AIBU to feel horrified at the number of Motability vehicles being provided?

Just read this in the Telegraph about what the Americans think of our welfare spending:

“It also shocks Americans to learn that almost one in every five new cars sold in Britain is provided through Motability, the taxpayer-backed car scheme. The equivalent in the United States would be every Chevy, GMC, Buick and Cadillac sold through welfare. Or every Ford”

One of my friend’s daughters, aged 27, who has never worked, has several children with various diagnoses and is a single parent recently received a top of the range car, got to choose the colour and was given a ‘big reveal’ at the garage when she collected it. She has now been given a new four bedroomed detached house, something my own hardworking children could never manage.

Something is very, very wrong in this country.

Absolutely. But these are incredibly expensive cars that people in the same demographic without a disability could never afford.
People.are struggling to pay MOT, tax and insurance on basic second hand cars to get to work everyday. Seeing people with issues that prevent them working or doing the bare minimum, getting an amazing car that costs nothing to run, seems unfair,

What do you deem to be an amazing car? Do you mean because it is new?

So who is paying for the petrol, that goes in the car? Is it free? The car is not free either, it has to be paid for monthly, out of the PIP allowance.

Apart from the £80 a week they pay out of their benefits plus possibly a advanced payment which they don't get back

I think you've been had there OP!

The people who are eligible for Motability are very disabled. Are you jealous of them? Because you sound it.

Disabled people are not some kind of discrete group you either do or do not belong to. Do those people posting attacks on disabled people not realise that they are one accident or illness away from being disabled themselves? My 44 year old sister went to bed fit and healthy. Next morning she was paralysed down one side.
Supporting making life better for disabled people is simply self interest in case I end up disabled myself.

A number of years ago I had a patient who was upset as she was going to lose her Motability car after some sort of reassessment. She had osteoarthritis but mild and I could see no reason why she should get PIP. But it’s not up to me, so I expressed sympathy and filled in the form in a factual manner. With details of her not requiring any aids such as a stick or any prescribed painkillers. She came back to say that she had won her appeal and kept the car.

I hope things have been tightened up for cases like this and it sounds like they have, but hopefully not to the detriment of deserving people.

And doesn't bother to come back to the thread.

As OP put it, something is very, very wrong with this thread. But at least the references to sterilising disabled people have been deleted. One would hope the poster was banned, but I have my doubts.

Edited

You could write a client side plugin for a browser that basically clicks the "show all OP posts" into a buffer and displays the number when you open a thread.

(Even better would be that metric in the forum listing, so you could decide whether to view a thread or not. And yes - I have suggested it).

All dealerships do this now even for second hand cars. I have unfortunately experienced it when buying a small 3 year old car. It’s very embarrassing . It has nothing to do with motorbility.

They do. The award letter has the breakdown of points. The statement of entitlement received with the award letter (and if you have also requested one since) does too.

I'll have a look at the letter and see what it says. I know that it mentioned the mobility issue, but I also know that she scored over 12 points. I just wasn't sure which parts in particular swung it. I wasn't especially concerned about it tbh.

The whole thing was very intense, and hard work, so I didn't think about it anymore. I was just grateful.

I also know that my DB, who also received PIP, does not get the enhanced rate despite his disabilities. He also had to appeal twice. So I don't see how it would be easy to cheat the system.

MellowCoralFinch · 23/10/2026 13:22

I would happily swap my disability and "free" car for being able bodied in a heartbeat.

I'm so fucking sick of the nastiness directed towards the disabled community. And so what if they put a ribbon on it before she collected it? I've never had that happen but don't care if it does or doesn't. Why does that bother anyone?

Some people should remember being disabled is something that can happen to anyone at any time.

Have you ever leased a Motability car?i

I used to work for a garage that provided them. That ok?

roaringdragon · 23/10/2026 13:13

LizzieW1969 · 23/10/2026 13:08

Fair enough. They don't actually state the reason when they agree to the rate. We just got a letter saying she’d been awarded it for the next 3 years, after which we would have to apply again. (She’ll have completed her collegd course by then, so things may have been changed by then.)

Then she didn’t get it for ‘just’ being unable to plan a journey.

JoyousWriter · 23/10/2026 13:05

Jealousy is a terrible thing.

The woman you are envious of in the OP has been lent a house and leased a car.

TheWonderhorse · 23/10/2026 13:01

I have a Motability car for MH reasons. It's costing over £300 per month out of my benefits. I got it at the beginning of the year because my old car was dead. I work, and can't do my job without a car. I can't just get another job because I'm very limited in the jobs I can do. My partner is my carer, we set up our own business to enable me to work.

I might look like I'm driving around in a luxury vehicle, but it isn't mine. I have no assets and never will. I do what I can and despite not being required to work for my universal credit I am keen to and have found something I can manage but it doesn't pay well enough for me to afford to keep fixing the crap cars I can afford. I would be out of work now without the Motability scheme and costing tax payers more.

I don't think I can convey to you how upsetting it is to know that this is as good as it gets for me, and that people resent the pretty basic life I have. I'm intelligent and hardworking and I do what I can, I would love to be able to live differently.

ToWhitToWhoo · 23/10/2026 12:49

Motability cars are not simply given out for free. They are rented through a person's mobility allowance- which they then cannot use for other things. If a the car is too expensive for the mobility allowance to cover it, the person must pay extra.

Nor is the use of a motability car incompatible with someone working. Sometimes it's what enables a disabled person to get and keep a job. PIP/ DLA is not an out-of-work benefit!

I have NEVER heard of someone being given a 4-bedroom house as part of any benefit. Are you sure she didn't inherit it, for example?

And maybe some Americans don't like our Motability car scheme (I actually doubt that most Americans have heard of it!) Many British people don't tike the fact that it's almost impossible to get by withouf a car in most parts of America; that an illness with a need for major medical treatment can cause many people to go bankrupt; and that they've elected Trump a president. Not our business? Our Motability cars aren't their business either!

And I find it most depressing that too many people in our media currently seem obsessed with whipping up hatred against people with disabilities.

Yes, my DD1 definitely scored over 12 points when we completed her assessment. It's a very complex form!

Then she didn’t get it for ‘just’ being unable to plan a journey.

LizzieW1969 · 23/10/2026 12:46

roaringdragon · 23/10/2026 12:28

On its own, being unable to plan a journey is not enough to get the enhanced mobility component of PIP, and therefore be eligible for the motabilty scheme.

Cannot plan the route of a journey scores 8 points, which is what is needed for the standard rate.

You need 12 points for enhanced.

The 12 point criteria on the planning and following a journey criteria is cannot follow the route of a familiar journey without another person, assistance dog or orientation aid.

Yes i keep seeing rubbish on facebook about how the government are going stop DLA/ PIP for Autism and ADHD no mention that its not about diagnosis but how that diagnosis impacts a person.

Excactly. My DD1 gets enhanced PIP, but she was awarded it before she was diagnosed with autism because of the way it impacts on her life.
