Hi, I accidently let slip to my mother our baby girl name. she pulled a face that would curdle milk and said forthrightly it "didn't go" with our surname.

DH & 1 both love it and were trying to keep it under our hats for this very reason. It's not even a silly name!

What to do??

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
IHeartKingThistle · 07/09/2010 23:52

We had Phoebe very high up on our list and only rejected because our surname starts with B. Not a problem in itself possibly but I'm very likely to stutter with combinations like that! I think with a Mac name it's great.

It's no-one else's business what you call your baby, I know it would be lovely for all the family to love the name but you'd probably resent your mum for a long time if you didn't choose the name you really wanted because of her.

Good luck!

diddl · 08/09/2010 08:10

I like Phoebe.

We didn´t tell anyone what names we were thinking of.

Presented them with a "done deal".

My mum said then that she didn´t like it.Hmm

And thought that we would change it because of thatConfused

zozzle · 08/09/2010 10:34

Love Phoebe!

mrsunreasonable · 08/09/2010 11:14

ee sounds go great with Mac surnames has she never watched Balamory Edie MacCredie (sp I know!)

Bumpsadaisie · 08/09/2010 11:20

Phoebe MacSomething is a fantastic name!

My DD is Phoebe Elizabeth and it is a brilliant name. Everyone loves it (or says they do anyway!)

  • It's feminine but not too girly and could suit a tomboy.
  • It's ageless - suits both a baby and a woman.
  • It's classless
  • It passes the "high court judge" test.
  • It's a classic name which is timeless without sounding like you are trying to be self-consciously Edwardian (c.f. Wilfred, Edith)
  • It's Greek and has a lovely meaning ("bright"
  • St Phoebe was a good role model who is one of the few women in the Bible to actually do anything important (St Paul entrusted her with taking the Gospel to the Romans and teaching them).

The only downsides are the Phoebe from Friends thing, and the fact that it doesn't shorten easily, except to Feebs. Mind you that doesn't stop us - my DD is known as Wibbly (via Phoebles, Phoeble-Weebles, Wibbly etc etc!)

Also spelling - HV put "Phobe" in DD's red book!

But its a great name!

PaulineCampbellJones · 08/09/2010 11:54

My mam and dad were the only people I trusted with my baby names. They didn't like either name and were also dead against them as they thought the baby would be discriminated against as they were Irish names. (My DH is Irish and we have a Mc surname).
I didn't let them put me off, told them I thought they were being stupid. My mam even researched the girls name to try and prove connections elsewhere other than Ireland (she couldn't)
Now DD is 8 months old and not another word has been said. I cried buckets at the time but am glad I stuck to my guns.

Just13moreyearstogo · 08/09/2010 11:58

Stick to your guns because if you backtrack to please your mother you'll have put her opinion over that of your DH and that's not a good start to life as new parents.

wem · 08/09/2010 12:02

Bumpsadaisie, I've got a Phoebe Elizabeth too, a particularly fine combination I think :). Everyone always says it's a lovely name. Though that's the point, once presented with an actual baby with the name, that's the only thing anyone is going to say.

Unless the surname is Macmebee or Mctreebee which is unlikely, it is a great name.

Bumpsadaisie · 08/09/2010 12:36

But, wem, you say that, but know that deep down, they say they like it because it is by all objective standards the best name you could pick for a DD!

Bumpsadaisie · 08/09/2010 12:38

Wem, I now feel a strange bond with you! We obviously have very similar tastes!

mathanxiety · 08/09/2010 18:23

Lovely name and I don't get what the problem with the surname might be, except Kreecherlivesupstairs' examples.

A1980 · 08/09/2010 23:51

Nothing wrong with Phoebe. There aren't many around either.

Your mum sounds like my mum. My mum is funny with things like that. Very particular. Not that she has wonderful taste in names. My names is fine but my sisters is awful :)

Psammead · 09/09/2010 09:39

Phoebe is lovely. OK, maybe not Phoebe McHeebee or something - but Phoebe McDonald or Phoebe MacAdam for example are really nice.

In fact when I saw your OP, I was going to use Phoebe as an example of how nice 'ee' names can sound with Macs.

nearly30 · 09/09/2010 14:14

It's amazing how insensitive mums can be isn't it!? When we told my mum our DD2's name (the day she was born) she said 'Hmm, that's one to get used to' (meaning - I hate it) A name is your choice and no one should ever comment to your face whether they like it or not, especially your mum!

Try and ignore it and go with your own choice, which is lovely by the way.

LouMacca · 09/09/2010 14:57

My surname starts with a Mac and my DD is called Sophie. Never even considered that is sounds strange.

Phoebe is very pretty.

Isla77 · 14/09/2010 17:02

It's a beautiful name and goes well with a Mac surname. It's your baby so call it what you want to. The family will get used to it.

Ineedsomesleep · 14/09/2010 20:43

Phoebe is lovely. If you Mum says anything else tell her you've changed your mind, you now want to name the baby Myra Grin

bebejones · 14/09/2010 21:11

Phoebe is a fab name, I have a Phoebe! In fact she is another Phoebe Elizabeth! :) I did share my names with my mum because I genuinely cared about what she thought, I know I must be very odd Wink but thankfully she liked all of our shortlisted names! I don't think I would have shared them if DD had been a DS as her tastes there are a little more 'traditional' than ours! Hmm Next time around I don't think I'll tell anyone.

Phoebe sounds good with a Mac surname & if you like it, go for it. Like others have said, she'll come round :)

snowmummy · 14/09/2010 21:19

Phoebe is lovely and your mother is rude. Ignore her.

proudfoot · 15/09/2010 00:50

LOL at Kreecher

Phoebe Mac... sounds great and Phoebe is a lovely classic name. It's actually one my mum has mentioned to me that she likes!

florencerose · 15/09/2010 01:06

ignore your Mother and choose a name you like your child etc etc.

My MIL loves to complain and belittle us she apparently doesn't like one of our dcs names because one of the possible nicknames sounds like a slang word for part of the anatomy in her home language!!!!
She however gave one of her dds a very dated name (70's dated not Victorian) that they hate!

nooka · 15/09/2010 02:18

I'd "accidentally" slip a few more names past her and she might forget all about it. Or just accept that she doesn't like it and ignore. Seems like a perfectly fine name to me.

thumbwitch · 15/09/2010 02:46

Phoebe Mac.. sounds fine. Your ma is a PITA and should be ignored. You have to do what feels right for you adn your DH, not your ma. She had her shot with naming you and any sibs you have - now it's your turn. :)
