To cancel my trip?

I’m off on a uk break to Cornwall in a couple of weeks. I had planned the entire trip around a very long walk on the Sunday (12-15 miles depending on the route I pick!)

Like a great oaf I’ve fallen over and fractured my ankle. Thankfully I’m not on crutches but walking is painful, it’s swelling a lot and just uncomfortable. Unless I have a miraculous recovery in the next two weeks the walk is off.

I don’t really want to spend a long weekend doing nothing in Cornwall. Do I just cut my losses and cancel? I’m going alone so don’t have anyone to talk it through with.

I also do a lot of solo walking holidays. I know I wouldn’t enjoy just sitting around doing nothing if I was meant to be walking.

I guess for me, it would depend on if you’d get a refund or be able to reschedule til the spring? If you’d lose your money anyway, I’d be more inclined to go.

The other issue is can you actually get there? Will you be able to drive or manage the train with luggage with a broken ankle?

Rumbleafteryog · 24/09/2026 19:03

How far do you live from there?
lose any money?

ZippyPeer · 24/09/2026 19:06

If I didn't lose money I would cancel

areyougoodatstayingstill · 24/09/2026 19:11

I can get the money back.

it’s too late to cancel annual leave though so I’ll just be stuck round the house doing nothing 😕 I don’t know whether to go, take a picnic blanket and just sit on the beach all day and read?

I’d go

what else will you do if you don’t go?
unless you say it’s more than 3 hours away

Rumbleafteryog · 24/09/2026 19:13

A fortnight will see a HUGE improvement if you’re already able to walk without crutches!

Rumbleafteryog · 24/09/2026 19:14

You have a broken ankle but no cast and fine to walk without a crutch?

3 hours and a half on the train, so basically three hours. I should be able to get on the train okay as I’ll just be taking a backpack.

My issue is it very much feels like it’s getting worse, not better. So I don’t really see it improving enough to go walking in two weeks!

Is there really no chance you can cancel the leave, might you checked with your boss/HR policy (whichever is likely to be the more reasonable )?

All leave/rotas need to be confirmed 6 weeks in advance so no chance of cancelling unfortunately

If it’s getting worse then maybe get a crutch!!

either way you don’t sound even remotely enthused about it so cancel. In your shoes I know I’d go but that’s me 🤷‍♀️

AlexandraCarrington · 24/09/2026 19:20

I think I'd go if I could manage the journey. You can have a relaxing time reading, enjoying the scenery/sea views, having some nice meals, chatting to people you meet.

If you can't get the annual leave back, it's a better way to spend it than sitting at home.

I don't consider reading on a windy, wet beach in Cornwall all day as a pleasant way to spend my holiday. I'd cancel.

To be honest if it was dry it would be my dream indulgent weekend, but I’m just upset about losing my original plan ☹️

Reschedule your Cornwall booking for the spring, and if you have to still use the leave, either have a cosy few days at home or go on a more modest walk somewhere nearer if you've recovered enough. Maybe get a one night hotel stay in if your budget runs to that.

Rumbleafteryog · 24/09/2026 19:29

I can’t understand why you’re not thinking that a fortnight will bring on big improvement. You aren’t using a crutch now so it really can’t be that bad a broken ankle!

seahorsessky · 24/09/2026 19:30

I'd cancel, and rest/treat your ankle. I used to be an idiot, pushing through stuff, and giving myself serious issues. Staying at home makes you more likely to be sensible, go when you can enjoy it better.

Nofeckingway · 24/09/2026 19:31

If it was for a weekend, you won't be using much leave will you ? I'd get my money back and reschedule. Surely you can find something worthwhile to do between now and the trip date .

CoffeeandCakeBreak · 24/09/2026 19:31

I'm a walker, but if I was I injured I would still go. At least being somewhere away from home, you can switch off from all the normal stuff and rest and relax.

At home, you end up doing chores and it never feels like a break.

Currently in Cornwall now and it's fantastic. There is a beach with a car park next to it. Lots of people drove there and sat and watched the surfers in the glorious sunshine, eating ice cream from the cafe. I obviously walked there. But lots of people with mobility problems, so it is doable and you can have an enjoyable time.

Bellesbest · 24/09/2026 19:55

Are you sure it’s a fracture? Did you go to hospital? Very strange to be walking on it without any support following a fracture

If you are going to sit in the house anyway, than I would much rather sit on a beach in Cornwall. Depending on where you are heading, there may well be other things to do.

TISSHA · 24/09/2026 21:01

If it is only a long weekend, I’d definitely give it a miss. And as you can get the money back, I’d definitely DEFINITELY give it a miss!

It’s a waste to go and not do what you originally planned to do; it will always fall short of expectations. Plus you run the risk of aggravating a recovering ankle, which as a walker myself, is my worst nightmare.

Treat any injury/soreness very seriously - the thought of not being able to walk/being in pain for weeks or causing permanent damage through sheer stubbornness is not the way to go.

Use the leave instead to have a restful few days at home, and truly savour the gift of unexpected extra time. Book a nice lunch out, cook some new recipes, do the garden, start the christmas shopping, go to a gallery/museum, do something you’ve never done before, have a few lie ins, shop for books/clothes/make up/home stuff, see friends, hairdresser…..

I’d much rather have a few days in the comfort of my own home, doing nice productive things than a half hearted holiday in a strange place. Cornwall and the walk will be there in the spring.

frame it like this - whatever you do, you have lost your original plan because you won’t enjoy the walk as much as you want to because of the injury.

so save the money, and redo the Original Plan in the spring, and look forward to that!

Plsfindattached · 25/09/2026 10:30

A doctor scanned you and confirmed a fracture and then what? No bandaging? No crutches? No follow up?

KindlySurfiingPlatypus · 25/09/2026 10:39

I'm shocked you see it as a binary choice between long walking holiday or sitting around doing nothing. There's loads to do in Cornwall without doing a long walk. Art to see, ancient remains, beautiful gardens, the Minack Theatre, dozens of animal sanctuaries, historical sites. I've had at least 10 holidays in Cornwall and the days have been packed with activities most of which would be quite feasible on crutches or with the mobility scooters for hire that are regularly available at such attractions.

You've got the annual leave anyway you might as well explore ways to enjoy yourself with it rather than sitting at home.
