Last year's statistics have just been released http://www.statistics.gov.uk/cci/nugget.asp?id=184 online

Oliver and Olivia still top names.

I'm about to scour the rest of the list for inspiration and to check the names I've chosen aren't too popular

What do we think?

issynoko · 29/07/2011 15:56

How do you see the full list? Thanks!

vividgingerchilli · 29/07/2011 14:01

Is Chavi a Jewish name?

vividgingerchilli · 29/07/2011 13:56

Wiktoria is Polish, I know a few of them. It's pronounced the same as Victoria.

gallicgirl · 29/07/2011 13:54

Popular Polish version of Victoria, I imagine.

Quite interesting to see how many non-English spellings there are. Just shows how multicultural the UK is becoming.

SusanneLinder · 29/07/2011 13:36

Wiktoria?????? Someone is having a larf-surelyShock

With some of the names on that list, it is pretty obvious that some people like to name after some very obscure celebrities.

And the misspelling of many popular names just makes me cringe.....

NoHunIntended · 29/07/2011 13:06

Olenska, for some of us, part of the appeal of our chosen names is that they aren't that well-used.

I'd be interested to know middle names too.

redlac6 · 29/07/2011 12:52

Scotland's baby name list came out ages ago!

4madboys · 29/07/2011 12:39

thankyou, i knew it wasnt that common but didnt think it was that unusual either!

mine was born in 2008 and i have since met one in a park, but thats it.

i have no idea why the list wont open for me, it just redirects me to some microsoft site? very odd and annoying!

stardustn · 29/07/2011 12:27

Rudi is no.574 with 59 boys with the name last year :)

4madboys · 29/07/2011 12:21

i cant look at the lists, grr can anyone find the name Rudi for a boy? i am wondering where it is, i think its growing in popularity, mine is 3 now tho.

gallicgirl · 29/07/2011 12:10

@muminthemiddle - true about future popularity. I have a cousin named Jack. At the time he was born our reaction was very much Shock as it was such an old-fashioned name. He is now 21 and Jack is incredibly popular.

Just searched the list properly and DDs name is in there at the mid-600s so not too bad. I did think it very strange that it wouldn't be in there at all.

catinboots · 29/07/2011 12:01

king - I think you're getting surprise/shock/interest confused with racism.

Fuck. I can't believe three other the people in the world have called their baby Obi Wan Kenobi

I'm White and live in Tunbrige Well. Surely I own the name??????

TheCountessOlenska · 29/07/2011 12:00

The Mumsnet obsession with finding unusual names and being gutted if your dc's names get into the top 100 is bizarre and I never come across it in real life . . . Just pick a name you like!

Buriedundernappies · 29/07/2011 11:48

There was me thinking I gave my DS a fairly unique name. In 2009, there were 4 boys with his name, last year, there were 71 including him.

Must have started a trend.

muminthemiddle · 29/07/2011 11:30

But there is no way of telling how popular a name will become. We choose our ds's name which is a traditional name but didn't know any more boys with the same name. then eveywhere we went people seemed to be calling their sons the same name. I am relieved that his name is falling in popularity now.

Mumwithadragontattoo · 29/07/2011 11:10

My DS's name is still fairly popular (top 25) but has gone down a bit on a ten year view which I'm glad about as thought it was too popular when we picked it. My daughter's name was not very popular when we chose it (well I think was at about no 30 in the list) but it has really shot up and is now one of the top names. Feel a bit irrationally disappointed as a number of friends said they thought it was a lovely unusual name when we chose it :( Also there we a few names that I preferred that DH didn't and those have not shot up in the same way. Wish we'd gone for one of them...

KingofHighVis · 29/07/2011 10:44

Wasn't my intention to accuse anyone of racism. Just rather amused as the posts seem to boil down to three types:

DC's names are so original;
Have you seen how they've spelt Ford-Capree
and OMG I can't believe someone's called their child Wolfgang/Xi

SarahScot · 29/07/2011 10:27

My DD is at number 32, but in RL I've only met 4 other kids with her name and I'm a teacher so meet far too many lots of kids.

Lou222 · 29/07/2011 09:43

Thanks Maryz

PrincessJenga · 29/07/2011 09:40

I was starting to get worried that most of the names I like are in the top 20, but then a friend pointed out "that's because they're lovely". Fair point!

I just wish there was some way of knowing the names really locally for the school year your child's born in to. I'm a teacher & last year I had five Laurens, three Thomases and three Jades in one class. All lovely names, but it must be annoying for the pupils (& confusing for staff!)

NotJustKangaskhan · 29/07/2011 09:37

WiiUnfit Chava/Chavi aren't pronounced with a /ch/ sound, it's a chet so it's like the ch in loch or Channukah. And those who give their children that name most likely live in communities where it is as common a name as it's Latinized Eve/Eva/Evie is in most of England.

TuttoRhino · 29/07/2011 09:33

Only three girls were given my name in 2010. My DD's name on the other hand has moved up dramatically in the top 10. Guess she'll never have any trouble getting objects with her name on them. I never had the pleasure.

Feeling slightly guilty for sticking her with such a popular name. Least my choice for a second DD is in the mid-300s.
