To not understand why some Argentinians seem to want the Falkland Islands so much?

I really like Argentinian literature and would like to know more about the country- I don't know much at the moment.

However, I have read up on the Falklands War, especially after Milei's grandstanding and the World Cup, and I'm confused as to why there still seems to be a strong sense it was 'stolen' and 'needs to come back', and disregard for the wishes of the Islanders, among some Argentinians (I know many don't feel this way).
The war was terrible and Argentinian men were conscripted. But that was the fault of Galtieri. Argentinians suffered under the brutal junta: we had to defend the Islanders, or they would have suffered under it too. And aside from that, the Islanders don't want to be ruled by Argentina. Virtually no Argentinians live there, and it's not particularly large or rich in natural resources : why the obsession among some? It also seems odd to frame Argentina as a sole victim of colonisation by Britain when the modern country itself was founded upon colonising the indigenous peoples.

I was disgusted with Trump's behaviour : I'm sure he'd scoff at anyone saying that the US is an illegitimate settler state, but he appears to be leaning to Milei for his own ends.

Having visited Argentina recently I have not furthered my understanding of the core issues but I do now have an appreciation for how intensely ordinary Argentine people feel about this. Even young children feel extremely strongly about it, which to me is utterly bizarre. How many teenagers do we have in this country who know anything about it at all?

It's definitely put me off going back, that's for sure.

Parabendum · 25/09/2026 09:02

It’s just another example of people flagellating themselves because Britain is now a big historical baddie but letting others off the hook for the same or worse. It’s pathetic really.

Snoozysnoozy · 25/09/2026 09:00

What frightens me is the historical illiteracy of some people.

I'm not supporting Argentina on this but planting your people in a territory, and then saying, but look, the inhabitants want to stay British, isn't that great an argument. It's exactly the one that's used in NI too.

It isn't.

NI had a native population when the British settlers arrived. Those people had their land taken. The Falklands didn't. The native population of the Falklands, the ones analogous to the Irish, are the British identified people now.

If you want to use NI as an analogy, which you shouldn't, the Argentinians in 1982 were the invaders, akin to British settlement in Ireland. Except they lost.

@DebbieSavage no it omitted that!

What if the Isle of Wight belonged to Brazil? How would we feel about that? I remember when the Falklands' crisis broke, I looked at a map of the UK, expecting to find the Falklands north of the Shetlands.

That would be a better analogy if the Isle of Wight was 300 miles off the coast of Britain.

I think I’m going to take anything you say with a pinch of salt.

Gemini, tell me about DebbieSavage.

Gemini, how dare you! Not even a mention of my gargantuan intellect?

And while we are at it, Britain should hand back Gibraltar, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. There is no excuse in this day and age to cling on to Colonial territory.

’hand back’ hahahhahaha Argentina has NEVER owned the Falkland’s. Thats never as in they have no history of owning them, the only people to live there have been British with a few French. You hand something back to someone who once owned something.
Scotland was given an Indy referendum, Wales didn’t want one. And in a referendum it’s highly likely that even if NI voted to be joined with the Republic the Republic wouldn’t agree to unification.

It would save England a fortune to ‘hand these places back’ unfortunately the people who live there don’t want handing back (at the moment) and you know Democracy.

You mean in the same way the Spanish did in what’s now Argentina?

Which, unlike the Falklands, already had indigenous populations.

Cheeky fucking Argentinians, eh? Just like the Ukrainians wanting Crimea back - imagine the fucking cheek? Or the Spaniards with Gibraltar? Fucking cheek. 😂

The Argentines taking the Falklands would be like Russia taking Crimea.

The state of our country at the minute if they really pushed then they’d probably win the war. We can’t even stop people entering Britain so what chance would we have stopping them from entering Argentina!

Very good point.

I have lived in Argentina. You can't argue with an Argentine that the islands don't belong to them. It's long standing, and a matter of national pride. There doesn't need to be logic. It is what it is.

Bit of a stand off then.

But since the UK built the bigger runway and stationed the RAF on the islands Argentinian control is all academic and just something for banners at football matches and a handy cause for the weird left here.

jksiiuidjuf · 25/09/2026 08:48

I’m sure they’ll get right on that Deb.

DinnerinfrontoftheTV · 25/09/2026 08:47

Argentina is populated by the children of Spanish colonialists.
The Falklands are populated by the children of British pioneers.

What is the difference? The Spanish had to subdue a native population, i.e. exploit and exterminate. The British settled previously unoccupied territory.

The imperialist/coloniser guff coming from Argentina is risible.

Argentina feels entitled to the islands, against the will and the wishes of the islanders, because of geographic proximity. This is nonsense. If this principle were applied everywhere you would get mayhem, and power grabs with no consideration of the inhabitants language, culture or history.
