To think the French students are out of control?

Demonstrating against large class sizes is one thing.

Smashing up shop windows and looting goods is another.

Idiots. They are 14/15 and when they are arrested the French authorities will come down on them and their criminal records will stay with them forever. Where are the parents in all of this?

Woukd this happen in the UK?

I find the protests and riots sinister. That they have also happened in Portugal, Italy and Albania too. Brussels even. The students issue may well have been genuine.

Agree..looking the footage being shown on French domestic TV this AM of events last night this has nothing to do with education and class sizes and everything to do with looting and confronting the Government..

Agreed.

Failing multiculturalism before our eyes.

Yesterday they were literally chucking gas bombs into crowds of people peacefully protesting (just walking through the streets with signs, singing and chanting). The ones who are breaking shop windows and setting things on fire are pretty obvious but the police are too busy focusing on stopping the marches. It is genuinely shocking.

I’m listening to a French peaceful protestor who was a recent student speak on the radio. He sounded clear that he wants investment. He said the violence wasn’t good and it means investment ask will be overlooked.

However the violence and looting does look bad. The high end shops being ransacked and fires.

Seventeen isn't a child by any sane metric.

They very much are still children, some more mature tham others of course, and many of the looters are children.

The right to demonstrate is part of our way of life, the fact that the police are focusing more on preventing this than the looting is unheard of here (France).

The prefect of Bouches-du-Rhône, where Marseille is located, says 107 police officers have been injured, three of them "very seriously", following the "looting and violence that the city of Marseille has witnessed" today.

Jacques Witkowski also expresses his thanks to law enforcement and his support for businesses in Marseille.

And let the government get on with destroying their future? No thanks.

You’d rather you destroy it yourselves?

I find the protests and riots sinister. That they have also happened in Portugal, Italy and Albania too. Brussels even. The students issue may well have been genuine. But this level of activity across so many cities is organised. But I doubt by students.
I worry who is responsible and behind it all.
Trying to destabilise one of the significant countries of Europe is not something the EU can ignore.

I feel the same way.

AlicePottery · Today 08:33

Once again, please don't confuse the students legitimately protesting (good) and the arseholes looting and destroying things (awful).

Does this sound legitimate to you?

To think the French students are out of control?

Then the students protesting need to think hard about the arseholes their demos are enabling.

I don’t think it’s quite that binary.

AlicePottery · Today 08:37

(I know I keep going on about it, but the thread title says students and everyone one is in dismay about the destruction being caused by people who couldn't give a flying fuck about the state of the French education system).

What needs to happen is that the police stop focusing on suppressing the demonstration and allow the marches to happen peacefully (which is what usually happens). In Montpellier (one of the nearest cities to where I am) there was a group of musicians playing protest songs with the protesters of all ages and races singing along, it was great, and the police started throwing tear gas into the crowd. At the same time in a street nearby thugs were breaking into a sports shoe shop.
The police are lashing out at kids running away from them or already on the ground.

Obviously showing images of destruction is more clickbaity than everything else going on around.

I disagree.

You think our kids are paragons of good behaviour? At least these French kids care about their education. I'm not excusing looting, but the protests are legitimate. It 'wouldn't happen in the UK' because our kids are too busy on their computer games to give a damn about education.

The gendarmes need to wade in mob-handed and start cracking skulls. Bring back the guillotine if necessary.

AlicePottery · Today 08:46

I am however going to put my phone down for now and go and go some gardening before it starts raining.
