Is the "Omnicause" real?

TooBigForMyBoots · 24/09/2026 22:56

I've noticed an increase of this term across Mnet recently.

Am I the only one who thinks it's a form of "forced teaming"? A nonsense buzzword used by internet culture warriors to sow division? A bogeyman like the Illuminati in the 2010s?

Or is it a real thing?

The older I get, the more certain I become that I am a "Don't Know"!

Im pretty old, retired, and I don’t think that Israel should round up and kill Palestinians. They can put whatever label they want on it.

As a leftie myself Id say its real.

Some people are lazy thinkers. They dont want to engage with each issue on its own terms and really think about where they stand on it.

Its as if they have a big book titled "What the left believe" and they carry it around with them instead of thinking for themselves.

The same happens on the right as well.

Doesnt have to be that way though. Im gender critical and pro palestine for example, which is increasingly becoming unusual.

I think what makes it different on the left is the institutional aspect. Cause groups on the left seem far more visible on the full range of omnicause views.

There isn’t really an equivalent on right. Eg the prayer book society won’t have a view on deductibility of R&D spend, the Adam Smith Institute doesn’t promote sex-realism, etc etc.

SatinHeart · 25/09/2026 10:27

'Omnicause', 'forced teaming' and 'Illuminati' are all words used by people who spend far too much time down internet scroll holes.

LuckyHazelFox · 25/09/2026 12:17

Yes, unfortunately.

You used it yesterday. I'd never seen it on here before that.

The recent appointment in the Green party - forget his name- brought it back to the forefront with a bang. A man representing women and the proud causes he carries like a badge of honour. Think his appointment has been suspended now.

NancyThompson · 25/09/2026 14:04

I'd say it's real, Greta Thunberg is a good example.

5128gap · 25/09/2026 14:06

I think its just a purjorative term applied to a belief system that favours social justice and challenges the oppression of those percieved to have less power by those percieved to have more. Its the belief system that underlies anti racism, feminism and support for greater wealth/class equality. These are pretty mainstream views and typically just about being a decent fair minded person who doesn't want to see other people suffer.

Perfect - the example, not Greta.

The omnicause is indeed a real thing, but that's what the right wing call it. To people on the left we just call it being on the right side of history. There is only one right answer for every political connondrum that we are faced with. That is the 'omnicause' you speak of.

I’d never heard of this so thank you. And I have a friend who fits beautifully into this description. It’s very wearing and I’m giving her a wider and wider berth. It’s the assumption that they are right, with no discussion that is particularly annoying. Also often not that bright… loud but not that bright.

pondplants · 25/09/2026 14:20

i think this thread is the sign that I need to completely deactivate my Mumsnet account - wtf are people talking about. Everyone here, including me, needs to stop spending so much time online.

what an absolute load of shite about left wing/right wing views

EmptyInTheValley · 25/09/2026 14:26

I am glad to see there is a word for a phenomenon I have often thought about. Hebden Bridge (not far from me) is Omnicause central. Which I am now re-naming Omnitown, in my head.

TicklishReader · 25/09/2026 14:31

Everyone laughs at people who say "woke" now, so they made up this word.

(We are still laughing)

What is the connection between pro-life pro-Palestine and anti-religion people?*

Edited

Coloured hair, septum rings, and chronic anxiety 😉

Edit: ah, misread that as "pro-choice". In which case, ignore me.

OP - I'm not sure what aspect of the omnicause description you're objecting to - could you explain?

It's clearly the case that there's a package of beliefs (free Palestine, trans rights, stop oil, etc) which are shared by a large group of left-wing activists.

It's also the case that within that group of activists, holding dissenting views on one of those topics would result in ostracism (there's an example of this above).

And also that many campaign groups which were formerly single-cause lke Sisters Uncut, Just Stop Oil, or BLM now campaign across multiple apparently unrelated causes, e.g. Free Palestine and trans rights in those three cases.

The term "omnicause" is just a factual description of these recent developments in left wing activism.

It’s all ridiculous.
Thete have been Free Palestine marches supported by 10,000 of ‘activists’. Who knows or cares whether they want to ‘Sop Oil’ and I’m not sure anyone who went on such a march would give a fig about being ostracised by a random trans-rights group.
It’s just a tedious internet conspiracy theory to avoid nuanced discussion.

PeachOctopus · 25/09/2026 14:56

I didn’t believe it was real until I disagreed with trans rights issues and was disavowed by some of my friends.
There is a package job lot of rights that you must agree to on the Left (sometimes contradictory) like and if you deviate from the orthodoxy then you can be sidelined.

Yep but some think it's a laughing matter. It's real alright. Look at Ed Sheeran's case - it's a classic example of how powerful the omnicause lot (think) they are.

I've noticed an increase of this term across Mnet recently.

It's been used on MN for years now.

There is no recent increase in the term. It's just you started noticing it.

I'm GC and I've not been chucked out of 'the left' yet. Still a fully paid up member of the Labour Party, still got all my left leaning friends, many of whom are also GC. I'd say your issue is more an immature friendship group than 'The Left'.

This. I have quite a few GC friends.

It's easy to be respectful.

There does also seem to be a common language/phraseology as well.

I am often irritated by the sheer mass of thought-terminating slogans any communication is comprised of, rather than actual facts and/or coherent argument for the position.

And these slogans themselves move in cycles to - so one "saying" is always most prevalent, then another will take its place. It is embarrassing to witness tbh. I often wonder if there is some secret email supporters get announcing the phrase of the week or something.

This clip exemplifies the Omnicause to me.

This would be the Antifa that doesn't exist as I was told. Sums them up a treat. Nasty bastards.
