Greta

Bumperlicious · 28/08/2010 10:49

I'm quite liking Mirabelle. Amelie and Greta were both on DH's list.

I can't decide on any girl's name that I love.

countrybump · 28/08/2010 10:51

Jemima , was on our list too, love it!

CornishKK · 28/08/2010 10:59

Greta or Jemima.
Mirabelle sounds like miserable to me, sorry!

collision · 28/08/2010 11:00

Amelie

Bonners · 28/08/2010 11:03

My favourite are Anya and Amelie.

Both remind me of the girls in school who were confident and independent and cool but managed to be all this without being nasty to others.

theagedparent · 28/08/2010 11:05

Mirabelle

NotAnotherNewNappy · 28/08/2010 11:21

Jemima! Less popular and very pretty.

bigstripeytiger · 28/08/2010 11:21

Anya

nickelbabe · 28/08/2010 11:22

I wouldn't spell it Anya, though - it's Aine (with a little accent thing above the I which is probably easier to miss out because of typing, but I would add it , because it can be used in writing and looks so much prettier)

It's my favoutire out of the list.

3plusbump · 28/08/2010 11:26

I like Anya and Greta

catherinedenerve · 28/08/2010 11:34

Anya and Greta

Sorry Nickelbabe, I wouldn't use the Aine spelling for Anya because it means groin in french!

skidoodly · 28/08/2010 11:35

Anya and Áine are both spelled and pronounced differently.

They are not the same name.

catherinedenerve · 28/08/2010 11:40

Ooooh! Well, in that case it's fine. Confused Is it?

nickelbabe · 28/08/2010 11:50

does it really??? Shock
Grin I think the Aine spelling is gaelic.

skidoodly - they sound the same to me! but then /i'm quite simple in my head Blush

Tillyscoutsmum · 28/08/2010 11:53

Greta

anyabanya · 28/08/2010 11:55

ahem. Anya. Grin

Cortina · 28/08/2010 11:56

Mirabel (prefer this spelling) is my favourite.

skidoodly · 28/08/2010 12:09

nickel - actually depending on dialect, they can be pronounced the same, but that would have spoiled my Simpsons allusion
Is this Homer Nixon any relations? Unlikely sir, they spell and pronounce their names differently

But they're not the same name, they just sound similar/the same.

Áine is a name of ancient Celtic origins. Anya AFAIK is a Russian diminutive.

KristinaM · 28/08/2010 12:13

yes Anya is the familiar form of Anna

AFAIK a Russian women would be called Anna formally, Anya by her friends and probably Anoushka by her DH or close family.

anyabanya · 28/08/2010 12:14

Anya is Russian diminutive for 'Anna' or 'Anastasia'.

Love the name Anastasia, one reason why my NN is such.

anyabanya · 28/08/2010 12:15

Oh, actually, now I am thinking about it, the Anastasia diminutive might also be 'Nastya'. (Don;t recommend that one though!).

off topic.....

Anoushka is lovely too.

belgo · 28/08/2010 12:15

Annalee is too much like analy. Sorry.

What about Annelise?

meadowlarks · 28/08/2010 12:28

Mirabelle is nice. Do you like Christabel?

nickelbabe · 28/08/2010 13:26

ooh, you learn something new every day!

I only thought this because my friebd at uni was an Aine and she was convinced that Anya was just a bad spelling (probably because people would do that all the time)

and now that you say, Aine is more "onya" sometimes, isn't it? my Aine was liverpulian, so she said "ann-ya"

and now I know the origin of Anya, I'm putting that spelling into my preferred name.
