Music Magpie poor customer service for missing phone

Does anyone have any experience with this company? My husband ordered a refurbished phone costing over £300. It 'arrived' on Monday and he opened the packaging from Royal mail to find a phone charger but no phone!! The packaging hadn't been tampered with and all seals were intact. We contacted them and received an automated response saying it would take 24 hours to respond. We then had another email saying due to the high amount of emails it would be another 24 hours. We eventually got a reply from an actual person to say they would open a case with their claims department and it would take 2 weeks. We asked for a refund but they said they couldn't do anything until the claims department have investigated. What on earth do we do? My husband has no phone and we are over £300 down. There is no phone number to speak to anyone. We have been so upset about this. It is such a lot of money for us. Surely we deserve better customer service than being told to just wait 2 weeks!

Did the postage label have the weight on it? Sometimes they just buy a label for up to 1kg, sometimes it has the exact weight on it. If it has the exact weight then that could help as it would only be weighted for the charger.

Without that, it’s you fighting them with your word. I don’t know how that goes but you could try going through the resolver website. They are fantastic at helping sort out issues with companies when you’ve got a dispute like this.

Did you pay with a card or through PayPal? Might it be possible to raise a claim via that route…?

Just as an aside, and for possible future reference, I’ve always used BackMarket for refurbished phones and they give really good service.

Hope you manage to get some resolution.

It seems reasonable that they would fully investigate before handing out refunds to anyone claiming something didn’t arrive. Sorry you’ll have to wait for the upgrade in the meantime.

Never heard of Music Magpie. Read the one star reviews on Trustpilot though, they sound shit. Are they in the UK? Report them to trading standards if you don't get a resolution quickly.

FWIW I have had several good experiences buying from Music Magpie but nothing has ever gone wrong with a purchase. What a weird thing to happen.

@Merrybandofpiratesthat is a great idea about the weight. Thank you - I will check that today! I haven't heard of the resolver website either.

Monzo won't let us call back on the money yet I think we have to wait until tomorow.

It is such a weird thing to happen and so frustrating. My husband's phone is broken and won't charge hence why we ordered a new phone. We wanted to do a refurbished phone as it is cheaper but wishing we had just spent extra now.

I am guessing the phone just wasn't put in the packaging to start with. We have photos of what they actually sent.

My brother had a very bad experience with them so I’ve always avoided.

We use CeX for phones and have always had brilliant service. Their 2 year guarantee on tech is better than Apple.

They’re not just going to refund your DH £300 without investigation - as frustrating as that is for you.

FWIW I would only buy a refurbished phone online from somewhere like Amazon or a phone company, not one of those “we buy your old stuff and resell it” places.

Agree. Still said YANBU because they literally had one job. But they will need to investigate first as I can imagine there are people out there who try this on. Especially with phones. Always use back market for phones they're brilliant.

I had a nightmare with them too. Sold my phone - great condition as I always had phone and screen protectors. Wrapped in bubble wrap and then in a box. When they received it it had been smashed. No idea how! They have me £10 and I was originally offered £100. Would never use them.
