To think it’s crazy that National Minimum wage is £27k

Yet it’s not really enough to live on 😢

My first job paid £7.5k per year and I thought I was loaded! And I’m not ancient.

Now 2 people on NMW earn over £50k between them yet it’s really not enough these days.

There are people struggling to live while working full time. Youngsters working all hours who can’t afford rent. Working people are struggling to live.

It’s nothing new.

Let's be honest Blossom. It has got much worse.
The number of homeless families is at record highs. An industry has grown in food banks.

The other poster is correct and has been extremely patient with you. Why don't you look at the link that was posted.

@FlyingCatGirl you were lucky as the nineties were the easiest decade. The country was in a big economic boom.

Civil service and NHS still have jobs for life.

That entirely depends on your location. In my area, unemployment went through the roof in the 80s as people were made redundant from the factories, docks and shipyards, and things didn’t begin to pick up until the early 2000s when the last Labour government created jobs here, and there was a lot of EU funded regeneration happening.

I cannot believe your reply to this. Do You know something? Your generation deserve all you get. Me, me, me.

This is a disgraceful thing to say. The previous poster made a more than reasonable comment and you respond with an ageist, spiteful statement like this.

Yes, it’s not a nice thing to have to say is it.

DH and I live off around £50k gross between us and we have a very comfortable lifestyle (we have two children in primary school). It's a perfectly reasonable household income in inexpensive areas (I realise it wouldn't go far in London or much of the south). In my area the problem is lifestyle creep. People's expectations are crazy compared to when we were children. When I was at school most families didn't have one foreign holiday a year, but now a lot of the families I know expect to be able to go away 3-4 times a year. Families often shared one old car - now most people I know have a luxury car per adult, often on PCP. Meals out used to be a rare treat - whereas now a lot of my colleagues feel entitled to coffees, lunches, takeaways and meals out every week.

Do you claim UC though?

Newmumatlast · 10/10/2026 23:20

MyFairLady27 · 09/10/2026 20:19

Well we get by nicely with kids, pets, new cars, holidays,no credit owed to anyone or anything. And get around £20k a year between us as I'm part time atm dh full..Takes good balancing and communication and we do fine and dandy

20k between you? And no UC top up?

Boreded · 10/10/2026 23:30

Newmumatlast · 10/10/2026 23:20

20k between you? And no UC top up?

This one is just what her self employed husband is declaring to HMRC, not how much he actually receives.

Tharealkate · 10/10/2026 23:38

@MyFairLady27 and everyone else who wants us to believe they get by on 20K and other low sums can you please give a monthly breakdown?

20K is about 1400pcm I think.

Many people have at least £900 to pay in rent or mortgage - so that’s at least 2/3 of their salary gone instantly.

Pay your council tax, mobile phone/broadband, energy and water bills, insurance, travel and the rest of that money is gone even before they’ve even got their food or personal items

Again people making these claims are leaving out important information like they live in a house they don’t pay mortgage or rent on. It’s so deliberately misleading.

JaceLancs · 11/10/2026 00:35

I cannot imagine being able to afford to retire
Recently took on a new PT job which I can do till I’m 75, that will hopefully give me enough to live on with state pension and tiny private pension
75+ I will have to downsize or leave the country

SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · 11/10/2026 03:49

Endoadnowarrior · 09/10/2026 20:35

That doesnt add up?
How can your combined wage be 20k if your DH works full time???

Edited

Sounded odd to me as well

Bjorkdidit · 11/10/2026 04:47

Well apparently it was a joke that we should all have got instantly but I still can't see the reference.

To me it looks like someone who is clueless with a DH who's income is 'tax efficient'.

Clearly they're not living comfortably on £20k pa even if they're mortgage free so either the rest of his income is going through a limited company, as could a lot of their personal expenses eg 'company' cars, it could also be the case that poster is employed by the business to do the admin work that backs up his trade.

Or its out and out tax evasion which she'll be colliding with by paying for things like groceries, petrol etc in cash.

Oh for goodness sake! For a start I see you've failed to answer the question of where all these jobs for life are? In my region the industries that offered jobs for life such as steelworks and oil refineries are going bust hand over fist! I get news alerts to my phone everyday of all manner of companies in the UK going bust!

And as for saying anyone younger than you deserves a shit life! That's a disgraceful thing to say and wish for! Older generations did have some things easier! You weren't taxed as hard and as crushed by the cost of living as people are now, you didn't have it as tough trying to get a first home as people do now! I didn't have it as tough as people do now as an 18 year old getting my first mortgage in 1998.
For those families that want kids, a lot are turned off the idea because they can't afford for mum to not have a full time job, your generation never had to juggle that! If you wanted to be a stay at home mother you could afford to!

I couldn’t afford to be a sahm. The most I could afford was job share.

He is a tradesman
He earns £12, 570

So what you mean is hes self employed and on paper earns £12.5k, not even going to ask about benefits.

For the billionth time, this reply was NOT from the poster who said they were living on £20k combined. It was a joke by another poster!

Bjorkdidit · 10/10/2026 10:14

But NMW has more than doubled in the same time period so that matches up.

Doesn't match up at all. TA's for example do not get paid double what they did 14 years ago.

Clydebuilt · 11/10/2026 07:18

PropertyD · 10/10/2026 01:01

Or claims this via HMRC and does a lot of cash in hand. We aren’t daft!!

Well, if you actually RTFT….

sunshinestar1986 · 11/10/2026 06:52

They probably do because it's always been paid at NMW typically, which has doubled in that time period

NMW 2012 was £6.19 ph, now it's £12.71, ie more than double.

HardFuckingBird · 11/10/2026 07:24

Newmumatlast · 10/10/2026 23:18

No. Somebody already asked me this and I replied. We don't get any benefits except for Child Benefit.

randomusername03 · 11/10/2026 07:29

Its called living with your means as best you can. I've been a single parent on £35/week because universal credit decided they'd paid me in advance for 2 years, to a household with £8k monthly income and everything in between. When I was getting basic unemployed single parent (was about £110/week and rent back then) i could pay my basics but there was no fancy clothes, holidays, food, anything. I paid my gas, electric, food, CT, phone and everything was second hand. I didnt smoke and rarely drank. This lasted 6 months as I do like nice things and working a ft job always gave me enough money to have a few nice things. But certainly couldn't have afforded foreign holidays/nice car/copious nights out when I was a working parent nearer the nmw rate which is what I see now in my circles.

Minasama · 09/10/2026 22:17

How?!? Or are you mortgage-free or in council housing?

It’s simply not true. 1 full time wage is more than 20k even on minimum wage and they’ll be receiving a significant benefits top up.

Plenty of people on minimum wage do not revive benefits

No he doesn’t, he takes that as a salary out of his limited company which he’s a director of. Plus dividends, plus whatever personal spending he puts through the business….

People are not stupid.

Exactly what I was going to say! That amount is basically all you have to claim as “paying yourself”
