and You are all common Chinese names.

CountBapula · 29/07/2011 08:52

dapperflapper I lurve Daphne and any future DD will probably be called that. Though I was once at a party discussing baby names and this woman there said her niece was called Daphne and everyone in the family had reacted like Hmm Shock (I hadn't even mentioned the name so it was completely coincidental that she brought it up). Weird, though - people call their DDs things like Matilda, Beatrice and Violet, so not sure why Daphne isn't as popular.

WiiUnfit · 29/07/2011 08:50

mogandthecat, I wasn't sure if 'Chava' / 'Chavi' were legit names, as you said though, the 'chav' word has kind of trashed it - they will always be teased, surely the parents knew that?

King, no one is laughing at the foreign names & screaming racism is beyond pathetic, we are simply pointing out that they probably don't work here very well due to unfortunate connotations such as the above 'Chava' / 'Chavi' being close to 'Chav'

Cattleprod · 29/07/2011 08:45

Nobody's lauging at names just because they are foreign - only the names that don't translate into English very well and sound rude, ridiculous or silly.

I'd expect the same reaction on the Greek version of Mumsnet if I'd named a child the ordinary British name 'Pippa', because I know it's slang for masturbation over there!

catinboots · 29/07/2011 08:31

That's right King. Turn this into yet another racist thread. Yawn.

Why is it you can't say anything on MN at the moment without some fuckwit screaming racist??? Jeeez. It's so tiresome.

I think you'll find that Pheobe isn't foreign my love. It's a spelling mistake.

pinkytheshrinky · 29/07/2011 08:09

Oh and my ladies in the years they were born have only 135 and 6 prople named the same as them - I see that as a success actually

There were a few Chardonnays in the year one of my dd's was born, how very very unfortunate

KingofHighVis · 29/07/2011 08:02

Ha Ha Lets all laugh at the funny foreign names

scarlettlips · 29/07/2011 07:48

I feel really sorry for the parents of these 37 wee girls called Harper! They must be gutted. I would be.

BeehiveBaby · 29/07/2011 07:46

Not that important really but I'd like to see middle names too, I think they're even more trend led. Rose 5ish years ago, then May, now Violet very popular.

pinkytheshrinky · 29/07/2011 07:41

Well My oldest Ds only had 59 boys named the same and my younger ds only 18 the same - I see that as a success to be honest as I can genuinely not see the appeal of everyine calling children the same things time and time ago. And don't even get me started on double-barrelled or urchin type names. Bleurgh!

dapperflapper · 29/07/2011 07:33

And there were 7 Sybils last year - now 0?

dapperflapper · 29/07/2011 07:31

Oh yes it has - there were only 30 Daphnes last year

Yay

dapperflapper · 29/07/2011 07:29

There are 39 little Daphnes too. Has this gone up since last year?

TottWriter · 29/07/2011 07:27

My name rolls in at joint 896. It's a variant spelling and it's never anywhere near the top. DS and DD are both in the top hundred for their years. I got fed up with always having to correct people as they wrote my name out and vowed that they would never have that problem!

Still, didn't anticipate their names being that popular. We thought we were being slightly different with DS, and since then we've met loads of people who either have or know someone with that name. DD's name we just liked, and it happened to be a family name too.

dapperflapper · 29/07/2011 07:24

ooohhhh 7 Amethysts and 8 Lilacs

Strange there are no Sybils - I rather like it - spesh since Downton Abbey has glamorised it somewhat. Forget Fawlty Towers.

BTW check out this wiccan baby names link - interesting?

vividgingerchilli · 29/07/2011 06:46

We met a child called Fizz once, around 8 years ago now. My son (the same age, around 3/4) heard the parents talking to her and turned to me and said "Why has that girl got the same name as Fizz from the Tweenies, how silly!" in a lovely stage whisper.
Ooops.

proudfoot · 29/07/2011 05:48

One of my boys choices is top 20, and even top 10 in London... Not surprised as it is always popular (Samuel). The other is way down the list at 792 (Alastair). My girls are in the 100s (Lara) and 200s (Carys) and I think they have the perfect level of popularity, heard of but there are not loads in every school.

Just checked my nephews as well - rare names but actually more of them around than I thought! One of the names being considered for DN3 is not even on there though.

Thanks for posting this - I love these statistics!

mathanxiety · 29/07/2011 03:42

I have one very popular name and four highly unfashionable.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 29/07/2011 02:01

Hmmm. If DC2 is a girl, her name isn't on the list at ALL with our planned spelling. But it is on the list with a different spelling (way down there. There were 4 or 5 of them last year). Now I'm slightly worried that we're being accidentally cre8tiv.
