Should I complain to Lidl?

givingupimdone · Yesterday 21:47

So I was doing some shopping with dd (4) and when near the fridges the assistant who was shelf staking dropped or knocked off (I didn’t see) this heavy metal bar that goes at the front of the shelves where they put the prices IYKWIM. It really hurt and shocked me - I immediately bent over to put pressure on my foot cos it was stinging, he did apologise and I appreciate he didn’t do it on purpose and I was overwhelmingly glad it didn’t hit dd! But as I’ve taken my rights off now this is the mark it’s left……..
so YABU- just get over it
OR
YANBU - that’s not just a bump, say something

Should I complain to Lidl?

Email and see what they say. You'll will be asked why you didn't report it, but they can check CCTV. They'll offer you a voucher.

OP is definitely looking for a voucher

A bar fell off the shelf. It was an accident.
What are you seeking to gain by complaining?
Are you practicing your compo face ready for the media?

Yes, it was an accident - but it needs to be looked into to see if it was preventable, because it a. hurt the OP and b. it was a 'near miss' for something potentially more serious.

OP says a colleague was loading the fridge and a metal bar fell off - so that points to three possible preventable causes:

  1. That fridge was damaged - could be prevented by checks and maintenance
  2. There's a design fault in the fridges - could be prevented by a modification
  3. The staff member knocked the bar off by loading the fridge in the wrong way - staff need to be trained on how to load the fridges.

History is full of serious incidents that could have been prevented if attention had been paid to less serious incidents that presaged them.

Oh and I didn’t say anything to a manager at the time as a) I was a bit embarrassed cos I thought I’d overreacted and b) dd was getting tired and mardy

for crying out loud...he didnt do it on purpose.....what is unreasonable is mums netters having to look at THAT foot..

I would contact the store manager in writing and copy in head office or customer services and say something along the lines of

"I am not complaining as I accept it was an accident, and the injury to myself is relatively minor, however had it hit my child it could have caused greater injury. I am letting you know that this happened to me so that you can investigate and find out from the staff member how and why it happened and how to avoid it happening again as I am sure you don't want your customers receiving potential serious injuries in your store"

And I would hope that they send me some vouchers (as did Sainsbury's - although I can't now remember what their issue was).

Aye, all about the compo.

mamaof4losingmymind · Today 18:21

Thats a scratch your being ridiculous. You can't train someone not to drop something what do you want the manager to do sit the colleague down and say in the future please don't throw the shelving at customers

Seriously?

Yes 'seriously'

An accident involving a customer should be recorded in The Accident Book, any injury should have been referred to the onsite 1st Aider so the staff member needs further training in the correct response to an instore accident as well as advice on stacking shelves correctly. HSE take a dim view of businesses which downplay/ignore customer injury.

Exactly but let's all just minimise it eh? The lack of risk assessment and safety around customers. Some people are such armchair medical experts they can assess the injury just by looking at a photograph.

It's a scratch 🤦🏽‍♂️ I've had worse from a bramble. This wouldn't even still be registering tbh.

It didn't though.

It was an accident. All a complaint will do is raise a laugh for whoever reads it. What a complete waste of time for everyone involved.

Netcurtainnelly · Today 16:21

WildFatball · Today 07:19

You should get your foot checked and you should email them to let them know what happened. It should be recorded in their accident book and health and safety around this process should be reviewed to ensure it doesn't happen again. Next time it could seriously hurt someone.

This. Accident book.

Blondeshavemorefun · Today 16:13

After seeing the pic. It’s a tiny cut. Yes should’ve have happened and they said sorry - I wouldn’t take it further
