AIBU to feel horrified at the number of Motability vehicles being provided?

Just read this in the Telegraph about what the Americans think of our welfare spending:

“It also shocks Americans to learn that almost one in every five new cars sold in Britain is provided through Motability, the taxpayer-backed car scheme. The equivalent in the United States would be every Chevy, GMC, Buick and Cadillac sold through welfare. Or every Ford”

One of my friend’s daughters, aged 27, who has never worked, has several children with various diagnoses and is a single parent recently received a top of the range car, got to choose the colour and was given a ‘big reveal’ at the garage when she collected it. She has now been given a new four bedroomed detached house, something my own hardworking children could never manage.

Something is very, very wrong in this country.

I am a true lefty, but honestly this blows my mind. In my own area the number of cars with the disabled badge has rocketed and they are all brand new flash cars!!

It's almost daily, mumsnet should really stamp down on the benefit bashing, the hate directed at SEN kids and disabled people. Along with the last bastion of acceptable hate....fat. come on MN.....tell us why you moderate race and religion but let these threads stand?

No real need for.MNHQ to do that when 90% of such threads are jumped on by all those claiming our benefits system is totally fair and how dare anyone question it in any form whatsoever..?

I’m a firm supporter of both Pip and Motability. I know people for whom PIPs have been transformative and I also know people who clearly qualified but were refused.

otoh, I also know of someone who didn’t genuinely qualify for Motability but who bizarrely got it year after year. He also could easily have done IT work from home, as he’d taught it, and he could have earned a good salary but for reasons best known to themselves the assessors never realised that.

What on earth has pip and motability got to do with working from home?

Given a house?

Wow, thats amazing.

You have to have somewhere to keep the free goat

Lomonald · 22/10/2026 20:09

Mobility or care component of pip is not an out of work benefit, maybe you would know that if you had read the gazillions of other posts about it.

Apparently almost 50% of people disagree with you.. not sure why.
I was flabbergasted to see today that you cam go to Hampton Court for £1 if you are on any kind of benefit. Meanwhile costs the rest of us some £70 quid for q adult and 2 children. Needless to say i wont be going...

That is your choice, of course. It is sad that some people are willing to cut off their nose, to spite their face like that, if they can afford the entrance fee.

Lomonald · 22/10/2026 20:07

Some Americans i know are not getting their disability benefits because they dare to be married , or not getting enough medical supplies that they are washing and boiling appliances and catheters because they have to wait till their insurance company releases permission for another prescription.or they are buying cheaper off Amazon , so of course "Americans " are going to think we are given cars like sweets.

They aren’t means tested though. PIP is additional money to the household expenditure.
I personally know of two young people with motability cars where one has just bought a house at 25 and the other lives in a high income home. Not saying they shouldn’t have access to a car but being able to get a brand new showroom car from a state benefit is taking the piss.

Needmorelego · 22/10/2026 20:05

Why would Americans care what our welfare costs are?
Most of them probably couldn't find us on the map let alone give any thoughts about what the UK spending budgets are all about.
Also....
No. I can't say what I actually want to say.
I was banned from Mumsnet for a week last time I did that.

Sorry . Misreading of original post. A top of the range car of any make still requires additional payment over and above the mobility allowance

WildFatball · 22/10/2026 20:02

You haven't got a fucking clue. Motability is paid for by PIP. In other words you use your PIP to lease a car instead. It's extremely expensive. Try living with a disability and try being a carer of a child/young adult/older adult with a disability and looking after them for the rest of your life. You wouldn't last one year before you started whinging about how hard life was and how unfair it was.

I will tell you what is unfair. Being disabled. Now that really is fucking unfair.

Whisperwaves · 22/10/2026 20:02
Hmm
Smout · 22/10/2026 20:01

Range Rovers are not available on Motability. If they were she would be paying many thousands on top of her mobility allowance

And details very specifically how she spends her free cash on getting her nails done and going to maccies daily.

And botox injections, must not forget the botox.

WobblyJogger · 22/10/2026 19:59

Half term started early then.
Goady fucker.

Those days are long gone.

Aye it's UC to private landlords who make up the biggest chunk of the UKs UC bill.
Mmm if only council housing hadn't been flogged off.
Affordable housing on lowish incomes.
Also don't give a flying fuck what Americans think as we've seen from their electorate a fair percentage of them can't think.

NormasArse · 22/10/2026 19:58

Bet she’d rather her children were healthy.

WhereverIlaymycatthatsmyhome · 22/10/2026 19:56

What absolute bollocks. Nobody is given a car or a house as part of disability benefits. Do you really believe that shit @DawnRaiderNight?

Motability cars are provided INSTEAD OF CASH PIP OR DLA BENEFITS.

Social housing is provided according to needs and is RENTED. She hasn’t been given a house!

I bet they are all made up and this woman tells everyone she meets all about how she is defrauding the system.

. It’s not a great look being jealous of disabled people . Perhaps look at it another way and be grateful that you and your “hardworking “ children don’t qualify . My very hardworking daughter qualifies for a mobility vehicle because my DGD is severely disabled . We all wish she didn’t need one.
