AIBU not to reduce my children’s Christmas presents to match stepchildren’s?

have a blended family. This is the first Christmas we will all be together on Christmas morning. I have 3 children, my DP has 2. Generally we still take control of our own children’s presents at Christmas. As money wise it’s a bit tight if I were to add 2 more children I need to buy for.
I usually spend X amount for each of my children which is what I can afford. That includes stockings and Christmas Eve boxes. This year is also the first year they’ll be here for Christmas Eve. My DP doesn’t usually do boxes so I will get an extra 2 for them so they’re not left out. But for presents he also spends X amount on them each which is around half the amount of what I spend. He can’t really afford to spend more and says I should reduce what I spend on my kids so it’s equal. AIBU if I don’t do that?
I feel that my kids shouldn’t have less than what they’re used to, but also can see that it won’t look great if his kids have less to open. But for me, I have my kids 100% of the time. My DPs kids will go to their mums later in the day and get presents there too, so I feel it’s unfair for my children to get less when generally over all they get less anyway.
Moving in together hasn’t saved us money as obviously we needed a bigger house which costs a lot more to run. 2 of my kids share a bedroom, everyone else has their own room even though his kids are here less than half the time. But I agreed with that as they’re older. But I don’t want my kids to have less of everything to accommodate my step kids all the time when actually their maternal family spoil them so they’re not really missing out. But I know kids probably won’t see it that way. What would you do?
I don’t begrudge my step kids in any way, they’re lovely kids. But I am a sole parent to mine effectively and feel I need to prioritise them. My DP understands this but says to his kids it will look like WE have spent less on them as obviously the kids don’t know that we keep things separate. Previous years they’ve opened presents separately so hasn’t been an issue.

I mean, will they know how much is spent on everyone? I have two dc who are full siblings and live together full time. I don’t think I spend exactly the same amount on them. I don’t think even my teen would know how much things cost. They don’t begrudge each other presents. I wouldn’t make a big show of it though. I’d aim to get them either a similar number or save a few for later when they’re also getting extra presents at their mums. Or as you are already funding Christmas Eve boxes, your partner could save a bit more over the next few months (maybe you skip presents to each other?) and buy a few extra things for his kids too.

Give your kids extra presents to later. How much are you spending g anyway?
we spent a Xmas with In laws and their kids literally had 4/5 x times the presents our kids did. We all sat there and watch as they opened gift after gift and tossed them aside, they had so much stuff they didn’t even open the box or play with the game/toy inside.
It was tedious to watch but our kids were happy with what they had because the trip to see said in-laws overseas was part of their present really.
I swore we’d never give out kids so much stuff that they’d be as ungrateful and spoiled as the cousins were that day.

What’s the point of blending your family if you treat them all differently? Either go all in or don’t bother.

This!

You've missed out all the ages.

Jellybunny98 · 24/09/2026 10:59

How old are the kids involved? If they are all young, as in under 10, I would try to balance out the piles a bit but cheaply which is easier for younger children.

If older I think they’re old enough to understand they have presents at another house waiting for them in a few hours.

Username7258 · 24/09/2026 10:59

Give half when his kids are there and the other half when they get presents from their mum.

Just save some of your kids presents for them to open later when your step kids go to their mums.

Well, yes.

It's actually very simple isn't it..

mtobrokeme · 24/09/2026 10:57

No. I wouldn’t reduce the amount of anything in my child’s life to compensate for someone else’s children. This is one of the many many reasons I wouldn’t even consider blending families!

How old are all of the children, older ones will understand they are getting another lot of presents later that day where little kids are just going to upset.
Either way though, this is his problem to fix. He’s got pleanty of time to start saving.

I agree with all of this, ages are relevant and it's his problem to fix. His kids should get the same as yours but he buys more not you buying less.

PurpleThistle7 · 24/09/2026 10:55

How old are the kids and how would any of them know how much you spent? I wouldn’t see any issue making sure they all had the same number to open in the morning - you can give your kids some more things later in the day when your step kids go to their mum’s if that makes you feel better. But the older they get the presents tend to get fewer and more expensive anyway and I can’t imagine any of them having any idea how much any of it cost.

pinkyredrose · 24/09/2026 10:54

YANBU. Why do your kids share a room though and his get a room each? Your kids live there all the time, seems a bit mad to leave two rooms empty most of the time.

Anyway his kids get 2 Christmases, yours get one. Stick to your guns.

Wiennetta · 24/09/2026 10:53

Give your kids some of their presents in the morning and save some for later when your step-children go to their Mum’s?

Your kids will get the amount they’re used to in total, but in the morning it’ll seem more equal across the kids.

I think it would be better if you lived separately so your DC could have their own rooms and your DP stays over when he doesn’t have his kids.

CatLover113 · 24/09/2026 10:52

If you're going as far as to call yourself a blended family then I think you definitely need to treat them all equally. You don't want to be the cause of any resentment between his children and yours

Presents are physically smaller as they get older anyway.
