why did you choose dcs middle names?

was there a specific reason for it?

The reason i'm asking is that in my family my brothers have middle names, myself and my sisters don't. Neither parent has a middle name.

DP has a middle name, his sisters don't. But all the middle names have been family names.

My 2 dds have middle names but they are family names but i see a lot of threads saying, for example, 'middle name for ruelachesty?'.

I'm just wondering really as i'm trying to think of my cousins and schoolfriends and not many had middle names.

I don't think there is anything wrong with having middle names just because. In fact if i have a dd3 i will just pick a random name as we have used our family names!

So, what was the reason behind your choices?

All of the middle names we used were long held family names ( from either side). As I am not married to my partner I have used my first and middle names as my dd's midle names so that there is some part of my family name that remains! They all have partners surname so I have at least continued the female names to the next generation if not the family name!

Lollypolly · 16/02/2011 01:01

DD1 has my mum's name - she died 4 years before DD1 was born. Wanted MIL's name for DD2 but SIL got there before me so used MIL's mum's name (she also died young). One from each side...

I have the female version of my dad's name as a middle name and my sister has my mum's name as a middle name.

I've since done our DDs' family tree and there are some lovely stories and gorgeous names going back 300 years - maybe I should have done this before naming DDs!

RueLaChesty · 16/02/2011 01:19

ooh lolly that sounds interesting, i'd love to do something like that!

My DS is named after our family's football team's greatest ever player GrinHmm... William Arthur.

It also worked well that the MN was my Dad's name and he died 3 months before DS was born.

I do think it's nice if middle names reflect something traditional or symbolic to that family or individual.

gorionine · 16/02/2011 07:56

Out of 4 Dcs , only DD1 has got a middle name and it is because the name I chose and the name DH chose for her were both great and we did not want to let 1 get lostSmile

nipplesofthenorth · 16/02/2011 08:01

DS1 has his grandad's names, DS2 has his dad's name (also a long term family name on DH side), DS3 has a middle name starting with the same initial as my name, DS4 has my dad's grandad's name as my dad asked if we would.

We've not followed the tradition but, for some reason I'm still not able to fathom, all of my dad's side are known by their middle names.

Buda · 16/02/2011 08:05

DS's middle name is after DH's dad who died before we got married. He always made me promise that if we did have a son we wouldn't use his name as he didn't like it! But it went so well with both the first name and surname that we did use it. He is probably cursing us from above.

In reality though he would have loved it! And he would have adored DS.

Shit. Am teary now. Sad

izzybiz · 16/02/2011 08:20

Ds1's middle name is his dads name Hmm

Dd's middle name is the same as my SIL's first name, not named after her as such but it sounded lovely with her first name.

Ds2's middle name is the name that I'd loved to have called him but wasn't brave enough too, his first name is my Grandads name.

They all have middle names as do me and my brothers, just seems normal to me, Dh and his brother dont have middle names but their older sister does.

Bicnod · 16/02/2011 08:26

DS's middle name is the name of a dear friend who died the year before DS was born.

DC2 (due July) will have either my late Grandad's name as a middle name or DH's late Grandma's depending on the flavour Grin

My middle name is just a name my parents liked. DH's middle name is the name of an eminent fluid dynamicist (!) as his dad worked in that field.

boohoohoo · 16/02/2011 08:27

DD1 has a family name and her BDs surname as a middle name, we were not married and he left, disappered, shortly after her birth and I just felt some sort of moral obligation to include it for my daughters sake (she is now 16 and says that shes pleased that I did) DS has both his grandads names, as they have both died, much missed.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 16/02/2011 08:54

DD has the name of a charachter from The Practice. When I went to register her, the woman asked for her name, I told her and she said what's her next name? This was something that DH and I hadn't discussed so I told her. Then she asked for another, I gave her my surname. Then she asked for another. I said I thought that three forenames was enough.
DD was born in Oman where it is customary to have around 15 names which tell your family history.

melikalikimaka · 16/02/2011 09:03

I insisted on second names, I have one, DH doesn't. I picked both.

Trinaluce · 16/02/2011 10:44

My middle name is the name of my father's maternal grandmother, my closest sister has two middle names - one the name of a place my parents visited in the Holy Land (Bethany) and the other the name of a character from Gilbert and Sullivan. Next sister has two middle names - one just a name my parents liked and the other my dad's mum's middle name. Youngest sister just has one middle name - my mum's mum's middle name (Grannie hated her first name and never used it). My DD's middle name is quite old fashioned, but it was one we just liked and it went with her first name. We now quite like the idea of giving new lo (due 24th July) an old fashioned mn. I have done a lot of family research so have a good few names that were family names back into the early 1800s Smile

melikalikimaka · 16/02/2011 11:28

First DS, second name after DH, second DS after a singer!

CaptainNancy · 16/02/2011 11:37

Our children's names are a combination of family names (DD has 2, DS 1) and my 2 favourite authors. No idea where DS's forename came from- DH plucked that one from the air at random Hmm

CameronCook · 16/02/2011 16:42

DS - family names including a Mumsnet no-no of a surname.

DD - a family name and the other name that we wanted to use as a first name

Greeninkmama · 16/02/2011 16:44

DD1 - a beautiful name that I love, and that sounds beautiful with her first name.

DD2 - a name that is a private nod to my dad, who died when I was pregnant. I love it.

MoonGirl1981 · 16/02/2011 17:57

My son's middle name is Neo, after the guy from the Matrix who saved the world.

I'd named him before the crappy second and third films came out.

I like it, goes well with his first name and isn't likely to be a name that's used by many people.

growing3rdbump · 16/02/2011 20:07

DD has my first name (Katherine) as middle name and DS has the same middle name as his Dad, Grandad and Great Grandad. DC 3 (due in May) will have my sister's name(Jennifer) as middle name.

avaj · 16/02/2011 20:10

My DD has my sister's name as her middle name, and my DS has my Dad's name. Both my sister and Dad got very emotional when we told them!
Hopefully DC3 will have my maiden name as a middle name, as it will not get passed on further otherwise.

JemimaMop · 16/02/2011 20:13

DS1 has the same middle name as his dad.
DS2's middle name was my first choice as first name but DH was worried it would be mispronounced frequently.
DD's middle name (as well as her first name) both mean "love" in Welsh, and after a very rocky pregnancy with several times when we didn't think she'd make it it seemed apt.

HettyAmaretti · 16/02/2011 20:15

DD has a family name, someone very special to DP who'd not long died. 'tis a boys name. We didn't plan to use a family name, just a name we liked, but it was important to DP.

DS is named for a dear family friend who'll never have children of his own. My parents did this for DB and I liked the idea, there were no family names I'd have wanted to use and it didn't seem right to name DD for someone and not DS.

SandStorm · 16/02/2011 20:16

My children have three names. Their forenames were chosen jointly by my DH and me. Then I chose one and he chose one. Obviously we both had the power of veto if the other had gone completely potty but it wasn't needed.

IWillNotNeverEatATomato · 16/02/2011 20:21

DS1's middle name is DP's dads first name - he died when DP was 14 and he always wanted to use it, I wasn't keen on using it for the first name, so it became the middle name

DS2's middle name is DP's brothers first name - used as subtle bribery so that I could convince him to use the first name I really wanted

Bumperlicious · 16/02/2011 20:33

Dd1 has both my mum & MIL's names. Dd2 we struggled enough to pick a first name that we just picked on of the names on our list that we liked but not for her first name.
