Is this name too poncey for a boy?

Well I don't think so - but I have had it said to me (whatever it means). Let me know what you think. I don't want to saddle my boy with an crap awful name. But I really like it.

Julian??? Anyone?

I know a baby Julian, very cute.

evamummy · 20/04/2011 10:51

But how many Julies are there around these days, hardly none, so kids won't even think of it as a girls name. Anyway I doubt Julian would be shortened at all, and if so Jules is much cooler.

Lots of names are teaseworthy amongs 5 years old - Willy (William), Bendy dick (Benedict), etc.

Dragonwoman · 20/04/2011 09:08

I used to live near a Julien as a child.
When he started school he was teased mercilessly by the other kids calling him Julie. This was at 5!
In the end his parents had to start using his middle name as it was such a problem. This was in a working class area tho. So I would never use it as it shortens to Julie too easily.

Just seen AbFab's post and now understands why she knows loads of Williams and Lucys. Grin

MollieO · 20/04/2011 08:51

And of course ensure that he develops a taste for lashings of Ginger beer.

MollieO · 20/04/2011 08:50

You'll need to get a Labrador too!

Whatevs · 20/04/2011 08:46

Not a fan, although Jules is quite a cool nn

virginiasmonalogue · 20/04/2011 08:30

VEry 80's and very wet.

Absolutelyfabulous · 20/04/2011 08:07

Those names scream of someone who has read the , " How to Be Completely and utterly Middle Clarss " .

It's all a bit trying too hard social climbing, IMHO.

Really posh folk call their kids names like William and Lucy. Grin

Julian is nice, as are lots of other names on this thread, especially on Ab Fab's list. Elegant and classy imo.

darleneconnor · 19/04/2011 21:38

not poncy at all!

it's my dh's middle name and he hates it with a passion Grin

Lizzylou · 19/04/2011 20:31

I like Julian (also like a fair few of Ab Fab's NOOOOOO list!).

womma · 19/04/2011 20:28

Julian is a really lovely name, it would have been my name if I'd been a boy.

Slight connotations of wearing a smoking jacket and cravat, but I think that only adds to the charm of it. I can't imagine anyone called Julian would be anything but charming! Good choice there.

mopsyflopsy · 19/04/2011 17:32

I like Julian.

But judging by the names on this thread I too am a 'ponce' - I have a Quentin Smile.

WaftyCrank · 19/04/2011 13:31

I like Julian. But I have a Gabriel so I obviously like 'poncey' names. :)

pumpkinpoppet · 18/04/2011 22:12

This has been great feedback. Thanks. Smile and I still like it...

I like Julian very much
But I am a ponce :)

HooverTheHamaBeads · 18/04/2011 21:52

I too think it is a bit wet. Not mega-ponce IMO.

Conjures up an image of a pale-skinned blinking man with prematurely thinning hair.

Only slightly better than Julius (we know one of family friends) which is a real shocker.

hellokitty123 · 18/04/2011 21:52

Julian is lovely. As are many other names mentioned here. Agree that it is a British obsession with 'labelling' names according to class but think names are becoming more 'classless' overall.

NotaMopsa · 18/04/2011 21:48

I LOVE it
I am poncey but i think it rocks

tammytoby · 18/04/2011 21:47

Yes, you're right Absolutely - thank god we all have different tastes Smile.

(p.s. I'm not English and really struggle with the class concept and the labelling of names)

Absolutelyfabulous · 18/04/2011 21:43

Not Quentin or Monty or Giles.
Sorry, I think they are godawful names to give to a boy but I expect you might think the same of my boys names given you like Quentin Wink
