What’s the point in the NHS?

I fell over at work today. My ankle was immediately black and blue and swollen, so I hobbled off to urgent care in a taxi.

I waited for four hours, I was x-rayed and told there were no breaks and a severe sprain. The doctor told me I’ve likely torn ligaments in my ankle and will be sore for three months.

I asked what sort of follow up would be given and she all but laughed at me, saying that I could get myself a support on Amazon if I wanted. I said I couldn’t even weight bear and she said I could also pick up crutches if needed. She then said I could refer to physio but “ChatGPT would give me a plan”. I asked if I’d be scanned to find out how badly damaged it is and she said there was no chance.

What is the point? Genuinely, what are we paying for when even things like this are being directed to Amazon and A.I?! I can’t believe it.

I remember 15 years ago my mum tore ligaments in her ankle and she was scanned the same day it happened, put in a boot and on crutches for six weeks, had a course of physio and consultations with an orthopaedic surgeon to discuss a plan if it didn’t improve.

What’s going on?!

Well I did what the doctor told me and asked ChatGPT, which told me that I need a scan, a support and crutches! So it seems the doctor was incorrect in her treatment?

So you think a free online LLM knows better than a doctor?

Speechless.

No I don't actually! I am under nhs consultant for psoriatic arthritis and axial spondyarthris!
And just been referred for surgery on my finger the NHS is an absolute godsend because I would dread to think how much id be paying in insurance if I lived in France or the USA ! Or any country that has to pay NHS is free but it should never be criticised by someone like u for being told U have a torn ligaments and u didn't get what u thought you was entitled to !

So you’re being treated for minor, non life threatening conditions? And want to criticise me for being treated for a non life threatening condition?

How life threatening is your minor finger ailment? You’re wasting resources!

You got a scan, an x-ray scan 😁

Support and crushes are optional, not a requirement to heal, they just help you manage life better. Not what the NHS is for.

So they’d help my health and wellbeing, helping me become healthy sooner.

surely that’s exactly what the national HEALTH service is for?

Well I'd have died in childbirth without it, potentially my child too during childbirth and again during his first asthma attack. My brother who required heart surgery as a baby would certainly be dead. They're just the major events, the antibiotics I got a few weeks ago for a UTI maybe prevented me getting sepsis and dying. The treatment my friend gets for arthritis helps her live a better quality of life rather than be disabled, reliant on others to care for her whilst living in excruciating pain.
Hopefully you get some perspective from this thread and just make that little bit of effort to find some physio exercises. Probably less effort to chatGPT it at home than it is to take a trip to hospital for it.

Out of exasperation at you turning up for emergency care with a twisted ankle, and then rejecting the advice you've been given by a highly-trained doctor.

I got an on the day appt for the Drs, who referred me for a CT scan, which I had within the week. I can’t knock the NHS.

Weirdly just got a text asking me to fill in an NHS survey about positive patient experiences about a minute after posting this.

You're embarrassing yourself now. These illnesses are deliberating for life, not a couple of weeks and will not get better just with time.

What planet are you living on that makes you think the two are comparable?

BipsandCheans · Yesterday 10:05

Your treatment was entirely appropriate. I worked in A&E over 30 years ago and management of sprains was the same then as it is now.
RICE .. Rest Ice Compression Elevate.

Then after a day or two gentle mobilisation. The vast majority heal perfectly well with absolutely no further intervention.

You don't need crutches (thought to slow down healing as weight bearing better) & physio doesn't speed recovery.

Only on Mumsnet can you be told you’re the problem for wanting appropriate care!

You’ve received appropriate care. You’ve been x-rayed and been given advice to rest and allow your ankle to heal. You just want to be molly-coddled.

Passaggressfedup · Yesterday 10:06

Because you were probably acting like a know it all princess and they just wanted to get rid of you.

Have you actually met some of today's doctors? Some of them have a very basic grasp of the English language 🥺

She was told to do that, that must be what the treatment is now. This is what the NHS using AI is.

Passaggressfedup · Yesterday 10:08

No, they won't. You won't recover quicker because of support of crutches. They will just help you, maybe, to get on with your normal life. That falls under social care provision. You might want to make a referral to them. They'll laugh though!

pattercare · Yesterday 10:09

How things have changed they used to hate you using Dr. Google

Pippa12 · Yesterday 10:10

I understand your frustration with months of recovery ahead of you.

My husband dislocated his shoulder two years ago, he did get physio but only 4-6 weeks after the event when he could move it, it would have been futile before, he was in agony. He only had an xray- no scan? He didn’t need one. They assess your sprain clinically, no need for repeated xrays/scans to tell you same information, not to mention further exposure to radiation.

Maybe the referral to physio time scale might work out. I assume they will provide exercises to strengthen the ligaments if it’s a repeated injury. Could you not take the crutches offered or have I misunderstood that bit? He attended a hospital gym afterwards for a month or two. It was a fantastic service.

If you aren’t happy with your consultation, return today and speak to a different clinician. If you’re still not happy utilise PALS. Lots of options.

Not life threatening. That painter derided me for using the NHS for non-life threatening conditions.

One rule for her and another for everyone else I suppose!!!

Here you go, advice from a qualified and very experienced health professional, who is telling you exactly the same as I and others have told you. Are you still going to debate that you have not been treated properly?

Surely if we’re being directed to A.I. for healthcare we shouldn’t be charged so much in tax to pay for a service that’s not fit for use?

My sister in law is a senior nurse, my other sister in law is a senior manager in the NHS, my niece and her partner are doctors, so was my brother in law, my grandmother was a nurse. Both my mum and my dad have received extensive cancer treatment over the last decade or so. My son spent time in hospital when he was little. I've done work for NHS foundation trusts.

I've met a few doctors over my time, yes, and I've not yet met one who doesn't have sufficient English to do their job.

I've also met a few racist tools on the internet.

Franxi · Yesterday 10:11

So one uninterested employee means the whole of the NHS is on its knees?!!

I’ve always had an X-ray in the case of suspected fracture. I’ve had amazing care with an ongoing issue too - MRIs, regular blood tests.

I'm sorry, you called an ambulance for a sprained ankle?

You rang 999 for a sprained ankle?

Flashing blue lights? A sprained ankle?

This is why the NHS is fucked. It's nothing to do with funding, or immigration, or whatever else. Like anything else that's set up for the common good, the main problem is people abusing the system.

I didn't call the ambulance, my colleagues did. I took a tumble down an ancient staircase and we all suspected a broken ankle. 999 sent the ambulance. I was not blue lighted to the hospital. If it wasn't appropriate they would have told my colleagues to arrange alternative transport. 🤷‍♀️

Put less money into the service? that'll make it much better.

And those that can speak English are so obviously pissed off that they’ve been dragged away from their private practices to do their jobs!!
