To cancel my trip?

I’m off on a uk break to Cornwall in a couple of weeks. I had planned the entire trip around a very long walk on the Sunday (12-15 miles depending on the route I pick!)

Like a great oaf I’ve fallen over and fractured my ankle. Thankfully I’m not on crutches but walking is painful, it’s swelling a lot and just uncomfortable. Unless I have a miraculous recovery in the next two weeks the walk is off.

I don’t really want to spend a long weekend doing nothing in Cornwall. Do I just cut my losses and cancel? I’m going alone so don’t have anyone to talk it through with.

I'm shocked you see it as a binary choice between long walking holiday or sitting around doing nothing. There's loads to do in Cornwall without doing a long walk. Art to see, ancient remains, beautiful gardens, the Minack Theatre, dozens of animal sanctuaries, historical sites. I've had at least 10 holidays in Cornwall and the days have been packed with activities most of which would be quite feasible on crutches or with the mobility scooters for hire that are regularly available at such attractions.

You've got the annual leave anyway you might as well explore ways to enjoy yourself with it rather than sitting at home.

Me too. Strange. And it’s two weeks away - there will be substantial improvement given already walking on unsupported

Or if you can afford the £274 per week hire charge, you could do the same route as your planned walk in an all-terrain mobility mountain trike from https://offroadmobility.com/mountain-trike-etrike-all-terrain-wheelchair/ based in Cornwall (they will deliver to and collect from your holiday accommodation)

I would stay at home

It's boring but you won't be stressing your ankle with travel, an unfamiliar house, walking to restaurants and cafes.

If you're fine with transport, food and walking to the beach, I would go.

A change is as a good as a rest, but a change and rest is even better!

I’d cancel and spend the time huddled up at home with the TV and books and treat myself to takeaways with the trip refund. Also some nice wine and chocolates 😄
Hope it feels better soon and heals well.

I reckon you don’t want to go @areyougoodatstayingstill even if you hadn’t hurt your ankle.

As it stands… this walk is 2 weeks away, and whilst you say you have a “fracture” - you are walking around on it unaided.

I would cancel. Cornwall with nothing to do in october will be miserable

Find a spa break so you can swim instead

She’s going by train. It’s limited what she can do

With 2 weeks to go, she’s already walking on it entirely unaided.

2 weeks will see a huge improvement!

Hmm I think this would depend how much it cost me and what I could do there/at home the and probably where I was staying.

For example, if I was staying in a lovely Cottage where if the weather was bad, I could light the wood burner and then read my books. That would be completely different from if I had booked a very low-key cottage because I expected to be a house walking pretty much every hour of the day.

And the same for if the money was something where actually if I got it back I could use it to have an amazing time at a different time of year versus if I could still afford to do both and book again when I was more capable of doing my original plan.

And probably the same again for the kind of current state of my house. So if it's that there's loads that needs doing and I'm not going to be in a nice environment at home that would lower my bar for going. Or if my house was in pretty good nick and then actually I can relax and maybe have what I would call a "holiday at home". Take myself out for dinner, go to the library and get some really good books out etc etc, then that would increase the bar for going.
