AIBU to feel set up to fail in a hybrid role?

Firstly, I am already looking for a new job because this place is going to hell in a handbasket.

I recently started a new job – I am experienced in my role and have done it for several years. I was hired on a hybrid basis, 4 days in the office and one at home. All fine, except in the 2 months I have been there I have worked one day at home as the Ops Manager (not my direct manager but a company director so big cheese) keeps finding excuses for why he needs me in the office on my wfh day. In reality he barely speaks to me, doesn’t need me in the office and just doesn’t agree with wfh. He’s like this with everyone who tries to wfh, not just me.

I can live with being in the office. What I can’t live with with is not being able to do my job because I am not allowed on teams meetings because it is “too disruptive”. I manage a tech team of multiple disciplines. I am the only person of my job role in my team, but there are 5 across the organisation, one in each team and we are all experiencing this issue. Only my job role from the tech department are office based, the others are remote workers, therefore my entire team is working remotely and I have no other way to get in touch other than teams and email. The office is large open plan with 3 meeting rooms and no ‘cubbys’ for taking calls. There are a number of different departments in the office – customer care, sales, marketing, operations etc. Their whole teams are office based.

Understandably I cannot take up a meeting room for the entire time I am on calls – I have been told this is not a solution. I am having to do everything via email which is time consuming and quite frankly ridiculous – we do loads of demos and live drawings and discussions, I should literally be spending my day in calls with various different people and I just cant. As a result I am not being effective, my team are complaining they can’t get info and decisions off me and I am just completely out the loop – as a result the team is making mistakes, work is delayed etc. It’s a shit show.

I have spoken with my manager (home based) and he has spoken to his manager (hybrid) my manager is understanding but powerless to change the situation – he is also the other of my roles managers and confirmed they all have the same problem. His manager has said “everyone else is coping, we just need to get on with it” basically inferring we are just trying to wfh so we can slack off. I’ve suggested the 5 of my job role take up one of the meeting rooms all together, like a mini- office for us, and that is not acceptable, I’ve suggested they put us all in a far corner, away from others – also not acceptable. I’ve asked for solutions from them and been told “email” or get people in the office. I am not able to get them in the office, they have wfh, remote contracts and are based country wide (and in other countries).

I just don’t know what to do!

WIBU to just stop doing my job and wait to be fired? They don’t seem to care.

Confused!

Rumbleafteryog · 24/09/2026 15:44

But they won’t be setting you up to fail

They hired you recently. At expense. So no reason for them to all get together and try to fail you.

Still on your probation?

I'm not sure how I can't fail though, given I can't actually do my job.

Yes I am still in probation.

Perhaps come up with a bunch of excuses why you can’t come to the office? Just be firm and say no can do I will be wfh Tuesday as I have back to back teams meetings. Then let them discipline you if that’s the battle they choose?

Confused!

About anything in particular? I am more than happy to provide clarity.

The one day I did work from home I did that. The next time I was supposed to WFH I was told I was needed in the office for a meeting and I needed to rearrange my calls (to when exactly I am not sure!). The meeting never materialised.

Do you have a headset? I’m not sure what their issue with a teams meeting is? That you’ll be talking? Is the rest of the office sat in silence?

LaurieFairyCake · 24/09/2026 15:52

fill your diary with booked meetings with your staff in advance and then refuse to move them. And obviously work from home on that day

Stompythedinosaur · 24/09/2026 15:53

The issue needs to go in a formal email that includes relevant managers. Ask to clarify that they want you not to liaise with your team, even for urgent matters, during your days in the office, even if this causes a business delay.

You should have a standard "as per my job plan, I will be working from home on such and such a day, but I will be available via Teams" response when you're asked to work from the office on your wfh days.

But honestly, their organisation sounds like a shit show!

Yes I have a headset.

Yes, the rest of the office, bar my job role counter parts, are sat in silence, with the exception of big boss and his assistant/ deputy.

have you asked your team what the previous person in your role did?

how long in to your probation are you?

sweetpeaorchestra · 24/09/2026 15:54

That’s insane! Agree with PP about just wfh due to meetings some days, if they won’t accept your other solutions. And possibly start looking for another role as it sounds bonkers

grinandslothit · 24/09/2026 15:55

Are you wearing a headset? People in the open office shouldn't be able to hear your teams calls unless you talk really loud normally

MellowSubmarine · 24/09/2026 15:56

To be clear, they insist you work in the office and then tell you you can’t have calls with your team who are not based in the office?

It would appear so

but we all know - there will be detail missing

Mulledjuice · 24/09/2026 15:59

it sounds v frustrating.

Do you vary your WFH day or is it a set day each week?

Expecting you in the office to sit on email all day is bonkers. expecting you to communicate only via email or chat for 4 days a week (never mind 5) is bonkers.

in what way is Teams calls from the office " too disruptive"?

you need to push back up your line but you need to be able to quantify the business impact of not being able to do calls. put an estimate on it - what is it, a 5-85% reduction in productivity?

DeftGoldHedgehog · 24/09/2026 16:01

Just don't come in on the day you want to work from home and stand firm on it.

SpinandSing · 24/09/2026 16:01

What did they do before Teams/Zoom/Skype became a thing? Can you call them on the phone instead...and then have the screen silent for the demos and still use the phone handset? What does this head honcho say when you speak to him directly? Are your managers afraid of him? I'd be putting this in writing, continuously, if I were you. Keep documenting it.

Even more recently…. What did they do before the OP joined very very recently?

BansheeOfTheSouth · 24/09/2026 16:08

How on earth is your office silent with customer care and sales departments? A silent operations department is also strange. Does your team just provide tech support to colleagues?

The previous person was a remote worker. They left when the role became office based because of how far they lived from the office.

Only a month left. I don't see how I can pass it. Thankfully we aren't dependent on my income!

You won’t pass it
so I’d jump before failing it

Rumbleafteryog · 24/09/2026 16:16

There are a number of different departments in the office – customer care, sales, marketing, operations etc.

So lots of incoming and outgoing calls

Yet you say “silent” office?

I am looking for other roles!

I did WFH on meeting days but was then told WFH needed to be approved, so I then got it approved by my manager and was then told it needed to be approved by big boss, who won't approve it.
