AIBU students don’t have bags?

It’s freshers week at universities. Went in a supermarket next to a uni campus to collect a click n collect.
Whilst I was there I checked if my favourite spirits were on offer. One was.
On self scan, loads of students and all buying bags.

Students need to realise that bag charges have been in place for 11 years in England and longer in other parts of UK.

Plus this is going to eat into their budget

in shops with self scans, shops run out as customers scan one bag then take 3-4 or scan none at all.

Obviously works on auto reordering but if a quarter of the bags are scanned

Some countries don’t have bags to buy!

All the shops I shop in you have to ask for a bag at the self-service checkouts.
They scan it before they hand it to you.

I’m sure they’ll figure it out and in many cases a parent will have given them a bag for life which they have forgotten.

I’ve given mine two. I won’t be remotely surprised if he forgets them, but he’ll be annoyed when he has to pay for new bags which should make him remember.

I bet those Freshers' parents wouldn't have been too chuffed if they discovered the family Bag for Life stash had gone off to university with their DC!

They'll build up a collection of bags for life as the term progresses. Yes, they'll probably get caught on the hop now and again and have to buy one, but don't we all - the times you realise you need to pick up a few bits from Sainsbo on the way home and you forgot to put the car's bags for life back in the car the last time you picked up a few bits from Sainsbo on the way home ...

They all get used eventually.

What a bizarre thing to even notice never mind post.

It’s freshers week, most of them have never so much as shopped for themselves and even the most organised of us forget a bag occasionally.

I'm 45 with a huge collection of reusable bags and I still have to buy one from time to time! As long as they were paying for them I don't really see the issue.

Me too. I usually take a bag out with me but sometimes I forget or I buy more than can fit in the bag.
Surely it's not odd for new students to go shopping without bags?

I brought 2 or 3 reusable bags when I was at uni. The cheap ones were free at the time, but the reusable ones were so much nicer to carry.

My DD had bags, and used them to pack stiff for the (third) trip to uni. I know she went to the shops today and unpacked everything to have a bag. But I don’t think she did first year - she probably had to buy one as it wasn’t something we thought of along with everything else.

Students aren't all starving and penniless, if they want to spend 10p or £1 on a bag for life then what on earth is it to do with you. When you're going to leave 35 000 quid in debt, 10p is probably neither here nor there anyway, it's the "stop buying avocado" argument. It's not buying the supermarket carrier bags that are the issue in the grand scheme of student finance.

I usually have bags because I usually do food shopping by car and the bags are in it. But I was pretty hopeless at it when I didn't have a car. And students don't usually have that regular "supermarket every Tuesday" kind of lifestyle. Everything's a lot more spontaneous.

I supplied my DS with a jute Waitrose bag. He gave it back to me during reading week because it was 'too posh'. He'd bought one of those orange jumbo shoppers with the elephant on. There was I thinking it was decent shopper bag without and daft slogans or logos 🤣
