to think eyebrows don’t NEED to be done

My eyebrows never recovered from the 90s. If I didn't get them done I'd give folks flashbacks, in a bad way.

They don't need to be done. But neither does leather conditioning on a car valet.

Nails don't need to be done either beyond cutting/filing. But people do all sorts to themselves to feel better and that's ok.

Getting my eyebrows done is the one beauty treatment I am for, about quarterly, so not wildly extravagant... they do get a bit shaggy without it, especially the right one. I do trim my fingernails (myself,) but I don't pay for them. More than one eyebrow beauticians suggested doing my 'tache, and I have said no, mainly because I suspect it's a different level of pain than threading/waxing eyebrows, and I am not that masochistic.

I think nails should be kept from getting too ragged, but the rest of it isn't necessary. Most of the beauty industry wouldn't exist if they only did what was entirely necessary, and upwelling is a very normal part of any job involved with selling goods or services.

You don't need to get your nails done, either, you choose to. The woman at the salon was just trying to upsell and make a bit more money.

Noone needs to do anything but as a feel good it's a nice to do. As someone with very pale eyebrows, a lick of tint and a tidy up seems to really change the shape of my face, accentuates my eyes and makes me feel so much better.

I get mine threading every couple of months and it does make a difference. It looks more polished without looking like I’ve actually done anything. I’d never get them microbladed or anything, I like the look of natural brows much more and fashions change too often to want to be stuck with something faddy. I also don’t have any places I frequent enough to trust I wouldn’t end up looking like I’ve had slugs glued to my forehead.

You could argue nails don't need to be 'done' either. Same with hair or make up. Its just nice and some people prefer it.

Nothing NEEDS to be done beyond being clean.

I’ve never had anything done to my eyebrows bar plucking the odd stray hair. Mine are on the sparse side anyway so eyebrow pencil is more needed than tidying.

Well nails don’t need to be done either, but if you’re the sort of person who goes and pays to get their nails ‘done’, is it not reasonable to assume that you might also be interested in getting your brows done? 🤷🏻‍♀️

I’ve never had a manicure or my eyebrows done or anything like that. I put off going to the hairdresser for as long as I can because I hate it. I have a skincare regime and I shave as and when I want to, but that’s my limit. I have had some really snide remarks from other women who do see these things as a priority, so I actually think OP might have a point. I mean, the patriarchal capitalistic system of persuading women that there’s something to fix so they pay to fix it is hardly news, is it? I just can’t be bothered with it all. I’ve got nothing against women who can be bothered, of course. Crack on. I’d just rather be spending my time and money on other stuff.

I was asked if I wanted my entire face waxed. How mortifying!

They don’t need to be done. Of course, lots of people do choose to do various things to their eyebrows and that’s completely up to them isn’t it. I actually think beauticians should be a little bit more sensitive about this kind of subject. Obviously they just want another sale, but by saying do you want me to do XYZ? There’s a slight implication that they think you need those areas sorting out which obviously can make people feel uncomfortable. I think people are adults and if they wanted their eyebrows done along with their nails, then they would’ve booked that in. Just my opinion!

There is an expectation that brows will be neat, curved a certain way with no straggly hairs. Overall this will make your face look better if you are going for a polished look. This is NO different to having your nails done? You are suggesting people read your posts. Please explain the difference between nails being done and eyebrows? Both can be left. Both make you look traditionally ‘better’ if they are done.

I'm approaching 50 and was victim to the 90's obsession with plucked eyebrows, to the point I don't have much outer eyebrow left. Last year I had mine microbladed and I am really pleased with them - they have made such a subtle but significant difference to my face. They are very natural looking. However, it is vitally important that you choose your practitioner wisely. The one who did mine is very experienced, has competed and worked internationally, and refuses to do anything that might look "chavvy" for want of a better word.

This kind of reminds me of our local dentist. We all (friends and neighbours) dread going to him because all he does is try to upsell us on teeth whitening, which he claims is just a normal part of personal care now. I’d go elsewhere but it’s impractical. By the time everything’s been waxed, bleached, whitened, darkened, tweezed, cut, polished, and buffed I can’t begin to imagine what the ‘normal’ woman is spending on all this stuff now. It’s as if the perfect woman is on fantastic wages and simultaneously never at work because she’s at a beauty appointment.

No matter how well we conduct our skin care. those 90s style plucked brows give us away.

I remember my mother saying 'you will regret doing that'.

I now tell my Gen Z and Gen A daughters to pluck wisely.

I really want to do microblading but am scared. It's the face. I'm used to the thinnies..
