Is the "Omnicause" real?

TooBigForMyBoots · 24/09/2026 22:56

I've noticed an increase of this term across Mnet recently.

Am I the only one who thinks it's a form of "forced teaming"? A nonsense buzzword used by internet culture warriors to sow division? A bogeyman like the Illuminati in the 2010s?

Or is it a real thing?

OP posts:
hethor · 24/09/2026 23:14

It's a real thing. There's an evolving assortment of supposedly opressed groups who every right-thinking person must support without examining the actual situation too closely.

TooBigForMyBoots · 24/09/2026 23:15

And if it is a real thing, is there a right wing omnicause too?

OP posts:
DoctorDr · 24/09/2026 23:22

It's real but you've misunderstood it - it's not some conspiracy illuminati thing. Just a concept

Pro Palestine - Pro immigration- Pro Transgenderism Pro-life, anti climate change, anti religion (unless its Islam for some reason) , anti borders etc etc.

Just a bit like boo - hurrah theory. The left seemingly says booo to some things (Israel, Trump etc) and hurrah to others (Pronouns and Mass immigration) without any middle ground or nuance whatsoever.

That's the omnitheory. All the prevalent leftist views are rolled into one and upheld as the ideal constellation that you're cancelled for not subscribing to.

To some extent, but it's more on the fringes whereas on the left the omnicause package is widely adopted by even fairly mainstream activists and politicians.

The rightwing omnicause would include anti-immigration, anti-vaccine, climate change sceptic etc.

I think you need to get off the Internet if you think right wingers are anti vaccine climate-change sceptics. Respectfully that's quite a chronically-online view

As I said, that collection of views is very much on the fringes of right wing politics.

TheSmallAssassin · 24/09/2026 23:30

Neither the left nor the right is one homogeneous blob, people are people.

The omnicause is a collection of beliefs / causes, not a name for a group of people. A significant number of people do adopt all of the beliefs in the package, which is why it's a thing.

For example, Just Stop Oil and Sisters Uncut campaigning about Gaza, despite being formed for entirely different causes. Because those causes are all part of the omnicause package.

She said it included people like that. ETA I see @hethor has already replied. Sorry.

labamba007 · 24/09/2026 23:38

I’ve not actually heard of it before but is it not the same as identity politics?

hethor · 25/09/2026 00:05

Identity politics is the idea that every oppressed group has distinct experiences and therefore requires its own unique activism. In that sense it's not very aligned with the omnicause idea. But there's some crossover, e.g. BLM attracted both identity politics activists and Omnicause activists, which caused considerable friction.

You have listed lots of different things, supported and opposed by people across ages, classes and the political spectrum.

Pro Palestine - Pro immigration- Pro Transgenderism Pro-life, anti climate change, anti religion (unless its Islam for some reason) , anti borders etc etc.

That's not an omnicause or an omnitheory. It's not even a concept. It's a mishmash of buzzwords.Confused

What is the connection between pro-life pro-Palestine and anti-religion people?*

OP posts:
FlorenceLawrence · 25/09/2026 00:22

The Omnicause is very real - it's the Antifa/ very lefty types - all have a unified number of causes they believe strongly in. They will all be pro trans rights, free Palestine, BLM, no borders, refugees welcome, anti-oil, anti-Islamophobia. It's not a conspiracy, but in political groups like Antifa, University SUs etc, anyone who doesn't follow the Omnicauses will risk being ostracised.

A classic example was the American bloke (name escapes me, can't be bothered to look it up) who had strongly advocated for trans rights, who was shouted out of a trans Pride parade because he was Jewish, and wasn't a supporter of Gaza.

There are some weird crossovers though - for eg, there was a contingent of Free Palestine types at the Filia Conference last year, and a stall selling Hijabs/headscarves - very strange considering Filia is very pro-women's rights and spaces, and biological reality, AND you'd think would balk at the Hijab considering the situation for women's rights in Iran/Afghanistan where it is forced on women.

There are always weird crossovers. That's people for you.🤷‍♀️

To take individual weird crossovers and imagine them into a one all encompassing omnicause is nonsense? It's lazy thinking.

I hadn’t actually heard the phrase omnicause until now, but this makes sense, thank you for explaining.

im surprised by pro life though. Surely this group would be pro choice?

or has sentiment really swung that much in recent years?

What sort of thing would you consider to be evidence for or against there being “an omnicause”?

Dadalus · 25/09/2026 06:22

IMO the way it works is that to begin with you have multiple unrelated political issues which have minimal logical overlap, so that we all naturally take a diverse mix & match of views. But the more we become interested and active in discussing politics the more our social nature becomes a factor. Seeking approval from those who share our view on issue A often means moving towards their view on issue B. Similarly if our opponent on issue A is strongly aligned with issue C, we start to see that less favourably. This process as all accelerated by the advent of social media, until we have two main political blocs. So yes you can be pro trans rights and free Palestine and also strongly support new oil drilling, but that would be very difficult socially for most people. It's far easier for most people to either adopt the full package of views OR to keep the messy mix of views but have your politics and social circles separate.

Globules · 25/09/2026 06:23

Never heard of it.

Sounds a bit too much like Ben 10's Omnitrix to me.

CJsGoldfish · 25/09/2026 06:53

No, it’s not a real thing. At least not in the way it has been adopted by the groups that wield it as just another political weapon.
The new and improved “woke” tool 🤷‍♀️

If you take a trip down that rabbit hole, it becomes very clear how a potentially interesting ideology morphed into something completely different

hethor · 25/09/2026 06:58

OP - I'm not sure what aspect of the omnicause description you're objecting to - could you explain?

It's clearly the case that there's a package of beliefs (free Palestine, trans rights, stop oil, etc) which are shared by a large group of left-wing activists.

It's also the case that within that group of activists, holding dissenting views on one of those topics would result in ostracism (there's an example of this above).

And also that many campaign groups which were formerly single-cause lke Sisters Uncut, Just Stop Oil, or BLM now campaign across multiple apparently unrelated causes, e.g. Free Palestine and trans rights in those three cases.

The term "omnicause" is just a factual description of these recent developments in left wing activism.

CorporalJohn · 25/09/2026 08:43

It's the progressive left demonstrating that, at times, their critical thinking skills can be just as shite as those of the far right.

The older I get, the more certain I become that I am a "Don't Know"!

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 25/09/2026 08:52

As a leftie myself Id say its real.

Some people are lazy thinkers. They dont want to engage with each issue on its own terms and really think about where they stand on it.

Its as if they have a big book titled "What the left believe" and they carry it around with them instead of thinking for themselves.

The same happens on the right as well.

Doesnt have to be that way though. Im gender critical and pro palestine for example, which is increasingly becoming unusual.
