AIBU to feel horrified at the number of Motability vehicles being provided?

Just read this in the Telegraph about what the Americans think of our welfare spending:

“It also shocks Americans to learn that almost one in every five new cars sold in Britain is provided through Motability, the taxpayer-backed car scheme. The equivalent in the United States would be every Chevy, GMC, Buick and Cadillac sold through welfare. Or every Ford”

One of my friend’s daughters, aged 27, who has never worked, has several children with various diagnoses and is a single parent recently received a top of the range car, got to choose the colour and was given a ‘big reveal’ at the garage when she collected it. She has now been given a new four bedroomed detached house, something my own hardworking children could never manage.

Something is very, very wrong in this country.

I really can't believe someone on MN would come up with that shite... and sadly it is not the first time either. A lot of people on here hate the unemployed and disabled.
Disability can happen to anyone at any time. Being able bodied/minded is only temporary.

And yet all these people are so horrified daily. They know that punching down on skin colour or religious beliefs will have them banned but some things are fair game to the lucky sods.

ShattonerfDaParp · 22/10/2026 20:54

I think I know this person too OP; have they by any chance been on 17 foreign holidays this year, and have a tendency to share an unusual amount of medical/financial information with all and sundry which handily enables you to tell everybody else about it? For how long are we hardworkingtaxpayers going to let these people who definitely exist take the piss so comprehensively? Thank God for the right-thinking opinions of the Daily Telegraph, I shall subscribe tomorrow.

It was all wrapped up by the Dealership and she was asked to remove the wrapping with a flourish

Urgh imagine giving someone a nice experience blergghh

What do you want them to say? Here’s your new free car, now fuck off?

How does this affect you? The cars are leased and paid for from PIP. If people did not have the car, they would still get the money.

I find it very sad that someone is horrified at disabled people being able to have independence.

Ho xeno ,You're well versed in these types of threads as I see your name often.
I think a lot of it comes from a place of spite and hatred and is fuelled by certain sections of the media..IE The Mail on line a daily hate fest across the board.

The mother is not disabled. ADHD and in a mainstream school is not a life limiting disability. The mother has never worked! Ever!
No one wants to pay for her to drive a new car and live in a brand new tax payer funded home.

As a taxpayer, I fund the NHS and civil service, does this mean I get to tell people who work in the public sector they can’t buy a new car or have a new-build car because I fund their lifestyle?

You want to bring workhouses back?

What does the 'T' in VAT stand for?

The mind boggles?!

Or a disgruntled tax payer? Nothing bot like about her observations.
Do you think it’s acceptable to have your entire life and that of your children financed by other people?
Why would said woman even think she has the right to have one child if she has never had a job. And then to have the audacity to have two more!?

Exactly, do we judge women with rich husbands and five children who love being SAHMs? No, plenty of people wish they could do the same.

So maybe they should also claim benefits and disabilities and get free houses and cars? After all, it’s dead easy, why would anyone ever work?

Speaking as someone who has spent hundreds of hours on a PIP application for my DSD, only for her to be refused PIP completely with an award of zero across the board, because apparently being fluent in the European language of the country she lived in between the ages of seven and 24 means she can cook a meal from scratch, I’d like to see people try and get PIP by pretending.

It is really tough, even when she is brain damaged from birth with 30 years of medical and SEN records in two countries. Mandatory reconsideration is being decided now, and I’m hopeful she will get it because the DWP did not even apply the legal test as required by the regulations, which is the least claimants can expect.

So I’m asking politely that people don’t make sweeping statements about the ease of claiming benefits when they don’t know people’s exact circumstances or the details of their disabilities. Just because posters disapprove of claimants’ lifestyles doesn’t mean they are not entitled to the benefits they get. How would they like it if their employer said we’re paying you, so you can’t spend your wages on alcohol and parties and a nice car? Particularly if they work for the NHS or civil service, because after all, we pay their wages through taxation.

Yeah, along with a side of euthanasia and shaming. What a shortsighted opinion.

XenoBitch · 22/10/2026 20:49

Greenismyfavouritecolournow · 22/10/2026 20:41

If you don’t have a job you don’t pay tax. Paying some tax back to the government out of the money they GIVE you in the first place isn’t ’paying tax’ 😂

So what should happen to her?

KermitsABadInfluence · 22/10/2026 20:47

Greenismyfavouritecolournow · 22/10/2026 20:43

Not at all. I’d put her in a communal living facility with other women who can look after each other’s children so they can take turns to go out to work. And maybe a subsidised bus pass to get there. A brand new car and a new 4 bedroom house would not be even near the table.

PIP is not an out of work benefit.

BusMumsHoliday · 22/10/2026 20:43

So the children initially had "various diagnoses" but now they've only got ADHD? And they're in mainstream school but enough of a danger when they walk that they qualify for higher rate mobility component of DLA, which is required for motability?

Sure. Absolutely. Totally believe this.

Greenismyfavouritecolournow · 22/10/2026 20:43

HPFA · 22/10/2026 20:39

So are you suggesting these children are put into care? That will cost a lot more than a car!

YourLoftyCyanZebra · 22/10/2026 20:43

Just wanted to say that I neither receive PIP or have a "free" car. Doesn't stop me from having a clear conscience when faced with most of these threads that continually punch down with absolute rot.

What makes you think that those with PIP dont pay tax?? Unbelievable.

It’s tedious and divisive and quoting D Telegraph stories - who gives a monkeys what Americans think about UK welfare spending?

I should have put ‘provided’ with a new house for which she receives housing benefit

Gosh....yes that's the problem with your post. People being provided something that you don't have is not the problem. If you think it's easy apply for PIP, use the award to get a new car and then come back and tell us you really need it, unlike those that you think don't. Every blinking day there are people spouting this bull. MN users are coming across as they mostly want no disability until they're all dead.

HPFA · 22/10/2026 20:38

Seymour5 · 22/10/2026 20:24

The rich can afford it!

However, in reality it can often mean that a working family with high housing and commuting costs can have less disposable income than a family to whom those discounts apply. It can seem a tad unfair perhaps?

Unless you expect a museum to require every entrant to submit to an income and expenditure audit then that might be the case.

It just might be that in order for poorer children to occasionally have the same experiences as their luckier contemporaries a few "undeserving" people will get a freebie. Maybe that's a price worth paying.
