why did you choose dcs middle names?

RueLaChesty · 16/02/2011 00:55

was there a specific reason for it?

The reason i'm asking is that in my family my brothers have middle names, myself and my sisters don't. Neither parent has a middle name.

DP has a middle name, his sisters don't. But all the middle names have been family names.

My 2 dds have middle names but they are family names but i see a lot of threads saying, for example, 'middle name for ruelachesty?'.

I'm just wondering really as i'm trying to think of my cousins and schoolfriends and not many had middle names.

I don't think there is anything wrong with having middle names just because. In fact if i have a dd3 i will just pick a random name as we have used our family names!

So, what was the reason behind your choices?

What a great thread - and I'm glad I don't live in Oman, I have enough problems remembering names as it is, just imagine having to teach the dc to write their name!

I love MNs that mean something so we did try:

dd - has a Manx name as DH is Manx, wanted to use it as her first name but didn't want her to face a whole life of "you what?"

ds1 - Named after my Grandad (using his surname as ds first name, which also happens to be a place in the Isle of Man) - my grandad died years ago, my Gran cried when I told her ds name.

ds2 - DD and DS1 chose to name him after Peppa pig's DB, luckily was also a family name from both sides. This could have been much worse - their favourite cartoon is now Scooby doo, not sure I could have passed off Shaggy as a family name!

I just have one daughter and gave her for her middle name the name of my paternal grandmother who died a few years before she was born. It's Lily, which was also good because I gave her a more unusual first name and was aware that Lily is kind of the Emma or Jane of DD's time so she will be able to use it as a more ordinary name should she later decide that she doesn't like her first name. My other grandmother was called Barbara and I didn't really like the name so didn't use it. If we are lucky enough to have another daughter we will use one of DH's grandmothers' names as a middle name (they were Violet and Doris so I'm pretty sure which one we would pick!)

I also wanted to give DD a flower name as me and my sister both have flower middle names so it worked out well. And Violet would fit with that, too.

If I had a boy, I would quite like to give him my brother's name as a middle name. It's very unusual and a family name (have rarely met anyone from outside my family who is called it).

We like to use family names or other names with meaning to us.

DS1's first MN is DH's and DH's dad's name, his second MN is my dad's name.

DD1's first MN was the first name in my double-barrelled maiden name (it's a name that is also a widely used first name), her second mn is my twin sister's name.

DD2's first name is DH's mum's name, her second MN is my mum's middle name.

Rhubarbgarden · 16/02/2011 21:31

Dd's middle name was my Mum's name. Her due date was the seventh anniversary of my Mum's death, but she was two weeks early - I was strangely sad about that. If we have a ds, he will have FIL's name as it's a family name on that side. If we have a dd2 I don't know; no obvious family contender so we might just pick something we like.

UrsulaBuffay · 16/02/2011 21:50

My DD ended up with 2 because my Gran passed away unexpectedly when I was 41wks pg, she always wanted another girl in the family. I was distraught & still am. Her other mn is from a song by a band that are important to my DH & I. I have no mn's :o

UrsulaBuffay · 16/02/2011 21:51

Oh- obv I gave her my Gran's name, as 2nd mn.

wilkos · 16/02/2011 21:57

DD has her name, followed by my grandmas name (Catherine), followed by MIL's name (Ann)

DS has his name, middle name (George), followed by my maiden name

TBH I wouldnt have chosen three names each, but DH and exP had given three names to DSS (withe the last name being her maiden name) so we felt we had to continue the tradition for fairness Grin

BikeRunSki · 16/02/2011 22:00

Family names
DS is ABC Surname

A= Name we liked. FIL was researching family tree when I was pg and discovered 5 generations of this name in the family, the last one died about 70 years ago. As -I- we liked it anyway, it was a no brainer.

B = My uncle who was having treatment for prostate cancer whilst I was pg. His side effects were a lot like my MS-hyperemisis and he joked with me about "hormones eh!" even though his prognosis was very poor.

C = FIL. My idea. He has always been lovely to me.

themothershipcalling · 16/02/2011 22:04

When my half-sister was born my Dad insisted that she have the same mn as me and my Step-sister so we all had the same. When my DD was born I felt that I had to carry it on which is a bit odd because it's just a random ( common for the time ) name and doesn't actually mean anything to the family otherwise. IYSWIM?

RueLaChesty · 16/02/2011 22:12

i shouldn't have started this, i want to know all the names now especially hortons DBs. Grin

As her middle name we are giving DD the name of my cousin who died a few years ago aged just seven Sad

I am sure my uncle and aunt will find us doing so bittersweet. I'm intending to ask them if it's okay as opposed to announcing her name to them.

midnightexpress · 17/02/2011 09:31

DS1 has two middle names. The first is DP's late father's name and the second is a Scottish family middle name that is the same as my DF's and my DB's.
DS2 has my dad's name for his middle name. It doesn't actually 'go' that well with his first name, but my DF died 9 months to the day before DS2 was born, so there you go. Sad

OrganisedMayhem · 17/02/2011 09:41

DD1 has my late grandmothers middle name. I was really close to her so it feels right that we have continued her name.
DD2 is named after my DH late grandmother he was really close to.
It feels fair that we have a name from each side for each girl.
For baby number 3????? We have used all the pretty family girl names so we have to decide on a suitable MN. Confused
We have agreed if it's a boy his MN would be after my dad who died 14 years ago.

Horton · 17/02/2011 11:27

Heh, pm me if you really want to know, RueLaChesty. I don't want to put it on the thread as it makes me fairly identifiable.

Horton · 17/02/2011 11:28

It's not v interesting, btw.

FooffyShmoofer · 17/02/2011 11:31

DS has my Dads name
DD has my Nans name

RhinestoneCowgirl · 17/02/2011 11:33

I see my DC's middle names as 'spares', they both have reasonably unusual first names so we gave them middle names (James and Katherine) that were a bit more standard. My parents did the same thing, but I've always loved my unusual first name and often forget that I have a middle name.

Did go to school with a girl who exclusively used her middle name, only found out when her 'official' name was down on exam lists.

Rhian82 · 17/02/2011 11:35

DS has my Dad's name as his middle. Since he got his surname from DH's side, I wanted something from my side!

mumcanIaskaquestion · 17/02/2011 13:14

dd1 - has the same middle name as me, but is also a name that has been used for many generations on my side.

DD2 - has a family name from DH side, but also goes with her first name very well.

DS - First name was always going to be named after FIL (he lost both parents by 18yrs and had no other family). He was was also going to have the same middle as DH (which was his Mother maiden name which died out with her generation). But unfortunley my dad died 8 weeks before I had ds so we decided add his name as well. So DS has ended up with 2 middle names.

englishmummyinwales · 17/02/2011 14:07

RhinestoneCowgirl - we did exactly the same. The DSs have quite unusual first names, which I love and quite standard middle names (James and Daniel), which I also like very much. I would have liked to honour my grandparents or parents, particularly as my Grandad died only a month before DS2 was born, but honestly, there's some shocking names in my family and I couldn't bear to burden my children with them! I don't have a middle name because it would have been expected that it was after one of two people, so I would have been xxxx Gertrude or xxxx Irene and I am eternally grateful that I got neither! (No offence to anyone if you have a daughter with that name!!)

RueLaChesty · 17/02/2011 14:28

Horton I'll PM you then! :)

My DD1 has my maternal grandmothers name, Agnes and my husbands middle name (which is actually a girls name but has a very long story to it!), his DS1 from previous relationship also has his girls middle name and our DD2 has DH's maternal grandmothers name, Esther and DH's girls middle name. I don't have a middle name but my DD1 is very proud of her middle names and I hope DD2 is equally as proud :)

mathanxiety · 17/02/2011 20:32

I hoped DD1's name would be used with her first name as a double barreled name; didn't happen in childhood, but she started using it a year or so before she left for college, so that worked out. Both names were family names, both French names (though we're not French).
DS: Both family names from my side of the family, names after his grandfather and great grandfather. Sounded good too.
DD2: Both names came from my side of the family, though one was also a distant rellie from exH's side. The middle name 'went' well with the short first name.
DD3: Name from my side of the family/ trendy name though I didn't realise just how popular for first name; name I always loved that was also my confirmation name for mn. I thought they sounded nice together.
DD4: another family name combo from my side of the family; named after her grandmother and mn was the family mn from my family. Again, nice sound when put together.

mummypontipine · 17/02/2011 21:29

my dcs middle names some were after well loved relatives ,some names we liked but weren't brave enough to use as a first name . also in one case we both loved 2 names so we put both on the birth cert some because we liked the meaning eg pascal because ds2 was born at easter ,or samara (meaning watched over or protected by god ) we'd nearly lost dd1 at birth so it seemed apt.
dh second name was chosen because pils thought the initials would look good on a cheque book .

growing3rdbump · 18/02/2011 16:12

Enlgishmummy and rhinestone - we have done the same with our children. DD especially has unusual first name and Katherine as middle name, DS has Alexander as middle name and DC3 will have Jennifer.
