AIBU to feel horrified at the number of Motability vehicles being provided?

Just read this in the Telegraph about what the Americans think of our welfare spending:

“It also shocks Americans to learn that almost one in every five new cars sold in Britain is provided through Motability, the taxpayer-backed car scheme. The equivalent in the United States would be every Chevy, GMC, Buick and Cadillac sold through welfare. Or every Ford”

One of my friend’s daughters, aged 27, who has never worked, has several children with various diagnoses and is a single parent recently received a top of the range car, got to choose the colour and was given a ‘big reveal’ at the garage when she collected it. She has now been given a new four bedroomed detached house, something my own hardworking children could never manage.

Something is very, very wrong in this country.

I mean it's a bit of a low blow to begrudge a single mum with disabled kids help.
I doubt she can work much as she needs to be there for her kids....should she starve?
And she probably needs 4 bedrooms for said kids.
And no...I doubt she popped out the kids specifically for the benefits.

Boomer55 · 23/10/2026 06:55

Motability is a charity.

Cars can be leased through the mobility component payment of DLA/PIP.

Which is payable, if entitled to it, whether a car is leased or not. Claimants cannot get the cash and the car.

Every car made and every car leased, provides others with employment.

More important things to worry about really. 🙄

As for housing - no one is just ‘given’ a home. If the income is low enough, working or not, then people can apply for help with their rent, whether in social housing, or a private let.

These ‘I’m horrified at who is getting what, because I’m not’ threads seem to be at least weekly lately. 🤷‍♀️

malificent7 · 23/10/2026 07:02

If she was a single woman with no disabilities and no kids with a high paying full time job then yes...it would be fraud.
But having well kids is hard enough ...but children with disabilities is next level hard...and expensive.
The comments about sterilisation are a bit Dritte Reich for me!

malificent7 · 23/10/2026 07:04

Are there no prisons? Are there no workhouses?!

ShattonerfDaParp · 23/10/2026 07:14

This is why the mobility scheme exists, to offer people the option to use that £80 a week to lease a car instead! I just don't get why people have an issue with it.

Oh I can help with that one - it's because they're ill-informed, spiteful, or both.

That's nice, dear.

I mean I get it, but yours is not a very nice response nonetheless. And needless to say I’m not your “dear”. Last I checked this is a forum for posting stuff on it?!

I have nothing to gain from posting on a subject like this, since I’m a forrin anyway so it’s not like I can vote in national elections.

But it’s good to expand the hate I receive I guess, it’s not only for being forrin but now it’s also for writing something completely true (to the point where I was shitting myself posting that it could be identifiable)

Have a lovely day, dear. And congrats on your lightning speed response 👍🏻

Thats just bollocks there are two ways of qualifying for High rate mobility
One is being unable to walk for ( i think) 200 metres
And the other is not being able to plan a journey and travel from A to B independently
A " little limp" wouldnt cover it
Also if its " high spec"
He would be using a considerable amount of his OWN money to fund it.

Oh my god ok it’s bollocks. So the cars and my neighbour and the chats we had living next door to him for ten years were all illusions. Fuck that, I’m not going to be bombarded with stupid notifications all day.

Was he retired before or after he got his high spec cars?

Ok 👍🏻 The only truth is whatever x2boys says. Anything else, is a nonsense that I’ve dreamt up. Christ, some people just refuse to accept they do not know 100% of everything.

Weird gotcha post but whatever I’ll bite, he was long retired when we moved next door to him so yeah he was retired before he showed off to us his first car.

I love the various gotcha posts on something that is completely true 🤣😭🤣😭🤣 Hilarious and infuriating in equal measure but ok

Loggerh3ad · 23/10/2026 07:35

x2boys · 23/10/2026 06:49

Indeed
My son does meet the criteria under SMI rules
But i had to go to tribunal for this
Currently hes 16 and transitioning to PIP
But under DLA i had to prove he has severe mental impairment hes at a school for children with severe and profound learning disabillities hes totally non verbal and can only communicate on a very basic level hes working at pre school levels ,he has extremely challenging behaviour
Severe mental impairment cant be faked
And its obvious in every setting
Its laughable that posters think they are just handing out free cars to all and sundry.

This, you need oodles of evidence of higher tier treatment and care.

I asked because it is relevant. DLA/PIP cannot be awarded for the first time once the claimant is past retirement age.

No DLA/PIP = no "high spec" Motability car.

It's 20 meters. But you can also qualify if you meet criteria for both following a journey and moving around if you get at least 12 points overall

Dollysfriend · 23/10/2026 07:56

@TwoBagsOfCompost one of the first things labour did was tighten the criteria on mobily funded cars.

No more soft tops, no more Mercedes etc. Milage is also limited so your spouse/ partner can't use it for work. I have RA and other conditions. I've had it for 23 years post partum.
Even though at times I've needed a wheelchair I didn't receive enhanced Pip. It is really difficult to get. It took me twenty years and a further life limiting illness to get it.

Your neighbour is a liar and a scumbag. There are a few about including people who claim not to be living with a partner but claim UC as a single person. I believe PIP fraud is the lowest of all rogue benefit claims.

If we hadn't raised the pension age the young would have some job opportunities and those that are ill and tired could have a pension and retire. Many people claim PIP because they can't access their pension. Go into any retail outlet and you'll find mature workers who would really like to be retired. They've paid their full NI and loose PIP at retirement although they can get attendance allowance (half the money) if they have nothing else and are disabled. Young people are claiming pip for MH conditions as they are unsupported with no access to therapy or employment opportunities that would give them a sense of worth
If you saw daily the rubbish that the media puts out about feckless young people (NEETS apparently) you too would feel distraught.

I thought I was disabled but it was nothing compared to the last two years of my life. I'd happily taken myself to Switzerland. My pension contributions would die with me as you can't claim as a widower anymore!

Oh and the work projects 'aka workhouses' don't exist because it's against our human rights. I'd be very interested to know what product or service they'd be providing because we make nothing in the UK. A laundry perhaps?

emuloc · 23/10/2026 08:32

LuckyTraybake · 23/10/2026 02:04

Some people do. I can think of 2 off the top
of of my head who drive mobility cars and who really really don’t need them.

Why would they be paying out, for something that you think, that they do not need?

Dollysfriend · 23/10/2026 09:06

Just a bit of reverse psychology here.

If outraged 'tax payers' repeatedly tell others that it's really easy to get a paid for mobility car it will increase the amount of 'fraudsters' who apply.

If they spent their time shouting about how hard it is to get a car then the 'feckless' may not apply?

That's how our DD1 (17) qualifies for the enhanced rate. She can't plan journeys independently.

I'm sure there would be people who think she shouldn’t be entitled to the enhanced rate as well, as her disabilities (autism, epilepsy and FASD) are hidden.

What were you playing at? You were doing it wrong - all you need to do is put on a bit of limp and say 'Ooh me back' every now and again and you get given a gold plated Bentley. My neighbour told me.
