To think the French students are out of control?

Demonstrating against large class sizes is one thing.

Smashing up shop windows and looting goods is another.

Idiots. They are 14/15 and when they are arrested the French authorities will come down on them and their criminal records will stay with them forever. Where are the parents in all of this?

Woukd this happen in the UK?

Just skimmed the thread in the hope that posters realise that there is widespread civil unrest in France but seems the majority want to blame a lot of school children being very silly. When there is an issue, why do so many MN posters seem unable to read up on it and do a bit of google research before posting? This may have begun with protests around underfunded state education, but has gone way beyond that now with many groups protesting about work conditions and quality of life - the French government has lost control with rightwing organisations supporting the police brutality:

"French riot police clashed with uniformed firefighters at protests in Paris on Tuesday, in extraordinary scenes where police used batons and shields against crowds of angry fire officers in helmets. Thousands of firefighters held a demonstration in the French capital, as part of long-running protest movement asking for better pay and conditions, including an increase in their hazard bonus which has not changed since 1990."

You do know there been dozens of riots all over the UK for all kinds of reasons in the last year or so, of courses.

Or perhaps you only listen to the BBC.

Certain demographics here in the UK couldnt wait to loot from stores im sure and to think that this is about students protesting about class sizes is very naive.

As reported in the Guardian, most of the 400 rioters arrested on Saturday were adults who were not part of the high school protests.

Indeed, but where are the links to the dozens of UK riots during the past 12 months?

No, it won't happen here, British youth are pathetic.

You don't actually think its French youth behind all this and of course it can happen in the UK. French students aren't the ones burning down the Limoges city hall because of class sizes.

CosyRoby · Today 00:56

I’ve watched the videos , and it doesn’t look like French students 😳

Sausagenbacon · Today 06:25

I remember a few days ago the BBC calling them children.

I'd guess that the student protests have been infiltrated by other forces intent on creating mayhem. This will either fizzle out or there will be baton charges, tear gas and water cannon, if that hasn't happened already.

If anyone is killed and I hope not, well you can guess what will happen then.

I agree with this it’s now more than just about schools but all grievances, including cost of living. When I see the children demonstrating and laughing though, I don’t think they understand the impact.

OonaStubbs · Today 06:50

IMO the French students are revolting.

Older generations have made sure to set fire to their futures, the students are not the ones responsible for civilisation crashing and burning. Nor are they the ones burning public buildings.

There are student protests happening in many countries at the moment, the majority of which are positive and peaceful.

Didn’t they riot when they tried to raise the state pension age? We really have fucked over the younger generations for the old in many countries.

I’m more concerned that another child lost his hand today because the police is throwing dispersion grenades banned in other European countries, but maybe that’s just me not liking kids being mutilated.

  1. Why was a child on the streets? (Hint: to cause trouble)
  2. What was said child doing trying to pick up a stun grenade? (Hint: to throw it back at police)
  3. Why didn’t the child’s parents keep them at home?

It is not. It is a fundamental right and a legal obligation in the French Republic Public schools all over Europe are having problems, in deprived areas many DC leave without any education.

My parents didn’t attend secondary school in the 60’s they had to work. I left after secondary school because I had to work. Third level education is a privilege. It isn’t an option for everyone.

My nieces and nephews are first generation for us although two siblings returned as adults to education.

My DD is doing her leaving before a science degree. So proud of her.

What are you talking about?

French revolution 1789: state-directed UNIVERSAL education to promote equality.

Universal means everyone.

And the reason you're not seeing British riots, presumably, is because people just aren't that unhappy with the government. Plus, our country is not founded on the principles of revolution.

To the people saying it's not just children now. You're right. It's become a movement that includes lots of people who want change, predominantly around cost of living. However, what every riot in history shows us is that when a government totally refuses to have any form of dialogue with the people, those people will turn around and smash and burn and loot. For example, Swing Riots, 1830 England. Workers being replaced by machines, low wages, punishment of the unemployed, lack of housing.

It's been proven by video evidence that the child was not picking up the grenade, instead it hit them directly from a police throw.

And the remaining questions?

Call me old-fashioned, but my ‘child’ would not be allowed to leave the house to join the rioting, looting and arson.

Boomer55 · Today 07:13

It did happen in the UK. About 2011? A protest started about one issue, and then we had rampaging, looting youths in London and elsewhere.

Just an excuse to steal and vandalise.

Yesterday’s riot/protests in France were mainly older youths and adults. But, the French have always liked protesting and blockading. 🤷‍♀️

chirrupybird · Today 07:16

The ones setting fires and looting are not the genuine protesters they are the usual rent a mob, any excuse is good enough to cause chaos. The daytime protests were relatively peaceful, it was the thugs who come out at night that caused most of the real damage.

WTF? What happened?

butternutsquashed82 · Today 07:18

The ironic thing is, they are protesting because they want a better education and whilst most did in a peaceful way, those that have destroyed property, set fire to buildings etc will be arrested and probably scuppered any chance of a better life!

butternutsquashed82 · Today 07:29

I have zero sympathy for those people who have chosen violence and destruction. These aren’t nice people. To cause so much vandalism and set fire to buildings and loot big stores - you lose your argument!

In the 2011, the riots start because a notorious career criminal, Mark Duggan, had been armed and was shot dead by police. This man was a founder member of a gang, he’d been in and out of prison, was a drug dealer and had five kids by three different women. If he hadn’t died, chances are he would have shot and killed a police officer. So, in response to this the usual suspects took to the streets destroying homes and businesses. My ex was working as a fireman during the riots, he was (and still is) a man of the people and always sees other points of view, but after that day he was shocked at their behaviour! They were attacking fire engines and even the firemen themselves (throwing bricks and attacking them) . And I saw a video last night from a French fireman saying exactly the same thing! These brave men are actually there to protect them and put out the fires they started.

Call me a bitch, but I have zero sympathy for any of them that got involved in this vile, violent behaviour. You want to improve your life, don’t loot shops and set fire to buildings. Guarantee those causing trouble couldn’t give a shit about school.

HelmholtzWatson · Today 07:29

Yeah, I remember when the French protesters thought it was totally fine to burn truckloads of sheep alive as a means of "protest", so this isn't the least bit surprising.
