Our son is a week old and we still can't decide on his name. I love the name Finn but am wondering whether it would be better to call him Finley or Finlay.

I am also on the verge of wondering whether we should just stick to sensible James instead. So confused and sleep deprived, I just can't make a decision! Please help by letting me know your thoughts! Thanks

Finn is nice, but is also very popular 'trendy' at the mo, if that doesn't bother you then go with it, I'd use Finlay in full.

How about Flynn, which is similar but not so many aboutSmile

James is lovely!

Hedwig3 · 02/05/2011 15:15

Congratulations Wine

If you love Finn then that is the name you should go with.

I was also going to suggest Flynn.

NoWayNoHow · 02/05/2011 15:17

I like Finn a lot - only know one child with that name. Not as keen on Finley/Finlay, and James is just too too prevalent imo (no offence to any James' or parents of James' at there!)

Milkybrew · 02/05/2011 15:31

If you love the name Finn then go with it! I think it's too easy to over think when making a name decision. If you love it, it suits him then go with it! I've been thinking about names since Jan, nearly drove myself mad stressing over it! Once I took a more relaxed approach a name just presented itself! I have not heard of any Finns in this area, but Finley/Finlay seems more common. Congrats on the birth of your baby boy!

Jezabelle · 02/05/2011 15:47

Finn is a name in its own right, (not like Tom which is a nn of Thomas). Finn is the Irish version and Finlay the Scottish. Does this make a difference? Is there any Irish/Scottish blood in the family.

If you are worried about the popularity, how about Finton?

Personally I love Finn, (whether it's a shortening or not). Lot's of James' at DDs school.

Just give the beautiful boy a name and be done with it. One less thing to worry about!

Let us know what you decide. Smile

voodoomunkee · 02/05/2011 15:52

Congrats! Both Finn and Flynn are lovely - be a devil and give James as the middle name!

MissFenella · 02/05/2011 15:54

Finton has fantastic father ted connotations, I love it. Congrats and good luck x

MelinaM · 02/05/2011 16:33

Ffinian is also another optionSmile

PorkChopSter · 02/05/2011 16:37

Phineas. Go on, I dare you. He can be a Phinn amongst all the Finns Grin

smother · 02/05/2011 17:10

Go with what your heart tells you... the decision won't get any easier the longer you wait, so perhaps just start calling him one and see how it goes. Try to relax. Both are lovely names and he will grow into whatever you call him. Good luck and enjoy this precious time!

(for what it's worth, I thnk James with a nn Jamie is lovely! But Finn great too!)

mathanxiety · 02/05/2011 17:38

Fintan, Finbar, Finnian -- all Irish names that can have Finn as a nn.

Fionn is the full-on Irish name of which Finn is the anglicisation (pr 'fyun')

Would you consider Hamish or Seamus as alternatives to James? Or Jago?

RainbowPatooties · 02/05/2011 17:41

love finton

ChippingInLovesEasterEggs · 02/05/2011 17:43

Finlay with Fin as a NN.

Job done.

Next.

Grin

Finlay James is lovely x

Greenwing · 02/05/2011 19:24

Either are really good names. Finlay or Finn are 'fashionable' names in 2011 and will probably date more. James is classic and is unlikely to go out of fashion but you will meet more of them ... depends which bothers you the most.

Surprised to see others suggesting the Irish name Fintan spelled with an 'o' as Finton which I have never seen before. I think diminutives are usually 'an' aren't they - Fintan, Declan, Kieran, Aidan etc?

flopsy1974 · 02/05/2011 19:47

If it was me I would go for James (but I do prefer old fashioned, some would say boring, names for boys).
Finn is nice, but seems very popular at the moment.

MelinaM · 02/05/2011 20:34

Yes Phineaus is perfect PorkChop!!!

CharlieBoo · 02/05/2011 20:40

I would go for James too, Finn is trendy and popular....congrats

josieangel · 02/05/2011 21:00

Finlay James is nicer Grin

Maternelle · 02/05/2011 21:03

Finn is the best name. DS's name Wink

mopsyflopsy · 02/05/2011 21:07

I agree that Fin/Finlay is very trendy and will probably start to sound 'dated' when it falls out of favour again. I know loads of little Finians, Finlays, Finleys, Finnegans etc.

I do like Phineas (but ideally not shortened to Phin or Fin).

James is ok, perhaps a little dull, but it hasn't risen in popularity as quickly as all the Fin variants so will probably date less.

Edmundo · 02/05/2011 22:23

Finlay nn Finn is fabulous. It won't date as it has been in the top 100 for 10 years now and will not be going anywhere for a long while yet. James is insipid.

Congrats on your baby boy!

3nearly4 · 02/05/2011 22:41

Good evening and congratultions to you marzipanlover :)

I have a Finlay and he is old enough to express his love for his name. He mostly goes by Fin but is pleased that he has Finlay as his full name.

For all those who incorrectly claim its trendiness are ill informed. It is a very traditional Scottish ROYAL (thanks MN for this information) name. Great name, and GO FOR IT! :)

MayBankHoliday · 02/05/2011 22:49

Much prefer James to Finn, which is a bit of a fashion name ATM.
