Last year's statistics have just been released http://www.statistics.gov.uk/cci/nugget.asp?id=184 online

Oliver and Olivia still top names.

I'm about to scour the rest of the list for inspiration and to check the names I've chosen aren't too popular

What do we think?

There are 31 boys running around called Spike! And 25 Montagues!

stardustn · 01/08/2011 16:42

www.statistics.gov.uk/statbase/product.asp?vlnk=15282 and click on "2010 Baby Name Statistics Boys/Girls" and then Table 6 has all of them

wineandcheese · 01/08/2011 15:48

I can only see the Top 100 list. Please could someone point me in the right direction for the comprehensive list? Thanks.

IvyAndGold · 31/07/2011 08:12

And I have to say I had a very immature snigger at Rishit... Grin

IvyAndGold · 31/07/2011 08:08

3 baby Usher's? Dear oh dear...

CaptainNancy · 30/07/2011 23:39

AllYourCake- I actually know a Jay-J in rl...

JemimaMuddledUp · 30/07/2011 12:40

The lists here show all names in each year except for any that there were given to fewer than 3 children.

CardyMow · 30/07/2011 10:50

For a name LESS popular than the top 100, how do you find out if there were any others named the same name in the year your dc were born?

EduStudent · 30/07/2011 01:35

And only 3 Tarquins - I would've thought there'd be more than that, judging by MN Grin

EduStudent · 30/07/2011 01:33

Over 56 girls called Dolly... And 15 Tigerlily/Tiger-Lily/Tigerlillys Confused

And more Blossoms than Ophelias or Merediths Shock

A1980 · 29/07/2011 22:19

I can't believe that in the girls list, Lexi is 46th, Lexie is 68th and Alexandra is 97th......!

IMO Alexandra is such a nicer choice as Lexi(e) is always an option as a nn. But if your full name is Lexi(e) then you're stuck with it.

ActualAl · 29/07/2011 20:45

My DD name is quite far up on the list, I've liked the name for over 10 years and always said I would call a girl by that name and I had never known anyone called it. It may sound bad but I was pretty gutted when we named her and then discovered that it was really high up in the list and 5 girls at toddlers were called the same! Sad

AllYourCakeAreBelongToMe · 29/07/2011 20:08

Jay-J.
W. T. A. F.?

MelinaM · 29/07/2011 20:06

I agree, I'd love to see the one & two registrations, would be rather interesting!

Umm noticed the misspellings of Heaven / Nevaeh Hmm ...utterly bizarre!

vividgingerchilli · 29/07/2011 20:05

I thought Chavi might be, it sounded similar to names I've seen mentioned by an Orthodox Jew that I know. I wonder if she's on here, I expect she might be.

Mortal · 29/07/2011 20:02

So glad my sons name was not listed.

NotJustKangaskhan · 29/07/2011 19:46

vivid Yes, Chavi is a Hebrew name. It's usually a nickname though.

stardustn · 29/07/2011 19:25

I also noticed the 9 Neveahs, though admittedly that's how I automatically spell it thinking of the pronounciation, and I have to correct myself by thinking that it's heaven backwards :o

Shock at Nevaeh-Lleh

I'm surprised neither Augusta or Augustina are there

Well my DD was one of 59 last year, my niece was one of 9, there were 52 born with my name, but my sister's name isn't on there at all! We always said my mum made it up! Grin

NorfolkBroad · 29/07/2011 17:28

I would say name your children what you like within reason! I have taught for many years and even the most unusual of names ends up suiting the child and seeming sweet. It does appear though that children find having a very unusual name quite difficult. The only rule i had when picking my dds name was that people wouldn't constantly say "WHAT?" every time she introduced herself. It ended up being one of the most popular names and has remained so but I think it's beautiful and it suits her.

Megfox · 29/07/2011 16:35

I named my first son Asa Jon.
Asa was for Al Jolson, while Jon was for a favourite cousin

My second son is named Calum Emrys MacDonald.

Calum is for a friend, Emrys is the name by which King Arthur was known during his childhood with Merlin - and I was totally into the Arthurian thing at the time; I'd have chosen Arthur, but that it suggested a character from east Enders, rather than the legendary king - while MacDonald is our clan name, derived from our Scottish heritage.

I can't be doing with trends in names. I've seen too many children named Kylie and Jason, too many named Demi......
I even heard someone recently calling to her son named Travis......

Name your children not after so-called stars, or by what names happen to be trendy.
Give them names that have significance to you.
