AIBU to feel horrified at the number of Motability vehicles being provided?

Just read this in the Telegraph about what the Americans think of our welfare spending:

“It also shocks Americans to learn that almost one in every five new cars sold in Britain is provided through Motability, the taxpayer-backed car scheme. The equivalent in the United States would be every Chevy, GMC, Buick and Cadillac sold through welfare. Or every Ford”

One of my friend’s daughters, aged 27, who has never worked, has several children with various diagnoses and is a single parent recently received a top of the range car, got to choose the colour and was given a ‘big reveal’ at the garage when she collected it. She has now been given a new four bedroomed detached house, something my own hardworking children could never manage.

Something is very, very wrong in this country.

She struck gold with the 4 bedroomed house though! Who gave her that?

Misc123 · 22/10/2026 19:48

they are not given cars they are leased and paid for out of pip etc if want certain types of car someone can make up difference themselves. Reason why new cars is that they often have to be adapted to the disability. To qualify for scheme you have to be in receipt of following

To join the scheme, you must receive one of the following qualifying benefits with at least 12 months remaining on your award:

  • Enhanced Rate Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
  • Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
  • Higher Rate Mobility Component of Child Disability Payment (Scotland)
  • Enhanced Rate Mobility Component of Adult Disability Payment (Scotland)
  • Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP)
  • War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement

20+ years ago I worked in social housing. You might be surprised to know that quite a lot of tenants never paid any rent, it was all covered by housing benefit.

Those days are long gone.

SchoolSwimming · 22/10/2026 19:47

So a family with high needs are able to live comfortably and get around to I assume multiple medical appointments with ease? How is that a bad thing?
This will be consistency , stability and needs met for them. Long term outcomes improved.

Would you rather they were inadequately housed, dragged round on buses to appointments and if they can’t afford it they miss appointments/school? How will that help the country long term ?

emuloc · 22/10/2026 19:47

🥱 What was the 'big reveal' that she got at the garage, when collecting the car? Asking for a friend, who is bored, on her shift at Wendy's.

notateenager · 22/10/2026 19:47

Give is surely the wrong word. The single parent family with disabilities will have been assessed as requiring a certain size of house. The benefits system will have totted up the entitlement to cash. Some of that entitlement the family have chosen to spend on leasing the motability vehicle. Neither the house or the vehicle belong to them.

How odd she’s been given a house, which local authority is giving people houses, rather than renting out their properties?

moonraker0 · 22/10/2026 19:46

If people are choosing the car then they are not getting the money as well. The payment comes out of the award and you have to be receiving the higher rate to receive it, anyone who’s applied will tell you that’s not as easy as most people think but everyone knows ‘someone’ who’s ‘getting everything for free’, in this case a four bedroom house as well apparently 😏

TheFishFish · 22/10/2026 19:46

Oh look, it's today’s goady as fuck benefit bashing thread. Right on cue.

Housing Association? Local Authority?

Oh yes. Because people with neuro diverse needs and/or mental health issues are all given everything on a plate and routinely leap up housing lists.

Also given the state of America these days, they really shouldn't be throwing stones...

JWhipple · 22/10/2026 19:45

You're not wrong! I told my GP I was a bit sad and sometimes I was so sad I could barely bring myself to line up my tins of beans with the labels all facing the same way.
Before I could even say anything about woke, the GP had tapped the side of their nose, winked at me and opened a secret door.

I was then on an exciting gameshow and within five minutes was driving away in my brand-new rangerover with a blue badge, on my way to my newly acquired seven bedded mansion with a separate stable block.

It really was that easy.

Gingerkittykat · 22/10/2026 19:45

4/10 for trying OP, you would have got more points if you had mentioned her and her children all get a free car for their ADHD.

What are the ‘various diagnosis’?

I bet they are all made up and this woman tells everyone she meets all about how she is defrauding the system.

Hope you’re ready for a pile on OP. You’re not wrong though.

She is wrong.

KaySam · 22/10/2026 19:42

So one in every 5 cars is a motobility one which means the majority of new cars aren’t.

who has given her a house ?

she has got the car and probably the house due to her children having several disabilities, they’re not given out for the fun of it,

nice for the rage bait post it’s been a few days since the last one,

rockstarshoes · 22/10/2026 19:42

Sure she has. I shall get my disability bingo card out. I will be back in two ticks.
